Ascending the throne at 22 during the Seven Years' War, King George found himself at the helm of a nation in flux.
Dubbed a tyrant by Thomas Jefferson and an autocrat by members of his own parliament, the King was also known to be a faithful and gentle partner to his wife, Queen Charlotte.
While patriots wrote aggressive grievances to the King, those close to him knew him to be a cultured man with a hobby of adding books to the Royal collection.
He also suffered serious bouts of illness for much of his adult life.
By the end of his term, he became mentally unfit to rule.
In 1811, his son, George IV, was appointed to carry out the crown's duties as the Prince Regent.
