THIS IS THE ORIGINAL PAINTING THAT WAS COMMISSIONED BY THE KENTUCKY DERBY FOR THE 1991 DERBY, AND THE ARTIST, SAM SAVITT IS A FAMILY FRIEND OF OURS AND AFTER THE DERBY WAS OVER HE GAVE IT TO MY FATHER.

I ACTUALLY HAVE A FEW FROM THE 80'S.
AND I TOOK NOTE WHEN I WAS IN THE GOVERNOR'S MANSION HERE RECENTLY, THEY HAD SOME OF THESE HANGING THERE, SO THEY ARE KNOWN.
I'M SURE THIS ONE WAS KNOWN AT THE TIME.
OBVIOUSLY THE DERBY HUGE HERE, POPULAR SUBJECT IN KENTUCKY, SO THAT ALWAYS WORKS.

WELL, HE ILLUSTRATED THOSE BOOKS, BUT ONE THING, OVER IN EUROPE WITH ARTISTS, THEY REALLY TRY TO JOIN AND CREATE SOCIETIES TO REALLY HELP THEM FLOURISH, GET THEIR NAMES OUT, THAT SORT OF THING.
IT'S NEVER REALLY TAKEN HOLD IN AMERICA.
BUT ONE OF THE MORE PROMINENT ONES, AND IT'S ACTUALLY BASED HERE IN KENTUCKY DOWN IN LEXINGTON, IS THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF EQUINE ARTISTS.
AND SO HE WAS A FOUNDER OF THAT, RICHARD STONE REEVES WAS ANOTHER MAJOR FOUNDER.
SO THOSE ARE ALL REALLY WELL-KNOWN HORSE PAINTERS, EQUINE ARTISTS.
THAT WAS ANOTHER THING WITH HIM.
HE ALSO DID, I'M TRYING TO THINK OF HOW TO PHRASE IT, BUT THERE WERE, OH, MAYBE BREEDING LINES WITH THE SMITHSONIAN AND EVERYTHING.
AND IT'S REALLY CONSIDERED A MAJOR WORK.

SO I BROUGHT IT OUT LAST MONTH AND I PUT IT IN MY OFFICE AT NKU AND I JUST THOUGHT, WELL, THIS IS BEAUTIFUL AND YOU KNOW, THOUGHT I'D BRING IT HERE AND SEE WHAT IT'S WORTH.

SO SHORTLY AFTER SAM GAVE THIS TO MY FATHER, SHORTLY AFTER HE GAVE IT TO HIM, MY DAD JUST HAD IT FRAMED AND MATTED IT, JUST A TYPICAL PLACE.
SAM SAW IT AFTERWARDS AND WAS QUITE DISMAYED WITH HOW MY DAD HAD IT PUT TOGETHER.
HE WASN'T HAPPY WITH THE GLASS, HE WASN'T HAPPY WITH THE MATTING AND HE JUST DIDN'T FEEL LIKE IT PROPERLY SHOWCASED HIS WORK.

BUT WHAT REALLY PEGS THIS DOWN IS THAT ACROSS THE CENTER OF THESE LARGER ONES, ARE ALL WHAT WE CALL OLD EUROPEAN CUT AND THAT'S A STYLE BEING CUT AROUND 1910.
SO I KNOW WE'RE DEALING WITH SOMETHING HERE THAT'S OVER 100 YEARS OLD AND SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN HAVE BIGGER PIECES OF JEWELRY BUT SOMETIMES IT'S HARD TO HAVE A BETTER PIECE OF JEWELRY.
THAT'S THE CASE WITH YOUR RING.
BECAUSE ALL OF THE DIAMONDS IN HERE ARE AS CLOSE TO COLORLESS AND AS CLOSE TO FLAWLESS AS POSSIBLE.
I MEAN, YOU COULD TAKE SOMETHING FROM THAT ERA AND MAKE IT OF LESSER MATERIAL, BUT IN THIS INSTANCE, IF WE WERE TO SIT DOWN AND DO THIS, AND TO DO IT BY HAND BECAUSE IF WE LOOK CLOSER ALONG THESE EDGES, YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE SAW BLADE MARKS WHERE THE PERSON MADE THIS BY HAND AND ASSEMBLED THE PIECES.

