We get a chance to meet some wonderful people.
And one such person was Mr. Gene Parkhill.
And I've got his beautiful wife here with us and his daughter and just the whole family.
But I tell you what, I had a chance to meet your dad, your husband and I fell in love with him, because he was such a genuine guy.
When I first heard about he was coming and first time he came on the show, I said he's really sincere about what he was doing.
And he was that, got a chance to be at his home-going service.
And it was something I just, was just led to be there.
- And we greatly appreciated that.
That meant the world to us.
- Yeah, well, it meant a lot to me.
And I feel that right now.
So on "Alabama Gospel Roots," we wanted to present something, but first I want you to just say how you felt about Brother Gene.
Mom, would you just tell us?
I know if you can, as best as you can.
You know more about him than we all do.
So don't tell it all now.
Go right ahead.
- Yeah, we was together almost 41 years.
We never separated or you know, anything, but you know, yeah, he was a good man.
He was a hard worker and I loved him.
And you know, I miss him.
- I know you do.
- But you know, but the help and grace of God, you know, I'm gonna make it.
- Yeah, you still hear him talking now though?
- Oh, yeah.
At times.
- Well, anything particularly that you can remember he would say all the time?
Any particular phrase?
- He would just holler at me a lot.
He would just holler, holler, "Ava, Ava."
Say, I can still hear that sometimes.
- But he would always ask her, "Is the food ready yet?"
- All right, all right, all right.
- Oh yeah, he loved to eat, that's for sure.
- Every time I saw a picture, looked like y'all were eating somewhere.
- We were, yeah.
- And Sarah as a daughter, now are you the only child?
- Well, I'm the youngest.
- The youngest, I got you.
- Yeah, so my sister was like 12 years older than me, so yeah.
- Okay.
- So I was the only one at home.
- So did he encourage you to sing or you just picked it?
- That is where I started singing.
- Wow.
- I was probably eight years old and started singing with him in church.
And you know, I really didn't wanna sing- - Uh-huh.
- Because I felt like I couldn't sing.
- Right.
- But that really instilled the want to, to sing and the gospel music in me.
And by the time I was say 12, I was really wanting to sing.
I had that love for it and said, "That's what I want to do."
So I have to thank Dad for that.
- [George] Right.
- In church.
- Right, oh, you know what I can't understand is why when the first time we got in touch with you by way of Dennis Williams, I believe, and I don't know why you didn't tell me, "My dad sings too."
It was kind of like in the process.
- I'm sorry, he came to bring me to one of the singings and he actually met you.
And that's how that happened.
- [George] Wow.
- I was like, "My dad sings too," so.
- [George] Wow, wow.
- I think that was the second taping.
- Now, he was one of the most sincere ministers of gospel that I met on all of these years.
I mean, it wasn't about the showtime, it was just I love what I'm doing, you know?
- That's true, he loved it.
He loved "Gospel Roots."
He loved you.
- Oh, he told me the last time I said, what were you up in Athens?
I believe it was.
- Yes.
- He told me, he said, "You don't believe how popular this show is."
He said- - That's true.
- "I have my wife called everybody on Saturday."
He had you on a mission, right?
- Yes.
- Call everybody.
He said, he kept telling me, "You don't know how popular this show is."
It's a and it just, it touched me.
And I think that was one of the things that really, really locked it in.
- Yeah.
- And we're gonna always miss him and always appreciate him.
- Absolutely.
- Okay, well we got brother on the end and who we got down there?
Get that mic up for me.
- That's my better half, my wife.
- [George] Your wife.
- She'll be the sister-in-Law to Gene.
- I got you.
Well, tell me, you, you guys grew up, and did y'all play when y'all were growing up?
- We played when we grew up.
My mother's side of the family, all of her brothers played music and it just came down generation to us and home to the other children.
- [George] That is awesome.
So do you have children who sing?
- Yes, I've got one.
- [George] Okay, play as well?
- No, she don't play, but my granddaughter does.
She plays the violin.
- [George] Oh, that's- - School band.
- All right, well, sister-in-law.
You wanna say something about your dear brother?
- My brother-in-law, he was extremely ordinary person.
He would always say, "Cindy, ask Larry, where are we gonna go eat next?"
- [Sarah] That's right.
- But I used to ride to church with them and we really miss him a lot.
He was a good man, - Linwood, you came into a family that was already locked in, man.
How did you make your way to getting Brother Gene to open the door for you?
- I bribed him.
- [George] You bribed him, I got you.
Well, you took him to eat somewhere?
- That's right, I think since when he met him was eating out somewhere.
- He likes the steakhouse.
- Yeah, he does.
- Yeah, I'd always ask him, "Any good places to eat up there?"
You know, he was telling me about the places I got and when I came up to the service, I got a chance to see some of the places he was talking about.
Great, great.
So what do you remember most about him other than the eating?
- He loved, he loved music, he loved to sing.
He loved all kinds of gospel music.
- [George] Yes sir.
- He's old fashioned like I was, you know.
And we kinda grew up on the old Southern.
- [George] Yeah.
- Gospel music and he enjoyed that.
The guitar that Larry's gonna be playing on tonight is the guitar that was Gene's.
- [George] Okay.
- The last one he played on this show.
- [George] Wow.
- So he'll be playing that with, say on a song for dad.
- Great, great, Sarah, I know it's a big hole that's left.
- Absolutely, yeah.
- But you're going to continue to carry the banner on and we gonna make sure that, ain't no give up, ain't no stopping.
