It just looks better when everyone's bow is going in the same direction.
It sounds much more together and cohesive when everyone is doing the same motions at the same time.
So it really is about like sound and expression being together as a section.
So bowings are kind of like a constant part of my job.
It can take time.
I think the first piece I had to bow was Mahler five, and each part is about 40 pages long.
I want to say that took me like over an hour.
For each part, each conductor is going to have their own kind of interpretation of how they want a piece of music to sound.
The concertmaster collaborates with the conductor to get to know what style they're looking for, and then she will sit down and put the bowings in her part in a way that she hopes will kind of bring the conductor's vision to life.
