Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship-Hi, I'm -Eric Ford from Made Here.
-Director Everett Raven's -made his recent film Kismet -in the wilderness of North -Conway, New Hampshire, -focusing on a -group of teenagers -in a rock climbing program.
-They not only learned -climbing techniques, -but considered the potential -of their future lives.
-!You can watch Kismet and other -great made here films -streaming on our website -and through the PBS app.
-Enjoy the film -and thanks for watching.
-I feel like destiny is in -destiny.
-Makes it sound like -your path is set in stone.
-And it's been proven -multiple times -that you can choose -which path you take.
-But there's some things -you can't really tell -why they happened.
-Even when you're 70 or 80.
-Just way old.
-Okay, I should have done this -beforehand.
-What is your name?
-Camera?
-Films?
Camera.
-Oh, can you see?
You can't.
-All right.
-Jaden, my name is Alex.
-My name is Ben.
Im Clara.
-My name is Miguel.
-I'm Zoe.
Logan.
Jimmy.
-Jimmy Rock, rock, rock, -rock... -Like I said, dont run, -dont film.
-Do you think it's possible -to change your future?
-That's a difficult question.
-Back at home.
-It's very urban.
-I don't get to see -much of the woods -compared to coming here.
-I don't really get outside -or, like, -I don't go to camps at all.
-If I wasn't here, -I know I probably -would just be working.
-Why are you here?
-I don't know.
-!Coming here was the completely -new experience.
-I should never thought -that I would come across.
-I knew that -I was scared of heights, but -I really wanted to try -something new.
-!Are you afraid of heights?
No.
-I'm terrified.
-I just don't wanna do it.
-Why?
Scary.
-Hey, so you guys, it's -very okay to be nervous.
-That's part of it.
-!I'm not really afraid of much, -like, other than things like -I should be afraid of -because of me.
-Like bees.
-Because I'm allergic.
-But I think my biggest fear -so far has been lowering.
-Just just trusting the rope -Like, the first day -that I was here.
-First full day -that I was here -climbing was just putting -trust into random strangers -and it can be really scary -putting yourself -out there sometimes.
-No, no no.
-Fiona-Are you talking -about the short guy?
-Yeah.
-Wait, flip it though -Okay.
-Any other takers?
-Dude, this kid's slab -technique is outstanding.
-!Have you been climbing at home -in Portland?
-No, not at all.
-Not at all.
-Dude, you seem so comfortable -on the wall this year.
-Are you?
-No.
-Alright, Jimmy, take.
-What?
-Take.
-Alright, one sec.
-Kaden, you are took.
-!All right, I'm going to do some -All right!
-Oh, he's going to do- -okay.
-!You're only moving your upper bo -Yeah.
-You struggling?
-It's a little hard -at this angle.
-It's a cliff.
-(Inaudbile) -Is it recording?
-Yeah.
-Is there like, like- -can it hear?
-Yes.
-But its not recording.
-!So like, were outside right now -know what Im saying?
-And, um... -!I beat this bum at climbing... -things of that nature, yeah.
-I'm from Angola, Luanda, -but, I came to Maine -about six years ago.
-This place is different from -home in many ways, -!and that did feel scary to me.
-It took time for me -to trust the equipment, -the process, the people, -but this year I feel like -things have changed -!and I feel like this is a very, -special kind of group.
-Thats a nice ass car- -Damn.
-Thats a 80s car.
-Who likes old cars?
-I dont think its 80s, -I think its like, 90s.
-!Why does everybody like old cars -Because they're gorgeous.
-I think theyre ugly.
-Its not gold.
-No, "old.
-!Oh, I thought you said "gold .
-Oh yeah, that is not gold.
-Is that a mustang?
-I dont know.
-I cant see it.
-!It starts with a "B , I think, o -Oh, it might be a- -Oh, that's a Corvette!
-Am I in your way?
-No.
-Youre exactly where -you should be.
-Is that really cold?
-Bro just ran for it.
-!I've been climbing since I was -really young.
-But, Id say its -been a pretty important part -for me to get to know -other people -and other places... -!from the secluded town I am from -!I'm a very anti-social person, -so... -meeting people is a -very scary thing for me.
-Yo, Kaden!
-Hi!
-Yeah, I believe everyone's -here for a reason.
-What that reason is, -I don't know -but, definitely a reason.
-Yeah, I- -How are you feeling -about this contract?
-Does it feel like, -representative of, like what -you do and don't -want to see this week?
-Oh, yeah.
-Yeah?
-Do you feel like -anything is missing?
-Beans.
-Aside from- -Aside from beans.
-Yeah!
-Aside from food items.
-Okay.