ALL OF THAT WORK WAS DONE BY HAND AFTER THEY HAD ALREADY MATCHED THE DIAMONDS.
SO YOU HAVE SOMETHING THAT WITH DIAMONDS THAT ARE THIS SPECIAL, THEY'RE NOT YELLOW AT ALL, IN OTHER WORDS, THEY'RE COLORLESS, AND THERE'S REALLY NO INCLUSION IN THAT.
SO WHOEVER SAT DOWN WITH THE RECIPE TO MAKE A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF JEWELRY FOR SOMEONE IN YOUR FAMILY TOOK THE TIME TO PICK THE BEST THINGS THAT THEY COULD FIND AND TO ASSEMBLE THEM IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE.
REALLY, FOR YOU ALL TO HAVE WORN THIS THROUGH THE GENERATIONS.
THERE'S REALLY NOT ANY SCRATCH MARKS OR SAW MARKS AS IF IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SIZED.
SO HAS ANYONE EVER SIZED IT DO YOU THINK?

WELL, WHAT THESE ARE, YOU KNOW, THESE ARE SUPERPOSED AND THEY ARE MADE BY BROWNING AND THESE ARE THE ICONS OF SKEET AND TRAP.
THESE GUNS, THE BASE GUNS STARTED OFF WITH SOMETHING WAY BELOW THIS.
WHEN YOU ORDERED IT, YOU'D HAVE EMBELLISHMENTS, ENGRAVING AND ALL KINDS OF ADD-ONS.
THESE THINGS BECAUSE THEY WERE MADE IN BELGIUM, WERE THE MOST COLLECTABLE AND THE MOST DESIRABLE.
AND ESPECIALLY IN KENTUCKY HERE.
A LOT OF SKEET AND A LOT OF TRAP AND WE'RE COMING UP ON DOVE SEASON.
BUT THESE THINGS ARE ACTUALLY THE MOST DESIRABLE IN MY OPINION, CALIBER.
THESE ARE 4-10 AND BOTH OF THEM ARE 4-10.
AND THEY HAVE THREE-INCH CHAMBERS WHICH GIVE YOU A LITTLE EXTRA USE OF IT, A DIFFERENT TYPE OF GRADE SHELLS.
IT HAS THE VENTILATED BARREL, OR VENTILATED RIBS ON THEM.
THAT'S ANOTHER COST FACTOR THAT GOES INTO IT.
THEY ARE BOTH 26-INCH BARRELS WHICH IS ABOUT NORMAL.
AND LIKE ON THE BUTTS, YOU CAN SEE THIS HAS A STANDARD HARD PLASTIC BUTT PLATE AND THIS HAS A PADDED.
AND THAT WAS MAYBE BECAUSE THE ADJUSTMENT YOU KNOW AND IT WASN'T BECAUSE OF THE KICK.
BUT IT WAS AN ADJUSTMENT, THEY PULLED IT UP AND POINTED IT AND IT FIT BETTER WITH A, WITH THE RUBBER PAD ON IT.
THEY'RE BEAUTIFULLY CHECKERED WRIST AND FOREARMS ON THEM.
THE SCREWS ARE ALL ALSO ENGRAVED.
EVERYTHING ON THESE THINGS ARE GRAVED, AND THESE ARE THE MOST COLLECTABLE BECAUSE THEY WERE MADE IN BELGIUM.
AND THEY WENT OUT OF BUSINESS MAKING THEM IN BELGIUM.
BOTH OF THESE, I THINK ONE'S 1964, MAYBE ONE'S 1966.

BUT THESE TOOK A SPECIFIC PERSON TO BUY THEM.
THE GUYS THAT BOUGHT THIS WAS A PROFESSIONAL, AND HE KNEW WHAT HE WANTED AND HE DIDN'T CARE ABOUT PAYING FOR IT.
AND WHATEVER IT WAS, IF HE WANTED THAT VENTILATED RIB ON THERE, HE ORDERED IT.

