ASHLEY REDWOOD: Trap Cardio is a culturally responsive dance fitness program that promotes confidence, leadership and total wellness.
♪ KEYRIS MANZANARES: For these “cousins,” as they call each other, dancing isn't just about the steps.
It's meant to feel like you're at a family reunion with the mission of... ASHLEY REDWOOD: Bringing wellness to every hood.
<< Were going >> << to do knee drives >> ASHLEY REDWOOD: Because just like we have food deserts, we have fitness deserts too, and I just want to make sure I go wherever the people are.
Any neighborhood.
<< Ay!
Ay!
>> KEYRIS MANZANARES: Trap Cardio founder Ashley Redwood has built a dedicated following on social media with over 170,000 subscribers.
ASHLEY REDWOOD: I just want people to know that you can have joy without suffering.
It does not have to be this thing you have to fight, it doesn't have to be this thing you have to earn.
We are all worthy of joy and happiness, and I just hope that everybody out there has the liberty or find the freedom to achieve that.
KEYRIS MANZANARES: Her “come as you are” message is what sets Trap Cardio apart from other fitness classes.
And she's spreading her love of dance all over the country with sold-out pop up classes.
But the regulars in her Richmond-based headquarters say it's the energy... << One jump.
One jump.
>> and the friendships that keep them coming back.
DANNI FOSTER: We can come in here and we feel down for work or just been stressed out, We literally can come in here be with all our friends, as we call them at this point, “cousins,” and we can really just leave it out all on the floor.
Whatevers going on, for an hour and a half we don't have to worry about it at all.
So that's definitely part of that joy just not have — just having a space where we don't have to think about anything, just we get time to have fun and actually build our confidence and also work out KEYRIS MANZANARES: So while the sweat and burnt calories are a plus, the real reward is the joy they take home.
ASHLEY REDWOOD: Joy comes out in the form of dancing, their expression.
It comes out in the form of support.
Like I've seen women cry in here.
Use each other to lean on, you know, lean on to each other.
Joy shows itself in many ways.
