SHE WROTE THE NEW DEAL: A 75TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION .
THIS HAS WONDERFUL PHOTOGRAPHS AND WONDERFUL POSTERS, THIS IS A GREAT BOOK AND SHE IS GOING TO TELL US WHY WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE NEW DEAL.
PUBLIC ART AND ARCHITECTURE IN NEW MEXICO FROM 1933 TO 1943 , A BEAUTIFUL BOOK.
SO, AND YOU ARE ALSO A SANTA FE LIVING TREASURE AMONG OTHER THINGS.
>>KATHY: YES AND IT MIGHT HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE.
>>LORENE: YOU HAVE MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE FOR WPA ART IN THE STATE, THEY CALL YOU THE QUEEN OF THE NEW DEAL.
WILL YOU TELL OUR AUDIENCE WHAT IS THE NEW DEAL, WHY IS IT A BIG DEAL, WHAT DOES WPA STAND FOR AND WHEN DID ALL THIS HAPPEN AND WHY MUST WE PRESERVE THIS ART?
>>KATHY: I WOULD LOVE TO TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THAT AND MUCH MORE, BUT WE DON'T HAVE THAT MUCH TIME.
THE NEW DEAL FOLLOWED THE STOCK MARKET CRASH IN THIS COUNTRY AND OUR COUNTRY WAS IN A TOTAL GREAT DEPRESSION ERA IN THE 30S.
THE LANDS WERE BLOWING AWAY, EVERYTHING WAS AWFUL.
AND ALONG COMES FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT AND HE GOT ELECTED AND TOOK OFFICE ON MARCH 3 OF 1933 AND HAD A MOUNTAIN OF THINGS THAT HE HAD TO TAKE CARE OF IMMEDIATELY.
SO, THE FIRST TEN DAYS HE PUT IN 10 DIFFERENT BILLS TO TRY TO GET THIS COUNTRY BACK FUNCTIONING AGAIN AND SURVIVING.
THE FIRST THING HE DID WAS CLOSE THE BANKS AND GET THINGS WORKED OUT SO THAT EVERYBODY COULD SURVIVE AND THEN HE STARTED CREATING ALL KINDS OF JOBS WITH ANY KIND OF DIRECTION OF ANYTHING, JUST SO THAT HE COULD GET PEOPLE TO WORK.
WELL, WHAT THEY DID, THOSE JOBS ENDED UP BEING PUBLIC WORKS PROJECTS.
SO, TODAY, WE STILL HAVE A LOT OF THOSE TREASURES THAT CAME OUT OF THAT AND WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT SOME OF THEM TODAY.
THE FIRST PROGRAM THAT HE STARTED WAS THE CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS AND THAT WAS TO PUT YOUNG BOYS, THAT WERE 18 TO 25, TO WORK, BECAUSE HE SAID, YOU KNOW OUR LAND IS BLOWING AWAY AND WE GOT TO PLANT SOME TREES TO HOLD THIS LAND DOWN.
HE SAID, YOU KNOW I AM A TREE FARMER, MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THAT.
SO THAT WAS HIS DEAL TO TAKE YOUNG BOYS THAT WERE NEEDING TO HAVE SOMETHING TO DO AND PUT THEM TO WORK AND THEY PLANTED SOME BILLIONS OF TREES ALL OVER THIS COUNTRY AND ALL OF THE PARKS IN OUR NATION AND CERTAINLY THE ONES IN NEW MEXICO, THEY WORKED HARD AT.
IF YOU GO UP TO BANDELIER AND THEN YOU HAVE GOT TO DOWN TO GET DOWN THERE, THOSE CCC BOYS DUG THAT ROAD OUT WITH SHOVELS BECAUSE THEY HAD NO BIG EQUIPMENT TO DO.
AND THEN ONCE THEY GOT DOWN THERE, THEY BUILT THE BUILDINGS AND THEY BUILT THE LANES AND EVERYTHING, THE TRAILS.
SO, THERE WERE 42,000 BOYS IN NEW MEXICO THAT WORKED ON THAT AND THEY JUST DID SO MUCH AT ALL OF THE CAMPS AND AT ALL THE CAVERNS AT WHITE SANDS, CARLSBAD, BANDELIER, CORONADO OVER IN BERNALILLO.
