Hi, everyone.
Thanks for watching.
Tonight, the nine county Hub and Spoke System, a solid waste management network that features many counties from the viewing area, has faced several challenges over the last few years.
And if something doesn't happen soon at the legislature, the northwest region of Minnesota could become a waste desert.
Our reporter, Matthew Freeman has more details.
Out of a $1.2 billion bonding bill that was passed this legislative session.
$0 went to the nine county hub and spoke system.
On top of that, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency wants to close all unlined landfills in a state which would leave no construction and demolition disposal options for residents of northwest Minnesota.
I think the rule changes have been coming for such a long time that I feel like they've been aroun in the back of everybody's mind maybe since I started here, and that's over 30 years ago without any landfills to put all the debris.
The only option Northwest counties will have is to haul i somewhere with a lined landfill.
We'd probably be looking at trucking it at least 90 to 100 plus miles each way.
And for construction and demolition waste, which is really bulky because it would only compact very well, you a lot of times are shipping a lot of air with that.
It's very costly in transportation and could be the biggest cost factor.
The closest one is Keewatin, general waste facility over in Keewatin.
The next one is I think 172 miles away, somewhere down near the Metro.
We may look at goin over the border in North Dakota, which is preferable to stay i Minnesota with Minnesota waste.
But we have to d what's best for our bottom line.
We rely primarily on the private market for that right now.
So we have three private and D landfills that are unlined right now.
So if they say they don't know they can't afford to install a liner and they just close up shop.
That may put added pressure on because the construction and demolition waste has to go somewhere.
The BCA is anticipating the rule change to close all landfills to be up for approval in late 2026.
I'm Matthew Freeman reporting Lakeland News.
All permits for the northwest region's landfills will expire between 2029 and 2030.
Well for the second time in a month, a person has drowned in Littl Emily Lake in Crow Wing County.
The sheriff's office says 29 year old Cody Kent, of Burnsville, went underwater while swimming in the lake and did not resurface.
Witnesses reported that Kent swam out into the lake befor disappearing beneath the water.
A friend of Kent's was able to locate him underwater, and Kent was subsequently removed from the water.
The drowning was reported jus a little after noon on Saturday near the Little Emily Lake Park swimming area.
On May 12th, 19 year old Cameron Walker of Red Wing died when the boat he was on capsized on Little Emil and he didn't make it to shore.
Well, the Minnesota Department of Transportation has entered year two of its $5 million Highway 10 expansion project in Wadena.
Reporter Miles Walker has more on what motorists can expect over the coming months.
Last year, MnDOT constructed half of the new four lane highway west of Highway 71 while handling reconstruction and improvement for the highway road surfaces, utility sidewalks and turn lanes.
This year, MnDOT has broken down its 2026 construction phase into three areas of impact, one of which being Highway 10, working on both west and east of Highway 71.
We are started a little early this year, maybe three weeks early, which is great for schedule.
The weather has been cooperating.
We are primarily out east of town working on the westbound lanes, a lot of drainage big box culverts being replaced, a couple of the streams we have, we will also be going west of Wadena once again in the eastbound lanes.
And once we get those completed, everything west of town at the end of the season would be complete with a new four lane.
The second piece to the Highway 10 centric work involves Highway 71 south of Highway 10 which will begin in late June.
We always have to concentrate on the end of the year and kind of back things in, and how are we going to hit these dates?
Have a couple small detours that will be used in about a month apiece in order to put in the box culvert.
Otherwise, yeah, it's a lot of activity.
We're meeting with all the businesses.
They're all on board.
It's been really positive for the city of Wadena.
Good partners for sure, and that's making the job much simpler.
And the third construction leg will be on Highway 29 from late June through early September.
South of town, we have the Highway 71 and the Highway 29 portion.
We are going to break those up and we are going to allow the contractor 40 days on Highway 2 and then 35 days on Highway 71.
There's deep soils that hav got to come out that are report.
There's backfilling with clean soils, a lot of infrastructure got replaced.
Sewer water mains for 10, 71 and 29.
Each highway will be open one lane each way, excluding detours.
And from May until June, Highway 10 will be closed between County Road 4 and Harry Rich Drive to excavate deep and replace porous soils and install a culvert at Union Creek.
We have such deep cut would be hard to carry traffic.
Next it would be a lot of additional costs put in sheet piling to hold up a lane while we construct.
