I think-- I think I'm ready for the ice now, mami.
Ok.
<i>ÁNGEL: [continues reading]</i> [door opens hurriedly] DOÑA INÉS: ¡Don Manuel!
[door closes] ¡Doris!
¡Ay!
MANUEL: ¿Una carta?
DORIS: Pero, doña Inés... Cálmese, por favor.
Cálmese.
Vamos a sentarnos aquí.
- Ay, sí, Doris.
Cuéntenos, ¿qué gran noticia ha recibido?
Ay, Doris... Doris, Julio... Mi Julito llega el viernes.
<i>DORIS: [excitedly] ¡Ay qué bueno!</i> - ¡Felicidades, Inés!
New Year's, Christmas, and Mother's Day all at once?
Wow, what a celebration!
Gracias.
<i>MANUEL: Gracias, linda.</i> Ay, nena...
Never mind, Ángel.
We know that when it comes to food, you like everything, so be serious.
A ver, ¿a quiénes invitamos?
How about Bert and Pito?
We can't have a party without them.
And I think it'd be nice if Bert can meet Julio.
Sure.
<i>Aja, y la de</i> <i>Rafael Hernández también.</i> Sí claro.
<i>[piano riff plays]</i> Le gustaba mucho cantar sus canciones.
Whoever heard of a party without music anyway?
[plays the güiro] [knocking on door] Una fiesta, una party, una fiesta.
[laughs] LUIS: Bienvenido, Julio.
- Qué tal.
Estás en tu casa.
Ey, don Manuel, ¿cómo está?
Te ves bien, muchacho.
- Sí, sí, gracias.
Bueno, y ahora a celebrar.
Se acabaron las lágrimas de tu mamá.
¡Qué alegría tenerte con nosotros!
Hemos estado esperando este momento ansiosamente.
You remember Julio, don‘t you, Ángel?
Dilo, dilo.
- ¿Delia?
Say hello.
Hello.
Perdona.
- No importa.
Oh, no.
I remember you, still.
And I was little then.
[chuckles] Y has crecido mucho, ha.
¿no?
Ah, sí.
[laughs] Allá sí crecí.
- Está más gordo.
No estaba en forma.
[indistinct chatter] <i>Allá hacen</i> <i>mucha habichuela, mucho...</i> <i>...arroz y habichuelas...</i> <i>...patita de cerdo.</i> [whispers] Why are you acting so stiff with him?
Hey, you weren't too extra friendly either.
Shh, they'll hear us?
I don't know what's the matter.
Maybe I'm scared of him.
I think doña Inés noticed.
I'm just nervous.
I've never seen a prisoner before.
He's not a prisoner anymore.
He's an ex-convict.
Okay, then.
I've never seen an ex convict before.
Do you think he'll steal our stuff?
I don't know, but I'm gonna lock my bedroom door.
They're waiting.
We better bring in the stuff.
You better take the tray.
[glasses clink] [knocking] <i>LUIS: Esos deben ser ellos.</i> <i>LUIS: Gracias por </i> <i>coger la puerta, hija.</i> [door opens] <i>LUIS: Mira a nuestro hombre aquí.</i> PITO: Hey!
<i>ALL: [exclaim]</i> ¡Julio!
¡Qué alegría verte... - ...de nuevo por aquí!
- ¿Cómo estás, chico?
- Vaya...
BOTH: [laugh] Déjame presentarte a mi nuevo compañero.
Bert Horne.
It's a real pleasure meeting you.
- Yeah, yeah.
Hey!
Your son está en casa, huh?
Felicidades... Hey, how about that Spanish?
<i>ALL: [laugh]</i> PITO: Okay.
Let's sit down.
Hey, Julio and I got a lot to talk about.
You know, we know each other since we were kids.
[chuckles] Remember, Julio?
When we used to pretend that we were blind.
<i>JULIO: [laughs]</i> ¿Cómo eso que aparentaban ser ciegos?
¿Para qué?
During the summer, we used to go to the park every day, You know?
There were a lot of people there.
[chuckles] Then, we used to get a good spot-- Pito, Pito cogía su bastón...
ALL: [laughing] I had a stick and a tin cup, you know.
[laughs] But remember how we look with those dark glasses?
[laughs] And then I start singing and people start collecting the money.
ALL: [laughs] Sometimes we had by bus, sometimes we have<b> </b>[inaudible] [laughs] but we had a lot of fun, weren't we?
BOTH: [laugh] Yes, yes, we have.
But they found us out.
They found out-- DELIA: How do they found out?
