The Washington Supreme Court have upheld state voting rights after voters in a small southeastern county challenged an election process.
In 2020, the case was brought by three Franklin County voters, along with the League of United Latin American citizens arguing the at-large election process for county commissioners violated the Washington Voting Rights Act.
They said the system prevented them and other Latino voters from selecting the candidate of their choice.
The state and high court affirmed the validity and constitutionality of the voting rights law and also rejected the assertion of a fourth Latino voter who argued the three voters did not have standing in the case because the Washington Voting Rights Act provides protections for minority group and Latinos made up Franklin County's majority population.
The court responded that the law protects all voters from discrimination on the basis of race, color, and language minority in local elections.
