This manuscript is the earliest illustrated version of the text, completed in 1594 to 1595, written at the order of the Mamluk sultan Al-Mansur Ala' ad-Din Ali.
Several paintings have been identified as the work of the master known as Hasan.
The manuscript begins with the story of the Prophet Muhammad's night journey to heaven, Mi'raj, mounted on a winged steed named Burraq and escorted by angels.
For most Muslims, the depiction of Muhammad is prohibited.
His face has, according to tradition, been whitened out.
This manuscript of the life of the prophet is a masterpiece of classical Ottoman illumination.
