What are their families like?

These are some of the biggest questions that many of us might never find answers to.
Not everybody accepts Korean adoptees in the same ways.
It's not hard to see how that can shape a big part of how you experience the world.
How you craft your own identity.
Oh, we have the same colors.
But at least here that identity, that the camp provides us, that we can forge together, is something that we don't have to hide from.

[music] This is our 33rd year of this camp.
100s of families come back every year to make the trek, all the way up here, What's been your favorite thing about camp so far?
Umm...
Being with you!
[laughing] Okay!
We're right here in Snow Mountain Ranch, which is just outside of Fraser, Colorado.
We have different, festivities and activities.
Okay, let me show you.

We did K-pop.
[K-pop music] we just did an activity relating identity to a Korean food called gimbap.
We were talking about how each ingredient that you put inside represents a part of your identity.
oftentimes as a minority person, we are forced to prove ourself and explain ourselves.
Sushi and gimbap are different dishes, but when I was in the United States initially in the year 2003, American people knew sushi, but they didn't know gimbap.
And they say, “Oh, it's Korean sushi.” No, it's not Korean sushi.
It's gimbap.
Definition of culture, definition of food is also, a big part of exploring our identity.
many of us, what we shared in common was that we came from predominantly non-Asian communities.
In Colorado, there's not a lot of Asian diversity.
growing up and like knowing that I was adopted was for sure something I had to process and handle.
I got asked a good deal of times, “Where are you really from?” “When are you going back to China?” “Why did your parents give you up?” When I was in elementary school, it was definitely a big thing, because little kids just, don't really know how to process things like that.
We could pretend that these were microphones.
You can.

[laughing] She is going to help us read a very special book.
Okay?
So her mom said that she dreamed of her eyes.
Because everyone has such special and unique eyes.
What do you like seeing about the other Korean girls?
Well, it's kind of a new thing for me.
I came in, in 1996, as one of the third graders.
This was the first time, that I was surrounded by other Asian faces.
Koreans do have a certain type of eyes.
Oftentimes theyre brown, and they kiss in the corners like this.
But does any person have the exact same eyes as somebody else?
No.
Everybody's eyes are special, right?
No one in my family has eyes like me.
These kids as growing up, can go through some identity crisis.
I went through the same thing, and the fact that I can look at a fellow adoptee, and the fact that I look like them.. that really means a lot.
And then Coming here made me realize, it's not my problem and it's not my fault.
You can't change your identity, and you can't change where you're from.
It's not something you should have to change or feel ashamed of.
It's something you should embrace and be proud of.
When life gives you a house, move it.