We use a lot of additional siding.
We do leave it open to local businesses.
You cannot cut all the way through.
You would end up in the box culvert.
All that information is being, you know, put out there to the public.
So we're aware of that as well.
Contractor is on schedule with that.
It's going really well up to this point.
Reporting in Wadena, Miles Walker Lakeland news.
Highway 10 construction work for 2026 is expected to continue through October.
Democrats and Republicans endorse candidates at state conventions this past weekend.
Here's a look at those who were endorsed in several races at governor, it was Senator Amy Klobuchar on the DFL side and Kendall Qualls on the GOP side.
For U.S.
Senate, the endorsed candidates are Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan and Adam Schwarze.
For secretary of state.
DFL delegates tabbed incumbent Steve Simon, while Republicans endorsed Tad Jude for attorney general.
Democrats went with incumbent Keith Ellison, and Ron Schutz is the GOP endorsed candidate.
It's been 55 years since a Republican has held that office in Minnesota.
And finally, at auditor, DF delegates chose Zach Filipovich, while Republicans gave Nate George the nod.
Iran has suspended talks with the United States in protest of Israel's military action in Lebanon.
That's according to Iranian state media.
This comes after President Donald Trump this weekend sent back changes to a proposed deal to extend an existing cease fire.
All the while, the two countries continue to trade strikes.
Leigh Waldman has the latest.
Iran has suspended talks with the United States in protest over Israel strikes in Lebanon, Semiofficial Iranian state media has reported.
The Iranian foreign minister posting on social media a cease fire between Iran and the United States constitutes, without an ambiguity, a comprehensive cease fire across all fronts, including Lebanon.
Any violation of the cease fire on one front shall be considered a violation of it across all fronts.
I think Israel is very intent on making sure that diplomacy between what the US is not.
The Israeli Prime Ministe instructed the Israeli military to strike a Lebanese subur that is a Hezbollah stronghold.
Those plans were coordinated with the U.S.
and Israeli source told CNN.
U.S.
Central Command said Monday it had successfully intercepte two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting American forces base in Kuwait and conducted what it called self-defense strikes on the Iranian militar infrastructure over the weekend.
They do have their missile capabilities are restored.
They are a threat.
They still have some, air defense capabilities, but there are bigger threat to our allies.
President Donald Trump had sent back changes to proposed deal with Iran, officials said, insisting on tougher languag about Iran's nuclear commitments and its pledge to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and a true social post.
Trump claime Iran really wants to make a deal and it will be a good one for the USA and those that are with us.
I'm Louis Walden reporting.
And tonight, President Donald Trump said on social media that Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to dial back fighting after he talked with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and communicated with the Lebanon militant group through mediators.

A pretty nice weekend overall and not too bad.
Temperatures are a little cooler today than what we have been seeing.
I will have sunshine tomorrow.
Highs will be back in the 80 and then we do have some chances of showers and thunderstorms starting tomorrow night and really continuing through the end of the week.
I'll have your forecast in a few minutes.
And now the weather with Stacy Christiansen.
Well, we did have a few rain shower in parts of the area last night.
Overall today it has been dry.
We've been seeing a mix of clouds and sunshin across the area and temperatures a little bit cooler now as we head into tomorrow.
Sunshine is back, highs are back in the 80s and then we do have a chance of showers and thunderstorms returning to the area starting tomorrow night and Wednesday morning.
Forecast in a second.
Here are our current conditions at 71 degrees in Bemidji.
At the airport.
At our studio, winds are calm with a dew point of 59.
In Brainer we have clear skies 71 degrees.
54 is our dew point and winds are calm.
Looking at the satellite and radar, we have been seeing some clouds in the area today.
We will see a mix of some cloud cover, some clear skies overnight tonight, and then as we head into tomorrow, expect to see plenty of sunshine.
We'll start to see clouds increase late, and we do have a chance of some showers and thunderstorms beginning in western Minnesota tomorrow night and then eventually spreading across the area over the next couple of days.
Well, there's lots to share with you tonight.
Gorgeous skies this morning from Debra at Lake Ada and Ralph in Jenkins.
Angela spotting a couple of bald eagles in the tree in Cass Lake and Josh with a baby bear which climbed the tree on the shores of upper Red Lake.
Arlene sending us this photo of some ducks spotted in her yard in Longville.
And the flowers are in bloom.
