Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipNear the capital city of Columbia, Lake Murray is a 50,000 acre reservoir with roughly 650 miles of sparkling shoreline Fed by the Saluda River, the lake serves as an essential power station providing 245 million kilowatts of hydroelectricity to the entire Midlands region each year.
The lake is named after South Carolina engineer William S Murray, who was responsible for the construction of the Saluda Dam to control the water supply and floods coming in from Lake Murray.
Additionally, the lake is also used for recreational purposes such as water sports and striped bass fishing.
In terms of wildlife, approximately 1 million Purple Martins call Lake Murray their home.
