Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- [Troy Rogers] Some people come out early in the morning, fishing... for fish.
And I'm fishing for sounds.
There are a lot of unique and interesting sounds that happen when ice is forming.
When ice is moving.
When it's breaking up.
My name is Troy Rogers and we are at the edge of Lake superior.
We're going through a period right now of where during the day the temperatures are above freezing by about 10:00 AM.
The air temp will be above freezing and overnight it's been freezing.
And so overnight the ice expands and as the sun comes up what I heard yesterday morning was a kind of hum that permeates in these kind of chirps that travel through the ice.
Those are interesting sounds that anybody's who's spent time around a frozen lake is familiar with.
But to try to capture them they're very transitory.
