do you get when you combine a student gospel workshop led by Sing Harlem Choir, a gospel competition, and a delectable gospel themed brunch? I'll tell you a three day joyful noise gospel celebration presented by WSRE and the Foo Foo Festival. Now, folks, during this broadcast, we'll take you on a journey. It's going to mass three days, and we'll start with the student Gospel workshop that was held at Dixon School of Arts and Sciences. It's an honor to welcome Jennifer Knisbell, Director of Development and community engagement at WSRE. She's joined by FooFoo Festival chair Therese McKenzie. Next we have Doctor LuSharon Wiley. Joyful noise gospel celebration event chair and Doctor Kevin Kovacs, principal of Dixon School of Arts and Sciences. Welcome to all of you. Thank you. I see the smiles on your faces. You are ready to go. Jennifer, the idea behind Joyful Noise gospel Celebration give us the back story. Well, that is a long story, but I'll give you the short version. I've always been a fan of gospel music. I absolutely love it. I listened to it growing up, and we went to the PBS annual meeting, two summers ago, and they showed us a clip of Henry Louis Gates Jr's upcoming docu series called Gospel and there's a conference room full of a thousand plus people. As we are watching this docu series clip, and the entire audience was standing on their feet. They were cheering, they were clapping, they were dancing. And it was just this most like, I'm already getting chills, bumps, thinking about that motion on your face. Now you had to apply for a grant, is that correct? Yes we do. So we saw that, docu series, clip. We are so inspired by that. And we said we have to do something with this. And we came back home to Pensacola and thought, what are we going to do? And then I was lucky enough to happen upon seeing Harlem, and I thought, how are we going to get them to Pensacola and put it all together? And the only way we could do it is by having the funding. Because that was kind of expensive. So I said Foo Foo festival. This seems to fit in perfectly with the festival and what they're looking for. And so we applied for the grant and for the first time was honored to get a grant and participate. And that love that. Now Tyrese take over here because educate our audience. What is the FooFoo Festival? So the Foo Foo festival is a 12 day celebration, showcasing all of the local arts and entertainment that, Pensacola and Escambia has to offer. This year was our 11th festival, and it's put on every year by a local organization called Ace. It stands for Arts, Culture and Entertainment. And, we are a, volunteer board that receives, funding from the state, the county and the city of Pensacola that we then give out through various grant programs that we have. And then we also, conduct, cultural marketing campaigns. And the Foo Foo festival is, one of our two, marketing campaigns that we do. And it's a little unique because it has this grant component to it as well. So every year we put out a call to the local community to, nonprofit organizations to apply for a grant, and it has to fall within the area of arts, culture and entertainment. So it could be performing arts, visual arts, you name it. You know it. You know it has to fall within the arts scheme during the festival. And, we had over 30 grant applicants this year and they go through a pretty, pretty rigorous, granting process. And we do a public scoring. And we've been very excited this year to have. WSRE PBS For the Gulf Coast, wonderful collaboration between the two of you great friends. I know, Doctor Wiley, as the event chair, you were addressed, someone came to you and said, Will you chair this amazing event? What was your first reaction? Yes, yes, of course it was. What a wonderful thing to bring to, America's first settlement. And this would be the first time, as Jennifer said, that we would have something of this nature to come to Pensacola, Florida. I love the way you say Pensacola, Florida, doctor Kovacs Dixon School of Arts and Sciences. They have seen Harlem come all the way from New York to our area for the student gospel workshop. they just brought the house down. But with approximately 80 students getting to participate in this workshop, it was amazing. We had song upon song of students participating and brought up on stage. Given the microphone, it was out of your seat fun out of your seat fun. I hear you right now, but for our viewing audience, we want to give you a taste of Sing Harlem. Oh, happy day. Music Music My heart is full to all of you, specifically, Jennifer.
Oh. Happy day. This was just the beginning, right? They walked in and the rest was magic. The rest was magic. I can tell you we spent so much time and put so much heart into planning all of this, and I just knew the impact that it was going to make that the second day started singing and those kids started screaming. I broke down in tears and I cried five times during that workshop. Tyrese, just hearing that, the emotion your involvement with FooFoo festival, I just know it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I know it does. For the rest of us right after a while. Yes, yes, we're talking about these little children and Doctor Kovacs. Give us an age range, for example, of anyone who could be a participant. Our students are kindergarten through eighth grade. And our students, all of our students at our school are income based scholarship. So this is not an experience that we can go out and buy. We need to have, sorry, we need to have the FooFoo Festival that provides this type of experience for us because it's all if it inspires the students to change. Perhaps the trajectory of their lives moving forward through high school, into college, into the arts. That's why we do it. All right, Doctor Kovacs, I saw you in the audience there. Do you remember this childhood song? A Tisket a tasket? I know all of you do.
Say yes. Yes, yes. All right, let's get started with the student. Gasps. Small workshop led by a Ahmaya Knoelle Higginson. You're going to love it. Everybody say excuse as I skipped over the front desk, I said. I'm on the way.
