Seattle may soon have its own native neighborhood.
The Chinatown International district and Africa town are just two examples of cultural hubs that celebrate historically oppressed groups.
But Seattle, which is named after Chief Si'ahl the hereditary chief of the Suquamish and Duwamish people has not offered anything similar for its urban native population.
With funding from the city of Seattle the Na'ah Illahee Fund conducted a survey that would help determine what a neighborhood for Seattle's urban native community would consist of, and if the cultural hub is even wanted.
The responses are overwhelmingly in favor.
An anonymous survey respondent wrote, "A lot of us have been displaced from our homelands.
Having a place to be native would help foster community reinforce identity and provide healing for our people."
