Just Walk Away

Pigeonholing art into a 9 to 5 schedule doesn't always work.
Sometimes even the right music and the perfect morning walk doesn't result in a creative flow for the day. When it's just not working, Willis "Bing" Davis will walk away and try something else. Maybe it's sketching out a future piece or watching an ant crawl.

- Sometimes when I'm working, no matter what the material, I've walked away.
And sometimes I walk away rather than mess it up.
And I say, "It may not be flowing right now," or I may not have gotten myself prepared to work.
And so it'll be better to just stop and maybe do something else.
And that's when I might do the cleanup, sweep the studio or sharpen a pencil or lay things out, and just to get some activity going and then come back to the work.
But also sometimes, when the flow is not there and it's not quite working, I will just sort of look rather than physically work.
And a lot of times when I'm working on something, someone walking by me think, "Boy, he's just wasting time.
"He's just sitting there looking."
And what I'm doing is I'm taking it's going over the entire piece with my eyes in a slow motion and looking at every aspect of it and just letting it come in and see if it's feeling right.
Does it feel like it's going in the right direction?
Or you know, I'll go back like you rewind a film and you go back to the beginning and look at it and walk towards it.
You find and you explore a variety of ways that will work for you or work for the person that you're working to help overcome a creative block or to get into what we call that flow.
