(gentle music) It's a difficult time to be an LGBTQ youth in rural America, and the Northwest is no exception.
A nationwide movement to limit discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity among children is growing, such as efforts to ban the graphic memoir, "Gender Queer" in school districts across the country, including those in Kennewick and Walla Walla.
And a recent student election for class president at Ellensburg High School was marred by online harassment and vandalism in response to one candidate being openly gay.
The only LGBTQ centers for youth in central Washington are The Space in Yakima and Helen House in Ellensburg.
Of the 10 to 15 youth who regularly visit The Space, five are currently housing unstable.
A staff case manager offers assistance to those experiencing homelessness, setting them up with social services, mental health counseling and healthcare.
