(soft, dramatic music) The winds of change are brewing as a generation of women are heading out to sea, defying age old taboos about women being bad luck aboard fishing boats.
In 2021, the US Department of Labor ranked their profession the second deadliest behind logging.
Many assume this tough and dangerous profession is a man's job.
With summer here, people readying their boats for the fishing season at Fisherman's Terminal in Seattle clearly illustrate this trend.
Captain Allison Demert says the industry is welcoming to women.
She was born to an Alaskan family that fished salmon for generations expanding her hands on training with the maritime engineering education.
Commercial fishing remains a male dominated trade, but the percentage of women has increased in recent years according to a 2007 report from the Alaskan Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