I. I talked to the back. Yes.
Oh that's okay.
Yeah. Up a little. Pick it up. I'm pretty. now.
Let's see. Together we have the whole song. So as long as we can all together. Okay, Oh, how sweet it is. Going to task it and put it in her pocket. Going to task it and put it in her pocket. Jennifer, you were melting out there, weren't you? Absolutely.
It was incredible. It just the kids just lit up the second they started singing. And then when they started going through this tisket and tasket it and teaching them how to sing, it was absolutely incredible. Now to Reese, with your involvement, FooFoo Festival. I know you see a lot of events where the children are active and it warms your heart. How does it.
Absolutely. And you know, what's so just beautiful is actually, you know, we look at these ideas, their ideas on a piece of paper, and they present these ideas of the events that they want to do. And actually being there in person and seeing all of these events come together, you know, children, you know, all sorts of, backgrounds and ages. And it's just so beautiful. And it just feels, you know, really, really special to be part of something that's just that much bigger than you are. I love that Doctor Wiley. This little light of mine, one of the most famous gospel songs out there. And I see you smiling. We have a little treat coming up at Doctor Kovacs. There is a little man. Tell us what his name is. What is his name? Connor Cornish.
Connor Coyle. He is six years old, the first grader at Dickson School of Arts and Sciences. And while just one of many talented kids, he is going places in the world. Gets to hear him tonight. And you know what, Doctor Kovacs, you are 100% correct. We are going to listen to this little man and a few other surprises within the confines of this sensational clip. Take a listen. The lyrics. Okay, I'm gonna have to get along I just want to. Okay, okay, okay I know that I la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la. Was.
Oh. I oh wait I, I, I I. I. You.
Oh. I I. I love. Going music And let that light shine brightly.
Right. Guest.
Yeah. Okay. So, doctor Kovacs, Connor Cornish, wasn't he sensational? Absolutely. One thing about him that I noticed. He had no fear.
No. And that is the amazing thing. The arts, music, creativity. It's not just our school, but wherever we can. If we can shine that light on the arts, we're building students to just to be fearless, as you say. Okay, Jennifer, back into your world. We saw at the end you have some serious chops. I would say mad skills, but I'm going to call that serious up singing that was unexpected. That was impromptu, wasn't it? It was completely unexpected. In fact, I had just heard Connor sing and I was so choked up and, mama VI came and grabbed my hand and pulled me to the front. And then Knoelle put the microphone and I was like, I was literally choked up, and I whatever came out, came out. But it was really cool to be included and get to join the kids. And that moment was fantastic. And so for our viewing audience Vy Higginson and Amiya Knoelle Higginson, mother daughter, anything extra about by that you would like to share with our viewing audience? Yes.
Well, we call her mama Vy But she is a legend. They have lived in them, in their family in Harlem for over 150 years. She's a, former radio DJ, and she started this Mama Foundation for the performing Arts and sing Harlem to, elevate gospel music and inspire children through it. And I am inspired. I know that all of you are as well. Thank you so much for joining us, folks. That was only day one, and we have much more to unpack as we head to break. Enjoy this musical treat from the Dixon After hours performing arts program. You'll also see Soulful movement Spirit of Excellence under the direction of Fallon Burlington. We'll be back right after this.
Your. I'm getting it from. You you know, I. You remember me when you you you. And I'll pay you when you sit something down.
You. You you you you see, I, I. I You give me, me. You up, up Oh. Yeah I just love what I do I. Yeah I, I coming You give me, me. You up, up Oh. Yeah I just love what I do I. Yeah I, I coming up I. I hey she's love no grace see. You.

That's what you do. Michael, you can see that. Well, okay, Jennifer, we have a lot to unpack. We had seven performing groups and give us a recap of the prizes. Yeah. So this was a five hour day of nothing but nonstop gospel music. Like you said, seven groups competing for the top three prizes. So what we wanted to do is give the groups some media packages so that they can further their mission or their group or their purpose with that. And so the first place, winner was able to do a in concert or a concert in studio that was filmed for broadcast. It was a 30 minute concert, here at and then of course, second place prize was to be our featured guest right here on Connecting the Community.

