The colonies were divided into three groups: the New England colonies, the middle colonies, and the southern colonies.
In New England, fishing and trade dominated the economy.
The middle colonies were known as the breadbasket of British North America, while southern colonies focused on plantation agriculture and the use of slave labor to cultivate cash crops.
The majority of colonists were English settlers.
Yet a variety of ethnicities, including African, Dutch, Swedish, Scotch-Irish, and German were scattered throughout the regions.
There was also a variety of religious faiths, including numerous Protestant groups, Catholics, Jews, and Muslims.
The 13 colonies' schism from Great Britain created the foundation for a new nation.
