I'm Kira Willey, and I'm so happy you're here.
You know, we can all make music in lots of different ways.
We can clap our hands, we can tap our feet, we can use our voices, we can play instruments.
Kids Jam is all about making music.
And today we get to make music with Joanie Leeds.
She's here with songs about being kind to each other and taking care of ourselves and our planet.
And she'll get us singing along and clapping our hands, too.
A little later, we'll head to the music room with some friends to create some of our own music and do some movement and mindfulness, too.
But right now, let's get ready to jam with Joanie Leeds.
- Thank you so much, Kira.
It's so good to be back here at PBS and I'm going to be singing lots of songs from my ten children's albums.
And the first song that I'm going to sing is the title track All The Ladies, which was my Grammy Award-winning album.
And this song is all about lifting each other up, and you watching at home, you can actually do some hand motions with me.
You're going to take your hands and you're going to sing... ♪ Lift me up... ♪ And put your hands way up in the air.

I went on a trip once to Tanzania, which is really, really far away in the Serengeti.
And I met these very ferocious animals and I actually brought one with me.
It's very small, though, so you'll have to come real close.
Can you see this?
This is not just a lion.
This is a lioness.
It's a female lion.
It's the mama lion.
And I learned a lot about the lioness.
They're the ones that do the hunting.
They're the ones that do that gathering.
They're the ones that do the nurturing.
They take care of their cubs and they feed the whole family.
And I thought it really sounded just like a mama lion.
And it got me excited because I feel like we have a lot in common, you and me.
And so I wrote this song called Lioness.
And you at home, you can do a really, really big job for me because whenever you hear the word lioness, what I want you to do is to give me your most ferocious roar.
So I went to school for musical theater and drama, and I'm going to give my very best lion roar.
Let's see if you can do it at home.
Are you ready?
Okay.
Rrrrrr!
All right.
That was mine.
Can I hear yours?

So this is Lioness.

This whole album is about gender equality and breaking glass ceilings.
And equality is a big word, and it means that everybody is treated equally.
We're all treated the same.
And it got me thinking.
I was doing some research and I was on the computer and I found out about this tribe, the Mosuo people, who live all the way on the other side of the globe, and they are actually in a matrilineal society, which is a really big word for the women are the ones in charge.
And, you know, it got me thinking - what would it be like if here in America the women were the ones that were in charge?
You know, we've never had a female president, have we?
No, we sure have not.
And I was wondering if all of the women were the lawmakers, would things be different?
It just got me thinking.
I asked myself the question, if girls ruled the world, what would be different?
So this song is called If Girls Ruled the World.
And you can help me out by making some big, strong arms, too.
Here we go.

- Somebody who followed her dreams and she said that I am going to accomplish really big things from a very young age is someone that I admire very, very much.
And I want to tell you a little bit about her.
Her name was Ruth Bader Ginsburg and a lot of people called her RBG, which are her initials.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, she grew up at a time where not a lot of women were lawyers, and certainly not a lot of women were judges or sat on the Supreme Court, the biggest court in all the land that makes really important rules for our country.
Well, Ruth Bader Ginsburg would not take no for an answer, and she worked really hard despite everybody telling her no.
So I'm going to grab my guitar.
And I'm going to show you what Ruth Bader Ginsburg looks like, because my daughter let me borrow her little doll.
So, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, she had something around her neck that she would use called a jabot.
Very fancy, lacy jabot.
And then she would hold a gavel and she would dissent.
That means she would say no when she thought something was unfair.
And so I'm going to tell you a little bit about Ruth Bader Ginsburg's life.

Now, RBG was an American hero.
And I happen to think that my grandfather, my zaide, was an American hero as well, because he fought in World War II.
He was an immigrant who came from another country, and he spoke a different language And this language is called Yiddish.
There's a lot of Yiddish words that you may hear today, and it's not a language that a lot of people speak.
But I wrote this really silly song, taking all of my favorite Yiddish words and putting them all together in one song.
And it's called Shayne Punim, which means sweet face.
So, my grandparents, what they used to do when they saw me, they would squeeze my cheeks, and go shayne punim, So if you're at home, you can go shayne punim.

♪ Now, something else that's very important to me besides gender equality, of course, is taking care of our beautiful planet.
Now, there are so many ways that we can do it, and a lot of them are right in your home.
You could turn off the water when you're brushing your teeth.
We waste a lot of water that way.
We can turn off the lights when we leave our rooms or when we go into another room.

And, of course, you can put your recyclables right into the recycling bin.