>> Steve: THE STANDARD IS THE BLUE AND THEN YOU WOULD ADD THE ENGRAVING TO IT, THEN THEY HAD STAINLESS AND THEY WOULD APPLY GOLD AND INLAYS, I MEAN YOU COULD GET THEM OFF THE CHARTS.
BUT THESE ARE THE MODERN COLLECTIBLES, AND THESE ARE FROM THE 60'S SO THEY'RE YOU KNOW, 50 PLUS YEARS OLD.
THE CONDITION IS ABSOLUTELY EXQUISITE.
THEY'RE I'D SAY 98% CONDITION.

BROWNING, IT IS ABOUT PRESERVING HER CHILDHOOD MEMORIES AND EACH ONE OF HER 15,000 PLUS PIECES HAS ITS OWN STORY.
SHE IS THE OWNER AND CURATOR OF THE KATHLEEN SAVAGE BROWNING MINIATURES COLLECTION, A 3,300 SQUARE FOOT EXHIBIT AT THE KENTUCKY GATEWAY MUSEUM IN MAYSVILLE.
KNOWN LOCALLY AS KAYE, HER COLLECTION IS THE RESULT OF 40 YEARS OF TRAVELING AND ACQUIRING THE ONE-TWELFTH SCALE MINIATURES, MANY OF WHICH WERE HAND-CRAFTED BY WORLD RENOWNED MINIATURE ARTISANS.

WE TRY TO HAVE EXHIBITS THAT APPEAL TO EVERYONE FROM YOUNG CHILDREN ALL THE WAY UP TO WHATEVER AGE.

I WAS READING A BOOK TO MY CHILDREN.
TASHA TUDOR IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE ILLUSTRATORS AND BOOK WRITERS FOR CHILDREN.
AND THERE A BOOK CALLED "A IS FOR ANNABELLE" AND THE Q PAGE REALLY HIT ME BECAUSE, IT WAS Q IS THE QUILT ON GRANDMOTHER'S BED.
AND THE ILLUSTRATION WAS THE FOUR POSTER SCHOOL BE THAT I HAD SLEPT IN AS A CHILD.
THE PINK AND WHITE NINE PATCHWORK QUILT THAT WAS ON THAT BED THAT MY GRANDMOTHER HAD MADE FOR MY DOLL.
AND IT REALLY STRUCK A CHORD IN ME AND I THOUGHT I HAVE TO HAVE THAT.
THERE WAS SOMETHING ABOUT THAT BED THAT WAS VERY SPECIAL, AND I WANTED TO REMEMBER IT AND THAT WAS MY FIRST MINIATURE.

[MUSIC] >> Amy: MASTER METALWORKING CRAFTSMAN WILLIAM R. ROBERTSON, WHOSE HAS HAD HIS WORK FEATURED AT THE SMITHSONIAN AND THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY, HAS CONTRIBUTED SIGNIFICANTLY TO THE DECORATIVE ARTS OF THE KSB COLLECTION.
HE DESIGNED THE ENTIRE PALLADIAN-STYLED GALLERY INCLUDING THEIR FINE ARTS ROTUNDA, WHICH SHOWCASES EXQUISITE MINIATURES IN A STYLE SIMILAR TO THE PANTHEON IN ROME.
FROM LARGE SCALE TO SMALL, HE ALSO DESIGNED A PAIR OF VINTAGE ROLLER SKATES COMPLETE WITH A KEY TO WIDEN THEM WHICH IS ON DISPLAY AT KILGUS PHARMACY IN THE HISTORIC MAYSVILLE EXHIBIT.
>> Kathleen: SO HERE WE HAVE THE COX BUILDING WHICH I FEEL IS THE CENTERPIECE OF DOWNTOWN MAYSVILLE.
ONE OF THE REASONS I WANTED TO DO IT WAS BECAUSE IT WAS IN SUCH DISREPAIR, AND IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME TO PRESERVE OUR COX BUILDING.
SO, I LOOK INSIDE, AND I SEE MEMORIES FROM THREE YEARS OLD.
THE COKE ON THE COUNTER, I USED SELL MY DAD'S HANGERS FROM HIS WHITE COATS TO BUY A SIX CENT COKE.
THE COMIC BOOKS IN THE BACK.