AND THEN THEY HAVE BEEN HONORED OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS BY PUTTING UP A BRONZE CCC WORKERS STATUE, WHICH WE HAVE ONE HERE ON THE CAMPUS AT THE CAPITOL GROUNDS, IT IS RIGHT ON THE PASEO DEL PERALTA CORNER AND IT IS ONE OF THREE IN NEW MEXICO.
THE OTHERS ARE IN BANDELIER AND AT ELEPHANT BUTTE DAM AND NOW THE MUSEUM DOWN IN T AND C IS ALSO THINKING ABOUT PUTTING ONE UP.
THERE ARE 72 OF THEM ACROSS THE NATION, SO IT IS A WONDERFUL WAY TO THANK THE GUYS FOR AND YOU KNOW, YOU WERE THERE WHEN WE WERE INVOLVED IN PUTTING OURS UP.
THEN THERE IS ANOTHER PROGRAM THAT PEOPLE KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT AND THESE ARE JUST TWO OF THE PROGRAMS THAT ARE KIND OF KNOWN TO SOME PEOPLE BECAUSE MAYBE GRANDPA WAS IN ONE OF THOSE PROGRAMS OR GRANDMA WORKED IN ONE OF THEM.
SO THERE ARE SO MANY OTHERS, I AM JUST ADDRESSING THESE TODAY.
BUT THE WPA WAS THE WORKS PROGRESS ADMINISTRATION.
IT STARTED IN 1935 AND IT LATER BECAME THE WORKS PROJECTS ADMINISTRATION BUT ANYWAY, IT IS ALL THE SAME.
AND THAT WAS A PROGRAM TO PUT PEOPLE TO WORK JUST DOING ANY KIND OF LABOR JOB - BUILDING HIGHWAYS, BUILDING ROADS, BUILDING SCHOOLS, BUILDING ANYTHING JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY COULD GET PEOPLE BACK TO WORK AND MAKING SOME MONEY TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FAMILIES.
THERE WERE 45 DIFFERENT KINDS OF PROJECTS TOTAL, BUT THEY EVEN BUILT SOME TOWNS AND 61 TOWNS WERE BUILT ACROSS THIS NATION AND GUESS WHAT?
>>LORENE: WHAT?
>>KATHY: WE HAVE ONE STILL ALIVE IN NEW MEXICO.
>>LORENE: WHAT IS IT?
>>KATHY: BOSQUE FARMS, RIGHT DOWN BELOW ALBUQUERQUE.
SO, A NEW DEAL TOWN IS STILL WITH US TODAY.
THEN WE HAVE THE ART PROJECT THAT WAS PART OF THE NEW DEAL AND IT IS PART OF THE WPA PROJECTS.
THERE WERE OTHER PROJECTS, THERE WAS A MUSIC PROJECT, THERE WAS A WRITER'S PROJECT, THAT WE ALL HAD HERE IN NEW MEXICO.
THERE WAS ANOTHER ONE THAT WAS THE THEATER PROJECT, WE DIDN'T HAVE THE THEATER PROJECT IN NEW MEXICO, BUT WE DID HAVE THE OTHERS.
SO LET'S GO FOR THE ART PROJECT FIRST BECAUSE THAT IS ONE THAT WE WERE REALLY INTERESTED IN TODAY.
>>LORENE: WELL, I JUST THINK WHEN PEOPLE SEE, IN A WAY A LOT OF THEM ARE VERY FAMILIAR BUT THE STYLE AND HOW PHENOMENAL THEY WERE AND HOW EVOCATIVE OF THAT ERA, WHAT A LEGACY, WHAT A TREASURE IT IS.
>>KATHY: ABSOLUTELY.
>>LORENE: WE ARE GOING TO SHOW OUR AUDIENCE SEVEN PAINTINGS.
>>KATHY: YES, OKAY.
WE HAD 167 ARTISTS PUT TO WORK IN NEW MEXICO, 37 WERE FEMALES, 28 WERE HISPANICS, AND ALSO 28 WERE NATIVE AMERICANS AND ONE AFRICAN AMERICAN AND WE ARE GOING TO SHOW ONE OF HIS PIECES.
