Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(mellow music) - "Forget Me Nots" is my take on kind of paying homage to the past, paying homage to experiences, people, places, conversations that you may have throughout life, bringing that to the forefront and making sure that you don't take things for granted or overlook the small details.
Currently I'm working in photography, videography, I'm working with film, just got into sculpture, doing the wheat past thing, using posters as a form of communication.
Photography is my favorite.
Just because you can take it, you can duplicate it, you can print it.
It's more of tangible medium.
The power of photography is just, I don't know, it's breathtaking.
I think it's just that you can kind of step back and just stare at it.
I think when you can just sit in stillness and think about it, it just, I don't know, it just opens up my mind.
Overall, it's about community and it's about me not just thinking about the problems that I have, but the problems we face as a whole, finding ways to tell those stories in visually a pleasing way.
Think things are connected, just because one thing is maybe about race and that doesn't mean is not connected to economic power and to economic struggle of a certain class.
And so I try to bring out that in my work.
And I try to also paint stories of triumph.
It's not necessarily all about a struggle, but it's about how we persevere through all of these things.
(mellow music) The concrete sculpture is the most recent.
I've been working with concrete most of my life.
That was my dad's business so that was my first job.
And I wanted to find ways to use the concrete to tell stories.
The majority of the inspiration, I think, came from my father and me just trying to figure out how can I use this skill, this trade, in my practice.
How can I continue the legacy?
And I think legacy was the word that just stuck in my head.
Like, how can I pass this down to my son?
It's been surreal.
Yeah, the feeling from the community and hearing them talk about it, seeing the stories on social media.
That's when I really started to feel it, and that's when I knew, okay, I might be really making an impact out here.
But I'm hoping that everyone can come see it.
It's up through May 1st at the Frist Art Museum.
And I hope to see you here.
And yeah, that's Forget Me Nots.
