Seattle is updating protections for waterfront industrial lands, but a fight over a proposed SoDo Maker's District could upend those plans.
It's been 16 years since the city last made changes to its maritime and industrial zoning.
The delay stems from the conflicting goals of two influential interest groups, but Seattle is now poised to end the rezoning fight.
After a multi-year series of meetings, more than 60 stakeholders reached 85% agreement on a package of policies that would close loopholes to better protect industrial zone lands for actual industrial work while allowing more housing and other uses.
That package of legislation is now working its way through the Seattle City Council, with a final vote expected this summer.
But getting to that final vote will depend on the outcome of a debate over whether to develop housing, hotels, and commercial space in SoDo near the stadiums.