THEN WE HAVE MANY, MANY PHOTOGRAPHS OF ALL THESE THINGS AND WHERE THEY ARE.
I HAVE A BOOK THAT WILL TELL YOU WHERE TO GO, I ALSO HAVE A SET OF MAPS, YOU CAN ORDER THESE AND THEY ARE NORTHERN, CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO AND THEY ARE AVAILABLE AND WILL TAKE YOU ALL OVER THE STATE.
>>LORENE: AND I THINK, THIS FALL AS PEOPLE ARE THINKING ABOUT WINTER AND NOT BEING ABLE TO GO ANYWHERE, PEOPLE WANT TO GO ON SOME ADVENTURES AROUND THE STATE.
THESE MAPS WILL SHOW YOU WHERE ALL OF THESE BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF ART ARE, IT IS A GREAT EXPEDITION.
>>KATHY: YES, ABSOLUTELY.
AND THERE IS ONLY 667 PAINTINGS TO LOOK FOR AND 65 MURALS, PARTICULARLY IN POST OFFICES AND COURTHOUSES.
AND YOU KNOW WHAT THE BEST POST OFFICE MURAL, WHERE IT IS, IT WAS CHOSEN BY THE FEDS TO BE THE BEST IN NEW MEXICO, EVERY STATE WAS CHOSEN THE BEST.
OURS IS IN TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES AND AS YOU START IN DOWNTOWN TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, HERE IS THIS WHITE POST OFFICE, GO IN THERE AND LOOK AT THAT MURAL.
IT IS NOT LIKE ANYTHING ELSE YOU HAVE EVER SEEN.
IT IS REALLY BEAUTIFUL AND THE BEST, OKAY?
AND THEN THERE WERE SCULPTURES THAT WERE DONE, WE KNOW OF 10 SCULPTURES AND WE ARE GOING TO SHOW YOU ONE OF THOSE TODAY.
AND THERE WERE SILKSCREENS AND STRIATE ARTWORK.
MANY TIN WORK PIECES AND THEN, OF COURSE, FURNITURE.
THERE WAS JUST, EVERYBODY WAS PUT TO USE THEIR SKILLS AND THEIR CREATIVE THINGS.
THERE ARE SOME OF THEM IN THIS BUILDING HERE AT THE STATE CAPITOL, IN THE PASSAGEWAY BETWEEN THE OTHER BUILDING AND THIS ONE, THERE IS A VERY LARGE MURAL THAT WAS ORIGINALLY IN THE VETERANS FACILITY AND I TALKED THEM INTO LETTING US PUT IT IN THE CAPITAL BUILDING.
IT IS NOW HERE.
SO, I WOULD JUST SAY THAT THE MUSIC PROJECT MOVING FROM ART TO MUSIC.
THE FEDERAL DIRECTOR OF THE FEDERAL WPA MUSIC PROJECT WAS A SYMPHONY CONDUCTOR AND HE WANTED EVERY STATE TO HAVE A SYMPHONY.
WELL, WE ALL KNOW THAT SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO, IS A VERY CULTURED PLACE AND WE HAD PROOF.
WE ALREADY HAD A WONDERFUL SYMPHONY IN NEW MEXICO IN ALBUQUERQUE, SO THE DIRECTOR OF THE STATE MUSIC PROJECT FIGURED OUT WHAT TO DO AND SHE WAS AWARE THAT SPANISH AMERICAN MUSICIANS REALLY KNEW ALL THIS MUSIC BY HEARING IT BUT NOT SEEING IT IN MUSICAL FORM.
SO, THEY NEEDED WORK, SO SHE HIRED A BUNCH OF THEM TO PLAY THE MUSIC AND WHILE THEY WERE PLAYING, SHE HIRED A BUNCH MORE TO STAND NEXT TO THEM AND WRITE DOWN THE SONG THAT THEY WERE PLAYING.
AND THIS BOOK, MADE IN THE 30S, AND THEN THIS PARTICULAR EDITION THAT WE HAVE DONE IS PART OF OUR ACTIVITIES AT THE NEW MEXICO CHAPTER IS THE REPRODUCTION OF THAT BOOK.

