>>Where we tell the stories of music.
>>And we share the music of all people.
So what are we learning about today?
>>Well, today we are exploring.
We are exploring how music travels sometimes music travels high, and sometimes, it travels low.
So we are going on that traveling exploration today.
>>That sounds great.
And what else are we doing?
>>Well, we're also going to read this wonderful book Garcia and Colette Go Exploring.
And the two friends in that book, one travels high and one travels low.
>>That sounds great.
>>It is.
So let's get to it.
>>Let's do it.
>>[Children Voiceover] Let's learn about music.
>>Let's learn about music.
>>I love learning about music.
>>I do too.
Friends, in just a minute, I'm going to read the story about two friends who travel in opposite directions.
One likes to travel up.
And one likes to travel down.
And the first time I read the book, I thought, "Music can travel too."
Sometimes music travels high.
And sometimes it travels low.
>>Well, I love the sound of music traveling high.
I like the feeling of rising, like a rocket ship.
>>Ooh, blasting off from the ground.
Could you give us a musical example of that?
>>Sure.
Well, I have this line.
And this line shows something rising.
>>Traveling up.
>>And I have my rocket ship, >>Oh, a rocket ship, >>And I can sing this.
♪ Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum ♪ >>It rose off the ground, but now it's just hanging there.
And I like the feeling when music travels down.
So I'm going to answer this musical question with my own line and my submarine.
(chuckles) >>Can you start again?
♪ Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum ♪ ♪ Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum ♪ ♪ Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum ♪ That was the same.
I have to be different.
♪ Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum ♪ ♪ Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum ♪ ♪ Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum ♪ ♪ Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum ♪ ♪ Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum ♪ ♪ Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum ♪ ♪ Boom!
(Mike screams) ♪ >>What was that?
>>Well, I just felt like I had to be different.
Something needed a surprise.
>>I was very surprised.
>>Well, and friends, we have a surprise for you.
This melody that we've been singing, we didn't come up with this melody.
A man named Joseph Haydn composed this melody for one of his symphonies.
Can you say that word?
>>Symphonies.
He composed this melody over 200 years ago.
That's a long time.
And this melody is still very well known and cherished around the world.
>>What's the name of the symphony?
>>Well, get this.
It's called the surprise symphony.
>>The surprise symphony.
>>Yes, because of that musical surprise.
So enough of us singing this, we have to listen to the real thing.
So we're gonna get our lines ready.
We're going to have our rocket ship and our submarine.
Your job, musicians, is to use your ears.
Listen to this beautiful symphony and follow with your finger, the musical pathway as it rises and falls and get ready for that musical surprise.
All right.
So let's it get going.
>>Let's listen to our music.
>>You have a play button.
>>I do.
Are you Ready?
>>Ready.
>>Here we go.
(instrumental symphony) I love that surprise.
It's almost like Haydn was lulling his audience to sleep with that beautiful peaceful melody in the beginning and then boom!
Wake up.
>>Well, that was so much fun.
Can we do it one more time?
>>Absolutely.
Musicians, are you ready?
Are you able to read the pathway and follow it with your finger through the air?
Let's do it one more time.
And maybe this time we'll be more prepared for that musical surprise.
Maybe.
>>All right.
Well, here we go.
(instrumental symphony) >>Boom!
I think every instrument in the orchestra plays at that point.
And the drums, I love it.
Musicians, you have done such a wonderful job.
Part of learning about music and loving music is knowing how to listen and what we are listening to.
And today, you were able to follow the pathway of music as it rose off the ground up high, and then sank down low.
Nice job.
>>I love hiking in the mountains.
It's so beautiful, calm, quiet.
>>I love walking down here in the city.
I love the energy, the noises, even the traffic.
I love it all.
(instrumental symphony) >>What you thinking about?
>>Music.
>>Me too.
It's so great up here.
I really wish Mary was here to see it too.
>>I always have so much fun exploring the city.
I do wish Mike was with me.
>>[Children Voiceover] Let's move to music.
>>In just a minute, we're going to sit and listen to our story.
So before we do that, let's move our bodies a little bit to music because sometimes when you know that you're going to need to sit still and listen for a few minutes, it's good to move your body.
Get out a little bit of energy so that you can sit and focus and be a better listener.
Friends, are you ready?
Now, where does that first melody start?
Does it start up high in the sky or does it start down low on the ground?
Where does it start?
Do you remember?
It starts low on the ground.
Remember Mike's rocket ship?
So we start low on the ground and then we're gonna blast off up high.
So friends, listen to the music and do the motions with me.
Here we go.
(instrumental symphony) Are you surprised?
Float these hands.
But here comes the pathway, up and down.
No music.
Bounce your hands.
Here comes our last phrase.
Up and down.
Nice job, friends.
Did you get a good stretch up, and a good stretch down?
And did you get the surprise?
I love it.
It gets me every time.
Well, friends now we've exercised our bodies.
We're feeling good.
And now it's time to sit and listen to our story.
>>[Children Voiceover] Let's read a book.
>>Let's read the book, Garcia and Colette Go Exploring by Hannah Barnaby.

This book is about two friends who have a disagreement.
That means they don't agree on something.
One wants to go exploring this way.
And one wants to go exploring the other way, the opposite direction.
So they end up going opposite directions and discovering wonderful, beautiful things.
But they realize, "I'm lonely without my friend."
So when we read the book, we're going to find out how they solve their disagreement and come up with a compromise.
I love this book and I hope you will too.
Garcia and Colette Go Exploring by Hannah Barnaby, pictures by Andrew Joyner.
Garcia and Colette were having a disagreement.
