Where to Watch Contact
Contact is available to stream on pbs.org and the PBS app.
(upbeat music) - Discover the rich heritage and traditions of Oaxaca, Mexico at Oaxaca in Utah's seventh annual festival.
Mayah and Ben Carver join us now to share what you can expect at this free community event.
And Ben, I have one of the traditional foods that I'm holding right here, what is this?
- Yes, these are chapulines.
Chapulines are grasshoppers and they're flavored with some lime and spices.
How does it taste?
- [Liz] It's delicious.
I love it.
What else will people be able to participate in and enjoy at this year's festival?
- Participate and enjoy in, so you'll be able to enjoy the different artisan foods, you can see the different handcrafts and art culture that has done there.
- Yeah, you brought something here, one of the handcrafts.
It's gorgeous, this necklace.
And I was like, "This is something that people will be able to get there?"
- [Ben] Yes, with our vendors.
Uh-huh.
- Wow, that's, that's incredible.
What excites you about this year's festival?
- It excites me because we got to show all our culture, we got to show all the dances that we've been working on all year.
We're going to show our heritage, our cultural heritage, which will be very nice.
- I love that, and Ben, I hear that it's grown so much over the years that thousands of people attend.
- It has.
It's grown.
We went from a very small, about seven families to we expect, anywhere from about seven to 10,000 this year of attendees to come, and it's been wonderful to just have the public come and attend and celebrate this different culture that we bring instead of going down to Mexico.
- [Liz] And you talked about the dancing.
There's also music and all kinds of things.
And we have some photos on the screen as well.
What are you seeing there?
- So you see all the dresses from all the different regions with everyone from our group that have been helping for a very long time.
They help organize the Guelaguetza with all of the volunteers we have every year.
So we're very grateful for all of them and how much they're able to help us each year.
- Oh, I love that.
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing this.
I'm excited to check it out, and I know our viewers are probably excited as well and would love some more information about it.
You can check out the Oaxaca in Utah event at Heritage Park in Kayesville, July 25th from noon until 10:00 PM.