>>LORENE: YEAH, YEAH, MAYBE WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO PUT THEM ON THAT SIDE A LITTLE BIT, HOLD THEM UP OVER THERE IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA.

THIS WAS DONE, IT WAS HIS MEMORY OF HIS MOTHER NURSING HIM THROUGH MALARIA AS A LITTLE BOY.
AND IT WAS IN THE CARRIE TINGLEY OUTPATIENT CLINIC FOR MANY YEARS AND IT WAS ALL CAST, IT WAS NOT BRONZE, IT HAD NO BRONZE ON IT.
AND THE KIDS WOULD CLIMB UP AND GRAB HOLD OF MOTHER'S HAND AND ONE DAY, DR. LAGRONE CAME TO SEE ME AND SAID, "I DON'T KNOW IF YOU KNOW WHO I AM," AND HE INTRODUCED HIMSELF.
AND I SAID, "HEY, WE NEED ANOTHER OLIVER LAGRONE THUMB BECAUSE ONE OF THEM HAS BEEN TAKEN OFF OF MOTHER'S HAND."
SO I TOOK HIM TO THE CAST ROOM AND HE DID ANOTHER THUMB AND IT IS NOW BRONZED AND IT IS ACTUALLY IN THE INPATIENT CLINIC INPATIENT UNIT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO HOSPITAL ACROSS WHERE THE HOSPITAL IS.

THE TURTLES ARE SO WONDERFUL, I MEAN I JUST LOVE THIS FOUNTAIN AND YOU ARE MAKING EFFORTS TO TRY TO RESTORE IT?
>>KATHY: YES, WE HAVE RECEIVED SO FAR ABOUT $108,000, BUT WE NEED $220,000 SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
SO WE ARE HAPPY TO TAKE ANY DONATIONS THAT PEOPLE WANT AND THAT FACILITY IS NOW, IT WAS ORIGINALLY THE POLIO HOSPITAL AND IT WAS CALLED CARRIE TINGLEY HOSPITAL.
CARRIE WAS OUR FIRST LADY AND CLYDE AND FRANKLIN WERE GOOD BUDDIES.
BUT I GOT A STORY TO LET YOU KNOW THAT CARRIE AND ELEANOR WERE GOOD BUDDIES, BECAUSE AT ONE POINT OR OTHER WHEN THEY WERE WANTING TO BUILD THAT FACILITY AND THE LEGISLATURE DESIGNATED AN ARCHITECTURAL FIRM HERE IN SANTA FE TO DO THE JOB TO DESIGN WHAT THAT HOSPITAL WAS GOING TO LOOK LIKE.
SO, TWO WEEKS LATER, CARRIE WENT TO THE ARCHITECTURAL FIRM AND SAID, "I WANT TO KNOW HOW MY POLIO MYELITIS HOSPITAL IS COMING ALONG?"
AND ONE OF THOSE ARCHITECTS, THEY ALL KIND OF LOOKED DOWN AT THE FLOOR AND FINALLY ONE OF THEM SAID, "MRS. TINGLEY, IF THE TRUTH WERE KNOWN, WE DON'T KNOW WHAT A POLIO MYELITIS HOSPITAL HAS TO HAVE IN IT."
SHE SAID, "THAT'S NOT A PROBLEM, WHERE IS YOUR PHONE?"
AND SO THEY TOOK HER INTO ANOTHER ROOM AND SHE DIALED A NUMBER AND THIS WOMAN ANSWERED AND SAID, "HI, CARRIE, IT IS SO GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU."
AND SHE SAID, "THANK YOU, ELEANOR, I HAVE GOT SOMETHING I NEED YOUR HELP ON."

I'LL JUST GET THE PLANS FROM THE WARM SPRINGS, GEORGIA HOSPITAL WHERE FRANKLIN GETS TREATED FOR HIS POLIO."
TWO WEEKS LATER THE ARCHITECT CAME AND GAVE THE PLANS TO THE NEW MEXICO ARCHITECT.

WELL, I JUST WANT TO COME BACK TO YOUR SAVING THE TURTLE SCULPTURE OF THE FOUNTAIN, BECAUSE YOU HAVE SOME REALLY WONDERFUL FUND RAISING THINGS.