-So the most important -part of a contract -!is for it to be signed, right?
-So, um... -However you would like to, -whether you like to, like, -put your actual signature -or like, write your name- -!write your name, it could be a l -!Each day we should put one line.
-but just sign something -in your hand print.
-Could we do nicknames?
-Yeah, of course.
-Anything that represents you.
-All right guys.
-At home and at school, -I make myself, like, as -small as possible.
-But here, -it feels like I'm a part of -something.
-Like, I'm a part of something -maybe -bigger than myself.
-Well, it feels good because, -like, -my life is a mess really, -!in general and always has been, -so, like, feeling appreciated -just for like something small -kind of helps.
-And I wouldn't be in this -program -if I didn't go through -everything that I have -in my life, -so, it kind of like got me to -this point.
-Without experience, -I think it's impossible -to grow... -without learning and -trying new things, -you can't expand -what you know and... -expand how you feel and -I think that's exactly what -we're doing here.
-All right, who are we- -Im not ready.
-Cut 2!
-Who are we with today?
-Were with Benner right here.
-!Its your boy, ugh cut that sh- -Who are we with?
-Who are we with today?
-Who are, is the question- -Who am I with today?
-How are we feeling?
-Uh, I'm feeling great today.
-!About to go climb some, you know -big mountains, you know?
-Yeah.
Things of that nature.
-Nature!
-Things of that nature, -know what Im saying?
-Know what Im saying?
-Real gang sh*t.
-All right.
-Right there, right there, -right beside you.
-I was trying to tell you, -theres a snake behind you.
-Where?
-Right there!
-Yo!
Im- -Oh, oh, oh, right there.
-I want to catch it.
-I know.
-If it wouldnt be disturbing -the wildlife, I would.
-The zoom on this thing is cr- -So for all of you all -!who have tied a figure 8 before, -and for those of you who -have not, -you take the one with -the tail in the front -and you put it in the back, -and you should see an "X -in the middle of a circle, -!
"X in the middle of the circle.
-OKay, and then, a second -way to tie it, ready?
-Uncross your hands -and then recross your hands.
-That might be easier -for some of you.
-No, no, no, no.
-Its easier, right?
-Yeah.
-Yep.
-I have to then go like this- -You got it.
-Good job.
-Oh, not quite .
-Do it with your eyes -open, and then try it.
-Yep.
-Two four, six, eight, ten.
-Ropes not too long.
-My things all set.
-Can I climb now?
-Well?
What first?
-What do you ask first?
- "Am I on belay ?
-Am I on belay?
-You got this Benner.
-Yep, you are on belay.
-Yo, slay!
-Nice, Zoe!
-!Couple body lengths, and uh... -Awesome, good belaying.
-!A couple body lengths and then- -!And then, then you can kind of -transition to a more normal -amount of slack -because you dont want -to exhaust yourself, -right?
-Yeah.
-!You want to be able to give uh, -provide a good belay for -the whole time -!that the climber is climbing, so -Yeah.
-I trust the people here.
-And they also trust me.
-I feel like that's important.
-I've told some of the people -here, like stuff -I haven't told other people -that I actually, like, -hang out with a lot... -and they haven't told anyone -or like thrown it back in my -face, like, -other people have so... -yeah.
-Trust to me means a lot, -especially when belaying, -!you need to have a lot of trust -in that person -for you to be able to climb -well and freely.
-!Cameraman, keep your composure.
-Yeah, first time I did it, -it was tough.
-I was... -Um... -yeah, I was scared, -but then over time, -you get used to doing it, -and now that this -the second year of it, -just... -Yeah, I'm used to it.
-Just like that, dude.
-You got it.
-Whoa, way to go for it!
-Sick!
-Way to go for it!
-Benner, that was so brave!
-I feel... -nervous and scared at first, -but then, I just... -quiet those thoughts -down and just think, -if I get through it, -it'll be okay.
-And then I could say that -I did it.
-Yeah, Clara.
-Good footwork.
-Get breathing.
-Keep it aerobic.
-Yeah, there you go, Clara.
-Toes straight into the wall.
-You proud of yourself?
-Yeah.
-Yeah, Clara!
-Woo!
-Ready to come down?
-!All right, so take super tight.
-Do the same belay motion, -make it super tight, -as tight as you can.
-I did that wrong.
-!Same thing, you did do it wrong.
-Thank you for recognizing.
-All right as tight as it can- -you feel it tight, Clara?
-All right, so, -now tell her you got her.
-Got you!
-I've been with these -people for a year, and... -I just trust them.
-I love knowing that things -are under my control.
-!While other things may not be... -!it gives me a sense of sanity.
