For the first time in Kentucky, a youth hockey team will compete in the North American championship.
The International all silver stick finals happen in Canada later this month.
And the Louisville Ice Cardinals want a spot to compete.
Our Kelsey Starks caught up with the team at the Iceland's sports complex in Louisville.
Every Tuesday and Thursday evening during hockey season.
And you'll find this Louisville ice rink full of sweaty, thirsty and compact titties, nine and ten year old hockey players.
Well, now get it out.
Now get inside.
But next week, they'll be hitting the ice in Canada.
It is the only tournament recognized by the NHL that if you do win the tournament up in Canada, you end up getting your name placed in the Hockey Hall of Fame for eternity.
Coach Neal Randall grew up playing hockey in Chicago.
When he moved to Kentucky, he brought his love of the game with hopes to help grow the youth hockey program here.
I played this tournament in 1994 and their 25th anniversary.
So 30 years ago to this day, I did the same thing up to Canada.
And it was, yeah, it's just such an awesome time.
It is.
It's truly the best of the best hockey players are going to be out there.
Were you.
Able to.
That includes his son.
Matt when he come on, man.
He came in the locker room.
And was, like, telling us about how fun it was.
And that, like, inspired us all to win it.
And that was basically the start of it.
Go, go, go.
Oh, my kid takes on the ice and scores, Max.
It's.
I definitely get the dad moment and smile and I try to not be.
But you still are.
So it's pretty great that obviously he's playing so and playing the sport that I love.
It's even better.
One goal win over a tough team out of Cleveland punched their ticket to the Silver Stick finals in Sarnia, Ontario, beginning January 17th.
I was freaking out.
Only won that game against the team we lost to in the first game.
So I was wanting to play them in the.
Championship really bad even when we lost.
I was freaking out when we beat them.
Now they are the first Kentucky team to ever make it to this prestigious tournament and they can't wait to hit the ice.
Just the experience.
I just want.
To.
I've never been there, so I just want to see how it is.
These kids are loving this and it's pushing them even harder to try and be better, to be able to compete up in Canada.
Just to speed.
Oh, not nasty.
Nasty.
It's very fun to watch, but it's hard.
What were doing like paying off?
Just fun to know we're going to Canada.
It's been like a dream.
It's a dream come true.
For Kentucky Edition, I'm Kelsey Starks.
Thanks, Kelsey.
The Louisville Cardinals compete in the Sarnia International Silver Stick finals January 17th through the 19th in Ontario, Canada.
Good luck to them.