WOULD YOU JUST TAKE A MINUTE AND SHOW US YOUR LICENSE PLATE LINE.
SO NEW MEXICO IS A STATE WHERE YOU CAN HAVE AN ATTRACTIVE WORK OF ART AS YOUR FRONT LICENSE PLATE, ALL OF THESE ARE, LOOK AT HOW BEAUTIFUL THEY ARE AND YOU CAN DONATE TO THE NEW DEAL PRESERVATION.

THE FIRST THING WE DID WAS TRY TO FIND ALL THE ARTWORK THAT WAS IN THE STATE.
THIS WAS THE NEW MEXICO CHAPTER AND THEN I DID GET TO INTERVIEW SOME THAT WERE STILL ALIVE.
THEN WE HAVE A TRAVELING PHOTO EXHIBIT THAT THESE ALL ARE PART OF.
>>LORENE: YEAH, YEAH.
>>KATHY: AND WE HAVE A LARGE COLLECTION OF THESE FRAMED PHOTOGRAPHS, PLUS THE BLACK AND WHITES THAT WERE DONE BY THE FOREIGN SECURITY ADMINISTRATION, PHOTOGRAPHS THAT WERE TAKEN IN NEW MEXICO AND OTHER PLACES.
AND THAT TRAVELING PHOTO EXHIBIT WE HAVE AVAILABLE, WE HAVE DONE IT ALL OVER THE STATE IN LOTS OF DIFFERENT PLACES AND THERE ARE STILL MORE PLACES TO DO.
AND WE JUST FINISHED ONE AT CORRALES, THERE IS ONE COMING UP IN LAS VEGAS AND IT IS A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO BRING THE COMMUNITIES TOGETHER AND SEE WHAT THEY HAVE AND TALK ABOUT AND HAVE THEM COME UP WITH THEIR STORIES, THAT THEY REMEMBER THEIR GRANDPA OR GRANDMA TOLD THEM ABOUT.
BECAUSE A LOT OF WOMEN GOT PUT TO WORK DOING SEWING, THERE WAS ONE BIG SEWING GROUP THAT CREATED BEDDING FOR THE CHILDREN AT THE HOSPITAL BEDS AT CARRIE TINGLEY HOSPITAL AND THE GOWNS AND STUFF FOR THE KIDS TO WEAR.
AND THERE WERE FOOD KITCHENS AND ALL THIS KIND OF STUFF THAT THE WOMEN WERE INVOLVED IN TOO.
WE HAVE SPENT SO FAR $600,000 EITHER PRESERVING OR RESTORING OR CONSERVING THE PUBLIC ART THAT WE HAVE FOUND THAT ARE IN NEED.
THOSE THAT ARE RESTORED ARE THE BIGGIES BECAUSE WE HAD SIX OVER AT HIGHLANDS THAT HAD FIVE COATS OF WHITE PAINT ON TOP OF THEM AND IT WAS A MIRACLE THAT WE HAD SOMEBODY WHO COULD TAKE CARE OF IT AND THEN THERE WAS ONE DOWN AT NEW MEXICO STATE WE ALSO HAD SOME DIFFICULTY WITH.
BUT WE DID THE RESTORATION, WE USED PROFESSIONAL PEOPLE IN ALL THEIR FIELDS TO DO WHAT WE HAVE TO DO, SO WE HAVE CONSERVED 147 ART PIECES SO FAR AND THERE ARE MORE TO DO.
>>LORENE: WELL HOW DOES NEW MEXICO STAND COMPARED TO OTHER STATES, HOW MUCH WPA ART, RESTORED OR NOT, DO WE HAVE COMPARED TO SAY OUR NEIGHBORING STATES.
>>KATHY: OH, WE HAVE FAR MORE THAN SAY ARIZONA, BUT THERE IS ONE PERSON THAT IS PRETTY ACTIVE THERE THAT HAS GOTTEN THINGS GOING BUT THEY DON'T HAVE ANYTHING AS MUCH AS WE DO.
TEXAS HAS A GOODLY AMOUNT, BUT YOU KNOW, I MAY BE PREJUDICED, BUT WE HAVE GOT THE BEST.