KILGUS ALWAYS ALLOWED ME TO SIT ON THE FLOOR AND READ THE COMIC BOOKS.
SO, IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL PLACE TO BE GROWING UP.
[MUSIC] >> Kathleen: HERE WE HAVE THE RUSSELL THEATRE WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOST INCREDIBLE BUILDINGS IN MAYSVILLE.
IT'S A ROCOCO-STYLE THEATER, IT'S AN ATMOSPHERIC THEATRE, AND IT'S ONE OF THE LAST REMAINING IN THE UNITED STATES.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT PEOPLE DON'T RECOGNIZE WHEN THEY SEE IT IS THAT THESE ARE ACTUAL BRICKS.
THESE ARE REAL BRICKS.
EVERY BRICK HAS BEEN CUT DOWN TO ONE TWELFTH SCALE FROM AN ORIGINAL BRICK, AND EACH ONE HAS BEEN HAND LAID, GLUED ON AND THEN THE WHOLE PIECE WAS MORTARED AND THEN AGED.
>> Amy: WELL, WE CERTAINLY DIDN'T HAVE TO VENTURE FAR FROM THE EXTERIOR TO THE INTERIOR OF THE THEATRE, AND I KNOW YOU HAVE A SPECIAL STORY.
>> Kathleen: I DO, I DO.
WHEN I WAS SIX YEARS OLD, MY GRANDMOTHER GAVE ME AN AMETHYST RING FOR MY BIRTHDAY.
IT WENT OFF MY FINGER, AND AFTER THE MOVIE WAS OVER THE LIGHTS WENT UP AND WE COULD NEVER FIND THAT RING.
SO ASHBY AND JED WHO WERE THE ARTISANS WHO CREATED THIS INTERIOR OF THE RUSSELL THEATRE, THEY HAD COMMISSIONED LORIANNE POTS WHO IS A GENUINE JEWELRY MAKER TO MAKE THE RING THAT I HAD LOST AND IT'S UNDERNEATH ONE OF THESE CHAIRS.

>> Kathleen: SO, WE PUT A LITTLE GLITTER ON IT JUST SO WE COULD FIND IT WHEN WE NEEDED TO.
>> Amy: THESE ELEGANT MINIATURE ART PIECES ARE ALL MADE FROM REAL MATERIALS AND ARE IN WORKING CONDITION.
FOR INSTANCE, THE SILVER ALL NEEDS TO BE POLISHED, THE CLOCKS KEEP REAL TIME AND THE CELLOS ACTUALLY PLAY MUSIC.
ALL OF THE JEWELRY IS MADE FROM REAL GOLD, PEARLS AND GEMSTONES.
NOTHING IS SPARED TO BRING A TRUE REPLICA TO LIFE, LIKE THE IMPRESSIVE SPENCER HOUSE WHICH WAS THE ANCESTRAL HOME OF LADY DIANA.
ALL OF THE CEILINGS WERE HAND CARVED AND PAINTED USING 180 SHEETS OF GOLD GILT.
ONE OF THE WALL COVERINGS WAS MADE FROM A REAL SILK WEDDING DRESS.
THIS LABOR OF LOVE COST ROUGHLY $250,000.
ALL OF THE CARPETS ARE ALSO HANDMADE.
SOME ON REAL LOOMS AND SOME MADE OF 112 GAUGE SILK, LIKE THIS MAGNIFICENT RUG WHICH WAS A RECENT ADDITION AND COST ABOUT $8,000.
IN 2007, KAYE PURCHASED THIS PAIR OF REMARKABLE CANDELABRAS WITH 48 ALLEGORICAL CARVINGS FOR ABOUT $10,000.
THE UPKEEP FOR THE GALLERY IS A FULL-TIME JOB ALONE, BUT KAYE IS COMMITTED TO SHOWCASING THESE STUNNING WORKS OF ART TO THE PUBLIC.
THAT DOESN'T MEAN SHE'S DONE COLLECTING, BECAUSE COLLECTING FOR KAYE IS A WAY TO PRESERVE HISTORY, AND IN DOING SO SHE'S MAKING SURE THAT HER OWN STORY IS TOLD WELL INTO THE FUTURE.

GENRE SCENE IS SORT OF CAPTURING A MOMENT IN TIME, SORT OF A MOMENT OF EVERYDAY LIFE.

IT MIGHT HAVE EVEN BEEN AN EXHIBITION PIECE.
SOMETHING THAT HE PAINTED TO PLACE IN AN EXHIBITION OR POSSIBLY IN A GALLERY.