-Do you trust yourself?
-Yeah.
-I trust myself.
-Yeah!
-And you are out, my dude!
-All right, your turn.
-You don't have to run.
-But let's just put our feet -in front of us.
-And here you can- -I need my feet on the ground.
-Here, buddy, buddy, buddy, -buddy.
-Let's, let's go for a stroll.
-Link arms.
-You got it.
-Im balanced.
-All right.
-Just stay here.
-Just relax.
-Does anybody have- -!Does anybody have any riddles?
-No!
No riddles right now!
-No one talk!
-Alex, Alex, Alex.
-No!
-!You may know this riddle already -!so, I'm giving you a slam dunk.
-!I don't know, it's been like a -!thing ever since I was little, -like, I've only been on two -!roller coasters in my whole life -!because I don't like the feeling -of my feet, like... -swaying around and, like, -not touching anything.
-Makes me panic, -!because I don't like being like, -I, I like the ground.
I like -feeling close to the ground.
-If you want me to be honest, -I don't trust myself.
-I see other people -trusting you a lot.
-Yeah, I have to start -trusting myself a lot more.
-But, like... -Its not like, -as fast as people think.
-Girl!
You went up, not down!
-Okay.
-Slower, slower, slower.
-I think I have the power -and the ability to change -my future.
-It's kind of hard... -because I don't know.
-Technically, I don't know if -I do or not, -but I believe I do.
-I feel like that's what my -life is going to be, just... -a lot of change, and -a lot of questioning, and a -lot of decision -but I don't believe that life -!is going to be a straight path.
-!All right, so zero points each.
-!I would like you guys to reflect -on the day, -!and tell me one specific moment -where you felt really -proud of yourself, -and one specific moment -where you felt -really proud of one -other person.
-I'm very surprised -I got up before -you guys actually woke us up, -so I'm happy for myself -about that.
-I'm not gonna lie.
-Yeah!
-And, I am thankful for you -trying to get me to -climb and try -to beat my comfort wall down.
-I was proud of myself -when I rappelled... -and... -I was really proud of Kaden -for doing that... -I appreciate it.
-Uh, I dont know what -its called.
The brain?
-The climb?
The brain?
-Yeah.
-Appreciate it.
-And everybody else that -tried it.
-I was kind of just proud -of everybody -for just being there today.
-It was just really nice.
-Yeah.
-What do you think your -life is -going to look like when -youre older?
-!Hopefully a better one than when -it started at.
-Hopefully not staying in a -rundown house.
-What does that house look -!like that you want to stay in?
-One like this.
-Ooh, ooh, Ive been -waiting for that.
-Thats 8!
-Thats 10!
-Thats a 10!
-That's 10!
-Yo!
Please!
-You dont have one in there!
-12!
-Oh, I'm in the middle?
-Anyone want sausage?
-Yeah, amazing!
-This egg is so good.
-Oh, yeah.
-Whose fork is this?
-And then you start over.
-1,2- -No, I have to- -!I have to step away for a minute -Alex, you're gonna have -to teach Zoe, okay?
-OK, wait.
-Ready?
-1, 2, 3... -1, 1 , 1, 1- -So, how are you?
-Hows your sandwich?
-What type of sandwich- -What type of sandwich -you got today?
-I got a Nutella sandwich.
-Just Nutella?
-Yeah.
-Yeah, that's right.
-Let me get a close up of -that Nutella sandwich.
-How are we?
-Doing good today.
-I'm about to go repel down.
-What time is it?
-This little rock right here.
-Nice.
-Do I feel like my trust -has ever been broken?
-Here?
No.
-Trust means that... -you can depend on someone, -and they can depend on you.
-And, I feel like that freedom -will help us all grow.
-Everything you learned about -!using your feet still applies he -It might not seem like -it, because -!its harder for your upper body.
-but it still applies.
-There you go, man.
-I got you.
-Now look around- -I feel very special -being able to be a part of... -this group, because I know -that the people here -I can trust.
-I, I have a really hard -time doing that... -!it's hard for me to trust after.
-instances in the past... -um... -mainly my parents -breaking my trust.
-!I've worked so much just to... -have a better life, -and -show my siblings -that it's possible to -be different -than how my parents were... -and to grow past what we -have gone through.
-And... -I feel like... -you can get past everything -!that has happened, will happen, -and is happening.
-That, I- -That's why I'm here.
-That's it!
-Way to go!
-Yep!
-Yep!
-Woo!
-I think climbing has -taught me... -To be, like, free.
-I feel like I could change -future by, like... -!making my decisions different.
-And... -I think I'll live probably -in a... -warm... -state.