AND CERTAINLY OUR NATIONAL BOARD THAT I WORK WITH ALSO, ARE ALL THRILLED WHEN THEY GET TO COME TO SANTA FE OR IF I SEND THEM A PICTURE OF SOMETHING AND THEY GO, "OH MY GOD."
BUT THEY ARE ALL WORKING ON PROJECTS IN THEIR STATES TOO.
AND OUR CURRENT PRESIDENT IS IN BERKELEY AND BERKELEY, ONE OF OUR BOARD MEMBERS WAS A GEOGRAPHY PROFESSOR THERE, AND YEARS AGO HE DECIDED HE WOULD PUT HIS GEOGRAPHY STUDENTS TOGETHER MAKING MAPS OF EVERYTHING ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND HE RECENTLY CAME OUT WITH A MAP OF WASHINGTON, DC OF EVERYTHING THAT IS THERE.
AND LEGISLATORS WERE BLOWN AWAY, THEY HAD NO IDEA THERE WAS THAT MUCH IN WASHINGTON, DC, BUT THERE IS AND IT IS ALL OVER.
>>LORENE: CAN YOU TELL ME WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO SEE THIS ART AND TO PRESERVE IT AND THEN I WANT YOU TO TELL ME, YOU WERE A WRITER AND YOU HAVE HAD A RADIO SHOW, YOU HAD A COLUMN, WORKED IN THE SECRETARY OF STATE'S OFFICE FOREVER.

SO, HOW DID THIS BECOME A CHAPTER IN YOUR LIFE'S WORK BECAUSE YOU REALLY ARE THE QUEEN OF NEW DEAL ART IN NEW MEXICO.

>>LORENE: HE IS MY HERO, THE BEST NEW MEXICAN THAT EVER LIVED.

>>KATHY: AS THE DEPUTY SECRETARY OF STATE, THE SECRETARY SAID TO ME THE FIRST DAY ON THE JOB, "YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPILING AND EDITING THE NEW MEXICO BLUE BOOK."
AND I WENT, "WHAT'S THAT?"
AND THEN I REMEMBERED THAT MY HUSBAND HAD A WHOLE RACK OF THOSE BLUE BOOKS.
>>LORENE: I HAVE THE SAME RACK.
>>KATHY: LIKE YOUR HUSBAND.
SO I REALIZED THAT I WAS IN FOR A VERY BIG JOB.
AND YOU DID IT EVERY TWO YEARS, SO THERE ARE ALL DIFFERENT CHAPTERS, ALL DIFFERENT SECTIONS AND I TRIED TO FEATURE DIFFERENT THINGS IN EACH SECTION OR EACH YEAR.
ONE OF THEM I FEATURED PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND THAT WAS EARLY ON AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I WENT, MY GOD WE HAVE ALL THESE PUBLIC BUILDINGS IN THE STATE.
MY GOODNESS, COURTHOUSES, POST OFFICES, CITY HALLS, SCHOOLS.
I MEAN, YOU NAME IT.
I WONDER IF THEY ARE LIKE THIS IN OTHER STATES?
SO I ASKED THE SECRETARY, I SAID, "CAN I CALL SOME OTHER STATES AND ASK THE SECRETARIES OF STATES AND SEE IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO COME AND LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS AND SEE WHAT THESE TREASURES ARE?"
SURE ENOUGH WE GOT THEM TO COME, ABOUT 25 PEOPLE CAME AND WE SPENT A WEEKEND COMPARING NOTES ABOUT ALL WE HAD AND THEY SAID.
"HEY, THIS IS TOO VALUABLE, WE CAN'T LET THESE THINGS EVER BE DESTROYED."
AND SO WE CREATED THIS PRIVATE NONPROFIT 501C(3) AND THE MAN WHO WAS THE GROUP FACILITATOR FOR THAT WEEKEND, THEY SAID, "AND YOU ARE GOING TO BE THE PRESIDENT."
AND THEY SAID, "AND KATHY, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ON MONDAY MORNING AFTER YOUR RETIRE?"
I SAID, "I AM GOING TO RETIRE."
AND THEY SAID, "NO, YOU ARE NOT.
YOU ARE GOING TO BE THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR."
