Skamania County has (indistinct) nearly 80% of the land is owned by the federal government.
County Commissioners say they often hear it's a great place to live, but a hard place to make a living.
Soon federal dollars will move in.
The county will receive $4 million under an obscure federal government program called the Local Assistance and Tribal Consistency Fund.
Statewide counties and tribes are set to receive more than $110,000,000 in two annual installments.
Counties like Clark will receive a minimum of $100,000, while only Okanogan County will get the maximum of $12 million.
These funding boosts to rural areas are part of the massive American Rescue Plan Act, the stimulus package shepherded through Congress during the beginning of President Biden's term.
For rural Washington counties that have few people but vast areas of protected forests, the public lands' payments will be substantially larger.
