Voters approved the merger between the city and county governments in 1972, creating the Lexington Fayette Urban County government on January 1st of 1974.
The merged government became Kentucky's first urban county government.
50 years later, it remains one of a handful in the entire nation.
Mayor Linda Gordon says the decision helped prevent duplication of services and made local government more efficient.
A ceremony marking the occasion is planned for March 21st.
