In recent decades, government agencies have increasingly outsourced social and humanitarian services to the nonprofit sector, and the pandemic resulted in a historic surge in demand for relief programs across the country.
According to a newly released survey from the Nonprofit Association of Washington, some nonprofits are facing high barriers to federal relief.
The survey identified short application windows, late government payments, upfront matching dollars, complicated reporting requirements, and other barriers that disproportionately exclude rural and BIPOC-led organizations from funding.
In contrast, larger nonprofits often have institutional resources for navigating the process.
The survey report concluded, quote, "The current system is inequitable "and results in communities not getting the local, "culturally responsive services they need."