Round three. Here we go. All right, let's get to talking. Doctor Wiley. Yes, I must say, you are the busy bee. As the event chair. Really? Starting off with a gospel brunch. We were educated. I love to learn something new every day. We all do. You talked about the history of gospel music. Why don't you elaborate a little bit on that? I'll just say a little bit, because I could wax eloquent on this. But one of the things we just want to be aware of is that gospel grew out of Negro spirituals, and that had so much to do with our history in, America. And then the way that we learned to communicate was through music and sound and beats. And that really hasn't changed a lot today. We still celebrate in those ways. And when we think about our celebrations, when we're in church, think about the sounds the beats and what the messages are. And I was looking at some footage, plenty of people tapping their toes, clapping their hands. And I saw you made me stand up. One of the event members here in beautiful pink and green with the hat to match. You have done quite a bit, not only being a committee member, but also at the University of West Florida. Tell us briefly about your position there. I am, I guess, a person that does a little bit of everything. I'm the director of the Writing lab at UWF, as well as an assistant professor of English. I teach literature class and a couple of grammar classes professional grammar and Modern Linguistics. Awesome. A woman who wears many hats and I enjoyed wearing that hat and. And then for the lady in the bright yellow. Such a ray of sunshine. So why don't you give us a recap? Listen, we heard historical elements. I remember Gino Rosaria, one of the special performers, before we heard from seeing Harlem. But talk about the brunch, the menu, the chef. I just thought it was amazing. So, we hosted the brunch at, Lily Hall, which is the site of the, one of the first black churches of Pensacola, Mount Olive Baptist Church. And it's a beautiful location. They have a beautiful green garden that we actually tented off, and we all sat beneath the tent, put a stage up for Sing Harlem chef Darian Hernandez, created the menu for us. We had some biscuits and gravy and all your wonderful southern favorites for brunch, and we had an hour long performance by Sing Harlem. Now, speaking of Sing Harlem for our viewing audience, we're going to give you a taste of their performances from day two of the gospel competition, culminating with their performance at the Gospel Brunch. You're going to love this. Hum, hum, hum, hum, hum, hum, hum hum hum hum hum hum hum right. Hum hum. Oh, I love hum hum hum hum oh oh, I love, I. Have a song writing, so I hope it's built on nothing that less than Jesus, Lord Jesus and and righteous righteousness. Nothing less than right. But, like righteousness. And I'm sure that you got the she right now, but I will. Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy Lord Jesus, holy me Jesus. They. Oh, come on chior. I'm.
And I just have a great, oh event. Is there any, la la la la la la.
Oh. Well, yes. Thank. Great. All grown up. It's a. Oh, great uprising. go to the rock. I love you, I love you, I love rock. You but I don't. But I love the ground. They say they love. There's one more thing I want to do. I want you to say I'm in love I have to say I'm in love like a baby I'm like a baby, baby. I like to really feel that. Oh la la la la la la. Love that, that, that, that that la la la la la la la la la la la. La la la la la la la la la la land.
Oh. No.
Oh.
Wow. I mean, if the intention is to bring some joy, to bring some hope, to bring some happiness, and to understand the power of gospel music, and to understand the power of the human voice, to understand that this genre of music is an authentic American art form, Getting to see so many people be so generous with their time and their energy, but also getting to be able to not just receive, but also give back to the community, which I've never been into before. what's better than having, you know, friends and family around to sing about joy, to sing about pain, to sing about memories, to sing about heritage. we have gospel. We have, memories through song. And that's exactly what our mission is at the Sing Harlem Choir. And the foundation is to use music as a tool for for spirit and community and love and unity. The joyful noise is and was a musical frequency of hope. And I saw it permeate throughout all of the community here in Pensacola. So thank you, Pensacola. Thank you, joyful noise. You are spectacular.
that la la la I wonder. Let it shine!
! Let it shine!
! Oh, you you. Oh oh my goodness. Oh oh, let me show you. Shine, let it shine, let it shine. oh boy I that la la la mind blowing. Sing Harlem was phenomenal Jennifer for two days. Right. Nice straight that we just saw there. Yes.
There absolutely mind blowing. And everyone just was speechless after that performance. And you have some more highlights, some thoughts that you'd like to share from the gospel brunch.
Yes. I mean everyone is on their feet. They were dancing, they were praising. But there was this overwhelming emotion that people left with. And literally after the brunch was over, multiple people came up to me with just tears streaming down their face. They felt the spirit. They felt the unity and everything about joyful noise. You know, our goal was to unify the community through gospel music. And segment three chills again.
Yes, chills. And then, speaking of children and accomplishments, Doctor Ed Meadows, president of Pensacola State College, also graced the microphone and sang a little bit.
Yes. All right.
He was phenomenal. Doctor Wiley, your thoughts? Well, I know I have to echo what you were saying, Jennifer, because I was surprised and, transported by the amount of emotion that was there, but also who was being emotional. That to me, lets me know that gospel is a universal language. It absolutely is. And may me talk about the unity. You know, what I took away from that is we had church. It was a Sunday afternoon. And that colloquial expression, vernacular expression church up in here, we had a lot of how we did everything. We did everything from total praise to total Prince. Yeah.
And it was echo. Whatever. Everything they said it was emotional. It was cathartic. It was everything you would expect from a church service. And I might have gone there looking for choir robes. There weren't any, but there were choirs and they were singing. They were just phenomenal singers and performers and entertainers. All right.
Ending on that high note. Joyful noise.
Gospel celebration. Now, folks, I'd like to thank all of our guests for joining us. I'm Rameca Vincent Leary, remember to keep it locked in right here on WSRE PBS for the Gulf Coast. Music
