And I would sit in the basement.
I would create.
(keyboard music) I needed to express what I was feeling and what I was seeing in the world.
And I think that the greatest music, that's how it's made.
And I'm trying to turn this into a song.
We'll see.
Songs are like seeds.
You get these beautiful small ideas throughout your waking existence, often right before bed or right as you wake up.
And these dream states.
(upbeat music) Either lyrically might be a rhythm, might be a melody.
They all come differently.
There's some songs that are written that you know, people are going to like, and then there's some that come directly from a really deep, deep place that are really beautiful and powerful.
Those are the ones I want to write.

It's soulful and jazz oriented.

(gentle music) I've had the great fortune of being able to play with just really, really fantastic musicians.
(gentle music) People have taught me so much.
(gentle music) ♪ I said, somebody needs to see.
♪ There was a point with this band that I wanted to be famous, and I wanted to play the biggest stages.
♪ ♪ ♪ There's something going on here.
♪ ♪ ♪ -[Josh] And the more and more that we had opportunities that were opening those doors, the more I was not into it.
♪ a little New Orleans right before you, alright?
♪ ♪ Give it up!
♪ ♪ ♪ -[Josh] It took some time to kind of reimagine the music as a four piece, and it's really turned into something beautiful.
(upbeat music) I just want to create something that means something to someone else.

It's to connect people.
It's to raise the human spirit.
It's to find what it is that we're missing and talk about it.

I would lie to you if I said that it wasn't fun to play big stages.
Playing Europe, They come out in numbers and they come right up to the stage.
I mean, they're just ready to have an experience.

Going from side to side and trying to engage everyone.

You feel that in a small venue, which is wonderful.
But on those big stages, you're attempting to make that same energy happen in an expanse that's way bigger.

(upbeat music) It's kind of a sacred space for me.
(upbeat music) If you go see a singer songwriter and he's telling your stories, if you really dive in and allow that story to wash over you and have a moment, then you can grow from that.
If you're connecting to the song and it's soulful music and you're really feeling what you're saying, it's going to be heavy and it could get you worked up.
That's the kind of performance I want to hear personally.

(upbeat music) Myles Jasnowski is sent from some other plane, I believe, just really in tune with his instrument and very pure as a player.
Mike Keeling, the first time I saw him play, he was a total BA, if you know what I'm saying.
(upbeat music) And I think that as you grow as a human, your art gets better.

And I'm in the right place now.