ALL: [laugh] Let me explain this one to you.
They were supposed to be blind.
And here you have Pito.
He starts counting the money.
The money that he's not supposed to see.
[chuckles] Those were the days, man.
Hey, Bert!
You and Pito must have had some good times too, huh?
BERT: Have we?
Well, just last week there was this kid caught in a fire escape.
Oh yeah, the one trying to get his cat.
[laughs] I was climbing up this fire escape, right?
Where this cat was singing to this other cute cat, right?
And one of those buildings in the south end.
Man, those hallways are really rusty.
Anyway, this kid gets his foot caught, right?
And nobody can get him out.
Now, just as soon as I got his foot loose, I slipped.
Pito was right below me.
And he caught me, right.
It was really close.
Pito saved my life because that was the 10th floor.
ALL: [laugh] ¡Wow!
You are a hero!
Yeah, and ever since then, he wants me around just in case he falls again, you know?
[laughs] But oh, mami!
If Pito's a hero, how come he put Julio in jail?
To punish?
Like... When the teacher sends you to the principal's office?
Yes, something like that.
Except you don't have to stay that long.
When did you have to go to the principal office anyway?
A lot of times, for messages and stuff, but not to get punished.
A lot of kids have to go there when they get into trouble.
We had a substitute once.
She said that she would never send us to the principal's office, but instead she would punish the whole class.
That happened to me too, when I was a kid.
It made me mad too, because I was doing my work and some boys were fooling around after school, and it wasn't fair.
Why didn't you tell teacher you were mad?
Are you kidding?
Around here, if we get mad, mami and papi dare to say.
But I wouldn't tell her.
Suerte que Luis y Doris te entienden y te respetan.
Y cuando te enojas, no te castigan.
Nosotros preferimos hablarlo con ellos.
If I punish them for getting mad, they'll only get madder.
<i>BOTH: [chuckle]</i> I did that once when I was little.
I got mad.
I hid in the closet.
Is that what doña Inés is talking about?
You, doña Inés hiding in la closet?
ALL: [laugh] No, no no.
Yo, no.
Julio.
Debajo de la cama.
Under the bed.
ALL: [laugh] Hey, Julio.
You know why I used to hide when I was a kid, and I was mad?
So they wouldn't punish you, no?
No, no.
You see... I was trying to punish them, but I ended up punishing myself.
JULIO: I know.
I know what you mean.
I got awful hungry under that bed.
ALL: [laugh] Who found you under there?
Who else?
[laughs] Ah, sí.
Lo encontré porque estaba roncando.
ALL: [laugh] Hey, I missed that one.
What's... "roncando"?
Snoring?
He was snoring under the bed.
That's why she found him.
I remember now.
I was still mad when mami found me.
You were mad in your sleep.
[chuckles] Anyway... I told my mother that if my father was going to chew me out in front of my friends, I would run away.
Did you run away, Julio?
Is that why you went to prison?
[laughs] No, Ángel.
That happened to me when I was your age.
But we got it all straightened out, no?
And...
And, with that happy ending, would you like some punch?
ALL: [chuckle] Buena idea.
- Bien, bien.
Primero, para doña Inés.
- Eso es jugo puertorriqueño.
Gracias, gracias.
Toma aquí Julio.
- Y a Julio... Por su mutua felicidad.
Felicidad que nos permiten compartir hoy.
Salud.
Bueno... Mire, don Manuel, perdóneme, pero... Yo quisiera olvidarlo.
Para mí, eso fue... como una pesadilla.
Comprendo.
Bert, he says, you know, everything that he just went through, He... Well, he finds it was like a nightmare.
He much rather forget it.
ÁNGEL: But when I have nightmares, I have to talk about them or they won't go away.
Right on, Ángel.
I have to-- I have to talk about my problems to get it out.
No matter what it is that's bugging me.
JULIO: But what do you know?
You're talking about dreams and I'm talking about a living nightmare.
Can you imagine what it's like for a kid, who used to protect his mother to be dropped... All of a sudden, in the middle of a-- cómo se dice... ¿jaula?
en ingl-- ¿jaula?
Cage.
A cage.
In the middle of a cage.
Like an animal?
Yo no podía creerlo.
A veces... Intentaba darme un poco de ánimo cantando.
Pero me mandaban a callar.
<i>El lunes siguiente,</i> <i>me llevaron frente un juez.</i> Y el juez me puso una fianza demasiado de alta.
Y la vieja no pudo... <i>No pudo conseguir los chavos.</i> <i>Así que me devolvieron a la cárcel.</i> A esperar el juicio.
