Welcome to Sounds on 29th Live at the Skylark Lounge.
I am Stephan Brackett, your host.
I am so honored to be here with all these people who love the Colorado music scene.
Am I right?
[Cheering] We get to change the story of what people say and think about this city.
And I think this is a city of soul.
This is a city of jazz.
This is a city of R&B.
And we couldn't ask for a better heir apparent to this scene than in the incredible voice and writing of Lady Los.
[Cheering] I cannot wait until in the ascendancy of her career that she gets a whole new genre of R&B, maybe High Plains R&B.
I don't know, maybe Desert Soul, whatever.
It's yours to craft and create.
And so, with that, can you all give a warm Colorado welcome to Lady Los?

Point guard turned singer.
- That's me.
- Alright, in 29 seconds, tell me who the best point guard of all time is.
- Ooh, that's tough.
Of all time?
Um, people would argue that it's Steph, probably, but for me, it was always Steve Nash.
I felt like I found affinity in him watching him because I was undersized, even though I was the point guard.
I didn't have the longest arms I wasn't getting the fastest sprint times, but I was savvy, and I could handle the rock.
I knew how to shoot.
I knew how to make decisions.
So, he inspired me, and for him, for me, he is the greatest point guard.
- Alright, okay.
Alright, 29 seconds, then.
Best R&B singer?
- Ooh, that's tough.
Um, okay.
Again, for me, I'd just have to go with Sade.
Sade is, she's the best for me.
Her band is sick, just her vocal control.
Um, songs, like what they're about content, like just how they hit.

- Mmm.
Um, I'd say repetitions.
Repetitions, getting in there, practicing a lot, working on your vocals.
For me, what kinda got me back was that approach cause I was playing basketball a lot, I was teaching, coaching, so I was using my voice a lot, and I actually formed cysts in my vocal cords and was not able to sing, not really able to talk, and so getting those reps in is really, after I was cleared to sing again, to use my voice again, those reps are really what got me back because without my voice, like, it's not like without basketball.
Like, without my voice, it's almost like it's not me, you know?
- All right.
So, music's in your family, it's in your culture, it's all around you.
What about your pen game?
How did you discover that you were a writer as well?
- That was with the encouragement of my cousin Joshua mostly because I was really interested in what he was doing.
When I was younger, we were really close, kind of that sports and music connection came through strong for us, but he's considered-- He's 12 years older than me.
so I was able to look up to him and see things that he was doing and moving in a space in a way that I couldn't because I was a kid.
So, basically, he was, you know, approaching rap and different stuff at that time, and so I would kind of follow him around and notice like, "Oh, this is how he's writing.
This is what he's doing.” I would follow him around.
He had a friend that lived down the street and kind of had a basement recording studio, and we would go hang out there, and I would just see how they would flow.
And then, I would hear beats all day.
So, I'm hearing all these instrumentals, and I would, you know, try to do my own thing to it.
And it was stuff that they're older than me, so it wasn't stuff that they're like, "Oh, we got to do that right now,” you know?
But it gave me practice and it helped me get confident in like what I'm saying, how I wanted to say, hearing other people do it, and then being like, "Okay, this is how I want to do it.” Like, that's how they did it, and I'm learning from it, but then this is how I'm adapting it to where it's mine.

You know?
[Cheering] - When did you first know that you were good?
- I remember like just nerdy stuff.
I used to even love boy bands when I was a little kid.
So, we're all traveling around, listening to NSYNC, and Backstreet Boys, and stuff like that.
And yeah, I would just like sing along and sing.
And they'd be like, "Hold up, turn it down or like sing that again.” And so, then people would start to notice like, "Oh, you really could actually sing like the recording.” But that was because I was practicing trying to sound like the recording.
I just wasn't comfortable sharing it with people yet.
But when you're in a van, you know, driving somewhere to play in a tournament, and you're with all your friends, and everybody's belting it, you just sing too.
But then, somebody's like, "Oh, sing for me.” And then, you're like, "Oh, okay.
This is fun.
This is cool.” I was shy about it, but now I feel less shy about it.
- Who are the people that you like rock the stages with?
Who are the folks that you get together and share song ideas with?
- I work with this guy named Nelo.
Nelo, he goes by God Remember Nelo, but now just Nelo.
But he got named best in hip hop here in Denver.
And so, I've been working with him a lot.
We have a song that we put out.
There's another producer that's local.
His name is Mike Coates.
Mike Coates is somebody that I've been working with and been enjoying.
Another up and coming singer, her name is Brooklyn.
I've collaborated with her and enjoyed my time working with her.
Alex Blocker, he's an incredible violinist and also just solo songwriter, producer.
He makes his own tracks, plays violins, sings, raps, does it all.
So, just another person I admire.
DNA Picasso, he's another person who I met when I came onto the scene and has just embraced me and been cool with me.
And so, I've been able to make a song with him.
Vittorio.
Vittorio's another person.
So, I feel like I'm starting to kind of dive into-- It's the local scene.
It's here in Denver.
I mean, there are people that I've worked with outside of Denver, but it's nice to be able to connect with other artists who are doing similar things that I do, but also, they inspire me.

- Hey, thank you.
- What makes Denver special for you and like a great choice for you for your career as a musician?
- So, I was born and raised here, I grew up here.
My nana, she was a professor down at the Community College of Denver at Metro.
Her name was Yvonne Frye.
So, she's kinda who showed me what Denver's about and showed me the way.
And so, knowing the history of Denver and being black and Mexican, like knowing the black history of Denver so down at Five Points, you know, knowing about our jazz history, knowing about our soul singing history, and just for me, imagining like Lady Day, Lady Ella.
They were here.
They literally sang in Denver and had like touched down here.
Even though they're not from here, like, they graced us with their presence and their talents here.
And like if you think about energy and you think about how it like never goes away, like it still exists here.
So, that has been implanted here.
So, that's something that inspires me to know that that is here.
So, Denver is special, you know?
Having the mountain to the city connection is beautiful.
And so, just knowing the history of like Five Points, knowing this like mountain to city connection, and then, you know, just kinda soaking it all up, I feel like it's incredibly special and it's where I wanna be.
- Would 12 year old Lady Los think you were cool?
