Man, it is my pleasure and my honor.
Tell us a little bit about how you got started playing music.
Music kind of found me, man.
It, uh, it saved my life.
It wasn't on my list of things to do.
I, uh, was born and raised and bred to be -- to play the game of football, I thought.
Okay.
Alright.
And, uh... I had some opportunities, but my true senior year at college I ended up dislocating my knee early in the season.
And so all of the accolades and everything kind of disappeared.
Um, and, uh, I moved to Iowa City.
I was working five jobs and kind of staggering my schedule basically 20 hours a day, just working.
And one of the more than full -- mostly full-time jobs that I had, my boss heard me singing in the office one day, and it just so happened that her son is a drummer and they were just starting a blues band.
That's how it got started.
She forced me to -- [ Laughter ] She -- She twisted -- She tricked me into auditioning for the blues band, and here I am 30-some-odd years later.
Involuntary career in music.
Yeah.
Started from that.
Was there a moment where, after that point, where you kind of thought, "Alright, I'm going to stop all the five different gigs, like, I'm gonna focus on this and kind of see where it takes me"?
Well, music kind of took over.
I started five jobs and singing occasionally, and then singing a little more and four jobs and whittled it down.
During that time, I met the woman who would eventually become my wife currently.
And, uh -- And, uh, when she was -- I was down to just one full-time job and music, and she was pregnant with our first child.
And, uh, I came in from work one day, and I said, "I think I'm going to do music full time."
And she looked at me and said, "It's about time."
[ Chuckles ] And so, yeah.
So that's -- that's where the -- the door opened, guess.
I got an opportunity early in my career.
I got to do a... an off-Broadway play.
I got to play a blues singer.
Typecasting.
[ Laughter ] I'm okay with that.
Worked out well for me.
Got me to New York, you know?
Every morning before play rehearsal, I'd catch the subway and I go to the SoHo area, and I'd go to this little tiny bagel shop and go in and I'd sit at the little counter.
Get my bagel, my coffee, and I'd sit at the counter.
And so I'd sit there with my guitar and I'd face out the window and watch people.
And I'd never seen that amount of foot traffic in my life.
I thought it was cool.
The third day I was there, I had this thought roll through my mind -- "What if love at first sight hits somebody in a place like this and that person's like, 'Wow, you see 'em?'
And then they get swallowed by that tsunami of souls that walks past in New York."
I was like, "That's messed up."
And I thought, "That's a messed up thought," and I went on about my day.
The next day I'm sitting at the bagel shop.
Same thought bounces into my head.
Third day, comes right back.
I'm like, "Damn, I gotta write this song."
And so I started taking the story and pulling it apart and putting it back together.
About 30 days in, my wife came to New York, joined me in New York... ...and I said, "Baby, I wrote this song," and I told her the story.
She's like, "Oh, cool, I want to hear the song."
And I played the song for her.
She's like, "Oh, man, that's a pretty song.
Who was she?"
[ Laughter ] So, this is a pretty song that almost ended my marriage.
And so I hope that y'all dig on this.
[ Laughs ] This song called "Something Special About You."

What about blues music -- and maybe what about your music -- do you feel allows audiences from many different backgrounds to find some connection to your music?
Well, everybody's been through something.
We oftentimes look at blues and we see it as a sad presentation, melancholy and all of these things.
But technically what it is, is it's a celebration of being and existing and knowing that if you're going to experience pain, you get to enjoy joy.
If you're going to experience hardship, you also can prosper.
All of those things, all of those stories, have been told over and over again, and people continue to live each and every one of those stories over and over again.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
I know with every album you pull from different influences, but maybe your kind of perennial folks you always refer to.
The majority of the people that have the biggest influence on me are the people that I actually got to watch as I was learning.
Now, from a standpoint of how I want to sound or the sounds and the stories, how I want to tell them, you know, there's, of course, the three Kings, you know -- B.B.
King, Freddie King, and Albert King as far as guitar playing and that kind of stuff.
But from a standpoint of storytelling, Bill Withers is my guy.
But, you know, artists like Bob Dorough and artists like Tony Brown, those have been the people -- and, uh, you know, Dennis McMurrin -- those were the people that I got to watch, uh, when I was growing up, and there was other the people that made a living.
Dan Johnson, another one.
You mentioned Bob Dorough as kind of one of your influences.
He's joining you tonight for a couple of songs.
What do you feel is kind of Bob's impact on you, impact on the blues here in Iowa?
One of the things that I got from a person like Bob is that you have to be willing to hustle.
If you're a full-time musician, you have to work wherever -- You know, if you're gonna stay within the state, you've got to work the entire state.
But beyond that, you also have to be willing to do business.
And that part of it is something that I'm still learning.
I wish I would have had more of Bob's business sense in my early career.
Sure.
Um, I'm doing alright now, don't get me wrong.
It's just had I started with the right mindset, I think my -- everything would be flowing a little bit different.
But it's still a beautiful thing to see and to know.
Again, there's -- there's a lot more to learn to this as a business.
Ladies and gentlemen, brother Bob Dorough.

[ Cheers and applause ] Big Medicine -- good for what ails you.
Okay, so The Blue Band was a six- to eight-piece band, had unbelievable charts and rehearsals over and over and over again.
And so when The Blue Band ended, Jeff Petersen, the guitar player that I played with for now 43 years, and I decided one thing -- no rehearsals!
[ Chuckles ] And so I talked Big Medicine into no rehearsals on this one.