<i>Esperaba los días,</i> <i>las semanas, los meses.</i> 169 días estuve ahí metido.
<i>[whistles]</i> Esperando el juicio.
I was really scared.
Estaba asustado.
La gente... se acercaba al truck, <i> a curiosear...</i> <i>Llegamos allí</i> <i>a la penitenciería,</i> <i>Te juro que</i> <i>cuando llegamos allí,</i> <i>ya yo estaba arrepentido</i> <i>de todo lo que había hecho.</i> <i>Pero...</i> <i>Ya era muy tarde, </i> <i>y no podía hacer nada.</i> <i>Se abrieron las puertas,</i> <i>y era...como si un mundo de </i> <i>tinieblas me estuviera esperando.</i> <i>Se cerraron detrás de mí,</i> <i>I went into a call suite.</i> <i>Yo quería llorar.</i> <i>But you don't cry</i> <i>when you're behind bars, man.</i> <i>Si no, te comen vivo porque...</i> <i>La cárcel es la ley del más fuerte.</i> <i>If they know you're weak,</i> <i>you've had it, man.</i> <i>Este, yo...</i> <i>conocí mucha gente</i> <i>con caras tristes,</i> <i>caras...</i> <i>malhumuradas,</i> <i>sin ninguna esperanza.</i> <i>La gente de afuera...</i> <i>se olvida muy pronto</i> <i>de los que estamos allí adentro.</i> <i>There's a lot of</i> <i>people on the inside</i> <i>that don't have nobody</i> <i>on the outside who cares</i>.
<i>Some of them never,</i> <i>but never got a letter.</i> <i>Cuando las reciben es...</i> <i>es como si recibieran</i> <i>un aliento de vida.</i> <i>Uno cuando está </i> <i>allá dentro lo único...</i> <i>lo único que hace es</i> <i>meditar, pensar...</i> <i>recordar...</i> <i>esperar...</i> <i>esperar y esperar.</i> <i>We wait, we wait, </i> <i>we wait, and wait.</i> <i>[sighs]</i> <i>You hate and hate, and hate.</i> <i>"LINE UP, LINE UP, LINE UP!
"</i> <i>To work, to eat, </i> <i>to drink, to wash up.</i> <i>You are just</i> <i>a number in a line.</i> A bad number.
When I went in, I was a person.
[sniffles] Cuando salí pues... salí un número.
Un número<b> </b>más.
[cries] ¡Basta!
Basta.
<i>PITO: Mira, Julio.</i> Entre nosotros no existe ninguna diferencia.
Solo que tú perdiste a tu padre.
We got along well in school.
He was a good kid.
You told him.
He <i>was</i> good?
He still <i>is</i> good.
Just because he went to prison, that doesn't mean he's bad.
I just-- just made a.. I just made a mistake.
An awful mistake.
Hey, look, Julio.
I never met anybody that doesn't make mistakes.
But I sure met a lot of people that pretend they don't.
Look, we're all human.
Look at me.
Just because I wear badge, that doesn't mean <i>I'm</i> perfect.
Hey, Ángel?
<i>- Hmm?</i> What do you think about all this?
About what?
About Burt?
He's my buddy.
<i>ALL: [chuckle]</i> I think I'm pretty lucky to have friends waiting for me.
Most of the guys that I was with, nadie quiere saber de ellos.
Their families are ashamed of them.
They come out and nobody wants them around.
And even after they pay the debt, they still reject 'em.
DORIS: Bueno, bueno.
Ya basta de tristeza.
Yeah, this is supposed to be a party.
Not-- not a soap opera.
<i>ALL: [laughing]</i> LUIS: A propósito, Julio.
Tú recuerdas que... Te gustaba cantar.
<i>JULIO: Sí.</i> <i>LUIS: Todavía sigues soñando--</i> Me gusta todavía.
<i>--quieres ser un gran cantante.</i> <i>JULIO: Sí.</i> <i>Todavía me gusta mucho.</i> ¿Por qué tú no vas y te traes la guitarra, que está en el cuarto?
DELIA: Come on, Julio!
Sing something for us.
¿Vas a cantar algo?
Ahora nadie me va a mandar a callar.
Gracias, don Manuel.
<i>- De nada.</i> Además, yo siempre...
<i>DELIA: You're going to </i> <i>Puerto Rico to be a singer?</i> - Mm-hmm.
<i>- That sounds neat!</i> I'm free to go to Puerto Rico!
I want to live where I have to-- something to sing about!
My people, my island, my music... My home.
I'm free to go to Puerto Rico.
