NJ court down to six justices as lawmakers ponder nominees

Chief justice, citing tradition, declined to fill an empty seat

New Jersey’s seven Supreme Court justices must retire at age 70 but the growing number of vacancies on the court threatens to outpace the replacement process. Chief Justice Stuart Rabner just declined to fill another empty seat, opting instead to stay with a six-member panel that he hopes will maintain the court's political balance while lawmakers argue over nominees.