"Space!"
said, Garcia.
"Sea!"
said Colette.
"Stars!"
said Garcia.
"Sand!"
said Colette.
There was only one thing to do.
"I will build a rocket," said Garcia "I will build a submarine," said Colette.
And at the same time they said, "I will "go "exploring."
They gathered their materials and got to work.
I love looking at the materials they gathered to build their rocket and their submarine.
I see a trumpet, some scissors, a keyboard, a bicycle.
I can't wait to see how they use these materials to build their rocket and their submarine.
Garcia's rocket was snazzy and silver, made of metal and bolts with a round window on the side.
Colette's submarine was gold and glorious made of metal and bolts with a square window in the front.
"Nice work."
Garcia said.
"You too."
Colette replied.
They prepared for their journeys.
Garcia packed 14 peanut butter sandwiches, a notebook, a pen and his lucky hat.
Colette packed, 15 peanut butter sandwiches, a notebook, a pen, and her lucky socks.
14 and 15 peanut butter sandwiches?
That's a lot of peanut butter sandwiches.
What would you pack to go exploring?
They were ready to go.
"Bon voyage," called Colette, as she climbed down her hatch.
"Buenas suerte," shouted Garcia as he climbed up his ladder.
They waved to each other through their windows.
The countdown began.
Ten.
Nine.
Eight.
Seven.
Six.
Five.
Four.
Three.
Two.
One.
Zero.
Blast off.
Colette watched Garcia's rocket lift quickly into the sky.
"Showy," she thought.
But the blue flames trailing behind it were quite beautiful.
Look at those blue flames.
Love it.
Garcia watched Colette's submarine glide quietly under the water.
"So slow," he thought.
But the sun shining on the gold paint was mesmerizing.
Look at how that sparkles in the sunshine.
Garcia's rocket climbed up, up, up.
The sunlight thinned and disappeared until the air was like ink all around him.
He took out his notebook.
"Space is dark," he wrote.
Colette's submarine sank down, down, down.
The water turned from blue to navy to black.
She took out her notebook.
"The sea is dark," she wrote.
Garcia passed the moon.
He looked out his round window and observed stars, and meteors, and many glowing things.
"Space is beautiful," he wrote.
Colette floated over a coral reef.
She looked out her square window and noticed exotic fish and other creatures, glowing like lanterns.
"The sea is beautiful," she wrote.
Garcia ate a peanut butter sandwich.
All he could hear was the sound of his own chewing.
(makes chewy sound) And then the scratching of his pen as he wrote, "Space "is quiet."
Colette ate two peanut butter sandwiches.
She hummed a little eating song (hums tone) as she often did.
But her voice sounded louder than usual.
"The sea is quiet," she wrote in her notebook.
Garcia began to wish he had made his rocket a bit bigger inside.
He wanted to put on his lucky hat but he couldn't take off his space helmet.
He wanted to count the stars, but up close, they were too bright to look at.
"Space is lonely," Garcia wrote.
Colette couldn't get comfortable.
She wanted to put on her lucky socks but she couldn't reach her feet.
She wanted to put her toes in the sand but she couldn't open the hatch underwater.
"The sea is lonely," Colette wrote.
Garcia took one last look at space then he turned his rocket around and started back down.
Colette took one last look at the sea, then she turned her submarine around and started back up.
Garcia's rocket splashed down just as Colette's submarine popped up.
They waved to each other through their windows.
Colette towed Garcia back to shore.
"The sea was great," she told him, "but too much water."
"Space was awesome," Garcia said, "but not enough air."
"I have an idea," said Colette.
Where did they go?
It was nighttime when they arrived.
There was sand beneath their feet.
There were stars above their heads.
There was darkness and quiet all around them.
"Desert," they said together.
Did you see what they did to their submarine and their rocket?
Did they combine it together to make one exploring machine to take them somewhere that they both enjoyed and wanted to explore?
I love it.
And they were not lonely.
Not one little bit.
I love how this story shows us how two friends start with a disagreement.
But after going their separate ways, realizing that they could come to a compromise and find a place that they both liked.
Did you notice how in the book that Garcia is up in space and he's seeing beautiful things.
There's dark all around.
There's stars.
It's quiet.
Meanwhile, Colette is under the sea and she's seeing beautiful things too.
But it's also dark, quiet, and beautiful.
But they were both lonely in those places without the other one.
So instead of insisting, "No we're gonna do it my way.
"We're going to space."
Or Colette saying, "No, we're doing it my way.
"We're going under water."
They realized they had some things in common.
They liked the darkness and the quiet, the stars above, the sand under your toes.
And they found a place that they could go and both love to explore.
Friends, I hope that this book inspires you if you're having a disagreement with a friend, you could both go your separate ways and that's fine and wonderful and go explore different things.
But it might also be worth your time to see if there's a compromise to find the things that you have in common and then go together so that neither one of you is lonely.
>>[Children Voiceover] You are a beautiful learner.
>>We have learned so much today.
>>I had so much fun.
>>I did too.
We went exploring in our rocket ship and our submarine to find out how music can travel high and how it can travel low.
>>And I loved listening to the surprise symphony.
>>Oh boy, the surprise symphony.
It gets me every time.
And of course, the wonderful book showing us how two friends found that compromise in the desert where they both had things that they loved.
You could look at the stars but you could also wiggle your toes in the sand.
So friends, we have learned a lot of new things and remember what we always say about learning new things.
Repeat after us.
I am brave.
>>I am curious.
>>I am strong because I can do hard things.
>>I am a beautiful learner.
Yes, you are, friends.
And we will see you next time.