-When I get older, I want a... -a nice... -nice life... -!just, be able to live peacefully -with a family.
-We came from that direction.
-The Pinkham Notch.
-Oh- -Were coming South from- -Isn't that- -Isnt it there?
-!I dont know, I dont remember.
-Its not there?
-South is that way.
-Yeah.
-You have a compass open?
-Yeah, I do.
-We came from the Notch -over there.
-Nah then, thats not the -Notch if its South!
-We came- which way -was the Notch?
-I thought the Notch was -further North?
Yeah.
-I mean, the Pinkham Notch.
-Yeah, we came from- -Wait are you talking about, -like, um- -Chicken.
-Look at all those- -All right.
-How bad does that look?
-!Looks better, like, thats way -more puffier on this side- -Wait, yeah hold it, hold it -like that.
-Why does this one look -!so much skinnier than that one?
-Less blood flow maybe?
-That ones puffier.
-Ready?
-Fell off immediately.
-All right, so... -!Have you learned anything today?
-!Have I learned anything today?
-Today, I have learned... -the ABC song... -uh... -ABC sort of thing from... -the- -fellow Kismet, -Kismet kid.
-All right... -so, since its Friday, -the last day of climbing, -!what are you going to miss about -camp, after?
-Im going to miss everything, -to be honest; -the view, -you guys, -trying to face my fears -every day... -like, everyone here.
-!Like, if this hasn't happened, -then, -I don't know what would have.
-Alex is going to repel- -I dont know about fate, but, -yeah, I believe everyone's -here for... -for a reason.
-Coming here, -some people are able -to come out of their... -of the shadow, -!that they were struggling with -when they were at home, -!and it really allows them to... -to be who they wanted -to be in the first place.
-You got this, Alex.
-I saw one for the first -time, so- -!Clara, can I ask you a question -while youre climbing?
-Yeah.
-Is it worth it, doing -hard things?
-Is it worth it, doing -hard things?
-Yeah.
-Is it worth it?
-Yes.
-Yeah, it is.
-Initially, I thought I wasn't -going to -climb much at all, -but after climbing for a bit, -I realized that -!I'm actually really comfortable -with climbing the wall, -and I'm actually -really good at it.
-There you go, Benner!
-There he goes!
-Yeah, bud!
-!Yo, when it comes to climbing, -youre getting -Benner and Benner every day.
-Yeah, you keep getting -Benner and Benner.
-Yeah, Benner!
-!I came this close to saying it- -Yeah, Benner!
-Come on, dude!
-Look at that!
-Come on, bud!
-Yay!
-Look at that arm jam!
-Yeah, Benner!
-Find the right foot.
-Find the right foot.
-Yeah!
-Thats it.
Thats it!
-Yo!
-Absolutely nailed it!
-Woo, woo, woo!
-Hey!
Give us a flex up there.
-Yeah, give us a flex.
-Flex on the gram up there.
-Ohh!
-Hey!
-!Kids here just give me different -!perspectives of life and, like.. -The friendships here -that I made is -something that -I would not lose- -I'll do anything to not lose.
-When I'm older, -I want to feel how I feel -right now.
-I want to feel like -I could do... -anything.
-Happy -Birthday to you!
-Happy Birthday dear Ava!
-Happy birthday to you!
-And many more!
-Woo!
-Okay!
-I do think Im going to miss -this place a lot, yeah.
-After last year, -I'm not gonna be able to see -these kids all the time -like I did here.
-I just, I really enjoy being -around them, -and I wish I got to see them -more, -!Do you know what kismet means?
-Literally?
-Like, literally?
-Say "hi to the camera.
-Hey, what kind of movies -do you like?
-Lets go!
-Youre doing amazing!
-Who we got here today?
-Yeah, I believe everything -happens for a reason.
-It also depends on your -own choices.
-I believe that I... -don't have a destiny.
-I don't- -I don't believe that -things are set in stone.
-!Honestly, I don't know, I just l -I don't know if I meant to do -anything right now.
-That I'm destined to be here?
-Are you?
I dont know.
-I don't know!
-I mean... -this is just luck.
-Do you think that you -have a destiny?
-Yeah.
-Maybe.
-Just, -to live life, I suppose.
-Lets go, Everett!
-Woo!
-Let's go!
-Woo!
-Yeah!
-I believe in you, man!
-Whatever you do, -don't look down.
-Oh, my God, he's going up!
-If he looks down- -Woo!
That was good!
-Nice job!
-Can we get a high five here?
-Got it, yeah!
-Hey!
-One more, one more!
-Deer in the headlights.
-And then just press -the red button -when you're done recording.
-And, don't worry about -breaking it.
