Black Arts Legacies: Dave Lewis and The Black Tones
Dave Lewis was a talented keyboardist and key player in the Pacific Northwest’s booming rhythm and blues scene of the 1950s and ’60s — a scene that eventually evolved into Seattle’s iconic take on rock ’n’ roll. Zoom forward to the 21st century, and The Black Tones, led by twins Eva and Cedric Walker, are a genre-busting rock band taking Seattle by storm.

Crosscut's Black Arts Legacies project features 26 artists who have made essential contributions to Seattle's cultural landscape.
One of those artists is Dave Lewis.
- [Narrator] I wanted Seattle to know, not to forget Dave Lewis because there's no Dave Lewis anything around here, you know, and that just should not be.
- In the '50s and '60s, Lewis was a talented keyboardist and vocalist in the Pacific Northwest rhythm and blue scene, a scene that eventually morphed into Seattle's iconic take on rock and roll.
Fast forward to the 21st century and the Black Tones, led by twins, Eva and Cedric Walker, are carrying the history of the Northwest sound forward.
In their punk rock take on rhythm and blues, you can hear traces of Dave Lewis and his band's fusion of rock and soul.