We've got rain on the irises from Arlene in Menahga.
Chrissy with some wildflowers in Deerwood and the lady slippers in bloom, Gary in Deerwood, Joan in Laporte and Sonya at Turtle River Lake with those pictures.
So thank you everyone for sharing those tonight for our Eagle Eye reports.
Ralph in Jenkins 61.
This morning.
Arlene in Menahga picked u a half inch of rain last night.
Debra in Pine River 60 this morning and Chrissy in Deerwood with a high of 77.
Arlene in Longville, a mix of clouds and sun.
Stephanie in Brainerd, partly cloudy.
Bob in Bluffton.
6/10 of an inch of rain last night down in the port.
The high was 72 and Angel at Cass Lake, with a high of 76.
On our almanac in Brainerd, we topped out at 79 today, a little bit above our average high temperature for today.
The low was 59.
We had sunrise at 751.
Bemidji today topping out at 77.
So again just a bit above that average high of 71.
53 was our low sun rise was early this morning at before five at 5:00.
Now as we look at our forecast for tomorrow we do start out with some sunshine, a little bit of cloud cover in parts of western Minnesota.
Overall, it looks like we'll be seeing sunshine.
Some clouds start to move in in the afternoon, and then as we head into tomorrow night, we could start to se some showers and thunderstorms.
High temperatures in the area tomorrow should be in the mid 80s across the northern half of our viewing area heading into central Minnesota.
Highs will also be in the mid 80s.
So our forecast tonight.
Variable clouds.
Lows near 51 with east to southeast winds at 5 to 10.
Mostly sunny skies for tomorrow.
Look for highs in the mid 80s.
South winds at 5 to 20.
Looking at our extended forecast, we'll start to see those showers and thunderstorms moving in starting tomorrow night and then mainly in western Minnesota.
Wednesday, eastern Minnesota Thursday.
More chances of some showers and thunderstorms as we head into the weekend.
High temperatures this weekend should be in the 80s.
Could be up to about 88 on Sunday.
Back to you.
Thanks, Stacy.
Charlie's here now with our local sport and some more local golf action.
Yeah, we got a little couple more section, golf going on a little bi this week to start the week off.
8AA, they were over at Bemidji Town and Country Club.
Plus we got to hear from the new head coach for Bemidji Girls Hockey that's coming up after the break.
And now your local sports with Charlie Yeager.
Last week, many area golf teams were finishing up their section tournaments.
But not 8AA.
They were just getting started with their preliminary round narrowing the field to six total teams, plus ten individual for both the boys and the girls.
They held round one of their section championship today at the Bemidji Town and Country Club.
Starting off with the boys at 15, Warroads Mooney Shaugabay with the putt for par, hed card a +5 77, leads the viewing area tied for ninth, just ahead at 16.
Roseau Zaden Lundbaum with a pretty decent approach shot.
He'd followed up wit an even better putt for birdie.
He shot a +6 78, tied for 11th.
Redley Johnson from Warroad also tied for 11th.
Warrior and Rams in the final two spots, though Detroit Lakes at the top of the leaderboard after round one, and rightly so, five of the top si individual golfers were Lakers.
On the girls side of things, we start out with Roseaus Maryn Byfuglien the par three, seventh from just shy of the green.
She finds the bottom of the cup for birdie.
She led all Rams and finished the day in seventh with an 80.
Back at six Natalie Martin, just an eighth grader from Park Rapids.
Tough chip downhill.
That leaves he with a less than ideal par putt.
But she only had four bogeys today and she gets up and down here.
She shot a plus for 76 and is just two shots shy of the Detroit Lakes.
Tatum Gatheridge who leads after round one.
The Lakers are leading as a team for the girls as well.
Roseau, a fairway back sitting firmly in second, and they will play their next round.
Round to the final day tomorrow at Bemidji Town and Country.
Elsewhere in golf in the 6 to 8 championships.
Right now, Saint Cloud Cathedral leading the way there.
Pequot lakes in fourth, followed by Little Falls.
Pillager.
Staples.
Motley in the individual side of things, got a couple of area folks Peyton Carr from Little Falls in second place, Jackson White from Staples-Motley sitting tied for six with Tollef Birkeland from Pequot, and Thomas Johnson, also from staples.
Onto the girls side of things.
Pequot lakes, their grip on the six two championship is loosening.
