Welcome to Songwriters Under the Covers" with me, Victoria Shaw.

I'm your bus driver for the night.

I'm so happy to be here.

We are filming this time at The Listening Room in Nashville, Tennessee, which is one of my favorite places to play and so glad we could be here tonight.

[ Cheers and applause ] And for those of you that have never seen the show, where have you been?

We're in season two.

I want to tell you just how it works.

It's where I invite my very successful hit songwriter friends to come and play with me.

We go round the round, we show off each other's songs, and then we go home.

It's a really easy concept and it's a lot of fun.

And I have some of the best songwriters in the business here tonight and there are also some of my very dear friends.

So this is really extra fun for me.

To my left, I could talk about this man for hours and hours, but I don't have the time.

He is such a diverse songwriter and has such an interesting history.

He started out in the pop music field.

He had a top 40 singles as a pop singer in the '80s, and please Google him because he had an '80s mustache that is a must see.

Eventually, he decided to try his hand at songwriting in Nashville, which was a really good idea because he ended up having songs cut by people like Faith Hill, Michael McDonald, Garth Brooks, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, even the Everly Brothers, which makes me very jealous, and on and on and on.

He has, as a touring musician, he has toured with Carole King, Dan Fogelberg, Vince Gill, Andy Gibb.

I mean, it's diverse and he's currently on the road with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Okay, so how do I describe this next songwriter?

Well, first of all, he's not just a songwriter.

He is a singer, he's a musician, he's a multi-instrumentalist and he's an actor and a producer.

He's -- you can't put him in a box.

And musically, he's really hard to define because he's blues, he's folk, he's rock, he's jazz, he's country.

He's a little bit of everything, and I did Google him and I found this quote on his website that said, "I'm more interested in pleasing myself and making records that make me feel proud and make me feel like I've done my best.

And if other people like it, that's gravy."

Well, this man just picked up his fifth Grammy Award in January, so I would say that's a lot of gravy.

Yeah, and we met like most hip, successful, cool music people do in Carlyn at our kids school.

Well, the thing I love about doing these things very often is the closeness as friends.

I mean, Victoria and I -- Victoria was in the room when my son was born.

Not conceived, but when he was born, We stopped at that.

we thought that was weird.

But I did videotape his son being born.

And Kevin I met at one of the school functions for the school the children were going to.

In about two seconds, we discovered that we were born the same year in adjoining communities.

He's from Compton.

I'm from Inglewood, California.

So, you know.

It's a bond.

Yeah, it's a thing, you know.

And so I love being here.

I love doing these things.

And so, but it is about song.

So I'm going to do a song.

And this song I wrote with a good friend of ours by the name of Bob DiPiero, You all heard of Bob DiPiero?

I was worried because, you know, I'm going to let you on a little secret before Victoria called.

She wants to know what songs you're going to do, you know, around.

And I was like that really pissed me off.

[ Laughter ] I want to just do what I want to do in the moment.

So I just pick three songs, and I think this next song is appropriate.

This one I picked, it's a song I wrote with, just like the first song, I wrote with a gentleman named John Lewis Parker, who I've known since the '70s, and we write a lot of songs together.

And so...

He came in the room one day, he came out.

He came to Nashville to do some writing, and we sat down in the room, and he said -- He spotted the title of this song, And I just went, "Okay.

[ Trills ] About 10 minutes, it was all done because it was so easy.

I think one of the easiest songs I've ever done.

But it's not sexy.

I'll be the judge of that.

Tell the story behind this one.

This song was initially inspired when the news broke that Rush Limbaugh had been busted trying to cop a boatload of oxycodone.

So then I happened to be in New York City and I noticed that there was a Starbucks on every street corner, and they were all full.

And it spoke to me.

And I'm going to tell a little backstory about this next song.

And you can you can tell me if I'm wrong or right.

But when Kevin and I met in Carlyn and we got to be friends, he called me up.

And, you know, you never call me Victoria.

You always call me Vick Shaw or Victoria Shaw.

It's out of respect.

And we got together to write, and we started...

I don't know.

I guess I came in with this title or something?

I don't remember exactly how it all happened at your house, but we have kind of different ways of writing because he's this deep, just really cool, take your time, mold the song, feel it in the spirit.

And I'm like by the pound, we're going to write by the pound.

[ Laughs ] Write that song.

And we got together and we and we started to kind of meld it.

And at one point we wrote the verse and I said, "Okay, now we're going to go into the chorus."

And he goes, "Chorus?

No, we got to do another verse."

I'm like, "No, no, no.

That'll be too long.

Into the chorus."

"I don't think so."

It needs to go to another."

"I'm telling you, Kevin needs to be in the verse."

Argue, argue, argue.

He goes, "Let me just play this down after we wrote the chorus."

Right?

And he plays it down and he took the lyrics, crumpled it up and he threw it at me with a very interesting expletive, but it was actually meant as a compliment.

[ Laughter ] And we went on and we wrote the song.

Did I get that story accurate?

There's more to it.

That's not all.

What was more?

I was trying to, like, make it all like artistic.

And you go, "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

None of that stuff.

I got kids."

[ Laughter ] I got to feed my kids.

We're going right down to the pipe."

Get those money chords in there.

But you know what?

You know, you have to notice that when you write with me, like, you know, it's going to be, I mean...

It's not -- it's not like, you know, those big stars, that right those songs.

Not as many hear them, but hear it, you know, and it's kind of like, you know.

So I kind of don't care.

[ Laughter ] When I started my career, I just said, I'm not going after... Yeah, and five Grammys later, I don't think it matters that, you know.

Well, I wanted to go after, because, I mean, no one -- no one ever liked what I did hardly ever write.

No.

You know what it is?

So I just went like, "Well, if I like I, then..." Because you started out wanting to write songs for other people, but the songs, really, you were the one that sold them the best.

Yeah.

It's very nice.

Very nice indeed.

Otherwise I would have been really up creek.

And today's guests are no exception.

These guys, Nate, Kieran and Mark, they originally are from across the pond, as we say, from a town called Chelmsford, England, Had to write that down, which of course, Chelmsford, you know, the home of country music, as we all know.

[ Laughter ] But they actually grew up on all sorts of music, and, you know, country being one of them.

And their road to Nashville has a lot of detours and adventures, and that's a whole show in itself.

So we can't get into all that.

But just let me skip to the part where I was put together with them to write, and they came over to my house and proceeded to drive me crazy, okay?

They're like -- Writing with them is like herding cats.

You know, like, come on, come on, come on, focus, focus.

It's like the mother in me came out.

Okay, stop fidgeting on the guitar, stop doing this stuff.

But at the end of the day, we came out with a great song, a really solid friendship, and I came out with the satisfaction of knowing that they're just a little bit afraid of me.

And then we basically played the song in front of John McBride here in Nashville, and then he pushed us in front of Dan Huff.

They've been pounding the pavement.

You guys have paid your dues, and now it's starting to pay off.

It's really wonderful.

We have a song called "So Good," And it came out about five weeks ago and it got premiered on CMT -- Country Music TV.

[ Cheers and applause ] And we're well over half a million streams on there, so it's like -- it's crazy really to think that three British brothers can come here and kind of do some something.