Albany with a 22 shot lead there.
And on the individual side of things, Imagine Hines from Little Falls, the top area performer today moving on to baseball.
Warroad fall to GF in their elimination game.
Wadena deer Creek falls to holding third in six two appears they are out.
They were a state participant last year, not this year.
Long Prairie Grey Eagle also done for the season.
But Sebeka is not.
They beat Eas Central.
Walker lost to Frazee.
But then Sebeka turned around.
They beat Frazee.
So they are hanging on in 5A.
and Major League Baseball twins get the win.
And in the WNBA, the Lynx are leading the Mercury.
Well, on Friday we announced that Bemidji Girls Hockey had a new head coach.
Chris Hennum was chosen to take over the helm of the reigning section 8AA champs.
And today we had a chance to hear from the man himself about getting the job.
I've really enjoyed coaching my daughters groups, throughout the last half dozen years, and really appreciated the coaching side of it more than I even expected.
And with the excitement in the Bemidji program, it seemed like a great opportunity.
Just really grateful and honored to be selected.
Hennum is retaining all assistant coaches from last season and will lean on them, as well as his coaching experience to keep the Lumberjack culture and tradition alive.
He said his first goal will be getting to know his players and ensuring unity within the group.
Good team are made up of talented players, but great teams are a cohesive bunch that, you know we'll do anything for each other and we'll work hard for the person next to them because that's how you achieve great things is to to be a true team together.
So the level they reached last year set a new bar.
It's a new era of Bemidji girls hockey, and I think it's going to be something to build off of for many, many years to come.
So I'm excited.
And, the expectations are really high.
And, he's they start pract.
I don't know if it's practice or whatever ice time they start that Wednesday.
So hired Friday already o the ice with them on Wednesday.
Get it going.
There you go.
Okay.
Thanks Charlie.
In Nisswa, a local family owned toy store and gift shop recently opened, providing Brainerd Lakes area children with a new locatio to explore their love for toys.
Our reporter Xzayver Curry has the details for this week's In Business.
Duck Duck Turtle.
Located in the heart of Nisswa, right next to the A&W is a family owned business.
Owners Robert Johnson and his son Christopher are natives to the Nisswa area and have built this store around, giving a new an different toy store experience.
The response has been very positive.
People are excited for another toy store in Nisswa, one that is focused solely on toys and puzzles and games.
A lot of people through the doors this first week.
We've been in the Nisswa area for quite a while, and I think we know a little bit about our clientele, both local and in the summertime.
We know they're looking for unique gifts, unique toys that you can't just find at any old store.
We have a lot of things that you don't typically find in other stores.
We open up a new brand called Project Genius, which is these new brainteasers and puzzles and stuff you typically wouldn't find in other places.
We have sun shirts.
They kind of glow with a new color when they're in the sun.
You also have scribble tees.
They come with a set of markers that you can draw on them with, and fun stuff like that.
Duck, duck, turtle was a vision that Christopher had for a long time, and now with the store finally open, he can put to use the experience he gathered from working for his father.
Since he was a little kid.
Christopher and I've worked together since he was 2, 1 years ago.
He would color in a little table and greet customers, and now he's purchased this stuff, bringing a lot of his interest into the store.
Now he's learning the behind the scene how to put things in inventory, the day to day operations of the store.
And it's pretty seamless.
He's he's doing really well with it.
Chris and Bo are not new to working together, but their business relationship has grown from dad and son to employer and employee to now co-owners.
It's fun.
I like the family connection.
It's exciting.
It's the best I know him.
I know how he runs and he knows how I run, so it' actually easier to communicate and try and figure things out.
And we can always tease here and there and joke around, and it's as lighthearted as it can be.
Reporting in Nisswa for this week's In Business Xzayver Curry, Lakeland News.
Duck, duck turtle also opened a gift shop right next door that sells older antiques and souvenirs.
Let's go back to Stacy for more on weather.
We'll see.
Variable clouds overnight tonight.
Low temperatures near 51 East to southeast.
Winds at 5 to 10.
Sunny skies tomorrow.
Highs will be back in the mid 80s.
Went south at 5 to 15.
Then we have showers and thunderstorms returning to the area starting around midweek.
A little bit unsettled as we head into the weekend.
Okay, we'll have a great night everybody.
We're back at ten tomorrow.
I hope you can join us on Good Night tonight.
