Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship[Music] when johnny was seven and he was an unusual talent he uh he could do 15 chins chin ups you know he could do 40 push-ups he was fast for a kid and he could catch a ball with the lsu football players and when they're going to the dining hall would uh throw passes to him and he could catch a pass running full speed 40 yards away and never miss one i was about 10 or 12 i guess and i saw this uh boy playing tackle football with a cast on his leg and i said how tough can this kid be and then somebody said well that's that's johnny robinson what jimmy field long time close friend and teammate of johnny robinson saw that day was what millions of football fans would come to know as they watched robinson's football career flourish at lsu and then for the kansas city chiefs playing hurt and with a commanding presence was part of the robinson mystique this all pro all everything played in super bowl iv a 23-7 upset of the minnesota vikings with three broken ribs he helped seal the victory by intercepting a pass johnny robinson was born september 9 1938 in delhi louisiana the son of dub and jewell robinson the family would soon move to baton rouge where his dad would become the long time legendary lsu tennis coach and where johnny and his older brother tommy would achieve their own athletic successes in tennis and for johnny in any sport he played for tommy who watched his younger brother by 14 months grow up he always knew he was destined for athletic greatness his whole life was built around sports you know in in high school he it was all state and football he averaged 30 points a game in basketball he played on the state championship baseball team as a catcher went to the semifinals batted 500 in baseball that was supposedly his best sport won the state championship in tennis and was second in the hundred yard dash favorite story about johnny's attitude and what he brought to the game actually occurred when i was a sophomore and he was a senior and he was captain he said i feel you're the only sophomore we're going to see what you can do so the next night we go up to zachary johnny and i have the deep backs for the kickoff well of course they kick it to me instead of johnny and it opened up and i ran 89 yards for a touchdown he came up to me in the end zone patted me on the butt and he said i think he's going to make it field says from that time on they were special friends he didn't have a younger brother i didn't have a big brother so i think we just bonded and and i still he helped me at lsu he mentored me there because he was the first university high graduate to get a football scholarship at a division one school robinson starred on the great tiger teams of 1958 and 59 and won an sec singles title in tennis in 1958 he entered the pro football hall of fame in 2019. stuart smokey stover bonded with robinson when the two played ball in kansas city he was a heck of a player i mean he was always in the mix somehow he was he was there he was uh very very conscientious about what how he did it and when he did it you know he was a super guy not only a person but a good acid lead robinson was a 10 time all-pro and the chiefs won an astounding 35 of 37 games in which robinson intercepted a pass he had 57 interceptions in his pro career when he founded johnny robinson's boy's home in monroe in 1980 he began intercepting the problems of troubled youth and steering them toward a better path in life for the past 40 years he's done everything in his power to help keep them safe not even debilitating illnesses over the last several years have kept him from his true life's work he's one of the greatest athletes to ever come out of louisiana or anywhere coach diesel told me one time had billy not been there he thought johnny would have won the heisman trophy what he's done with his life post football he's a servant it's a 24 hour day job with at home and touched the lives of so many that that needed to know they were loved by somebody and somebody to call dad he has a courage and a strength whatever he does it's something special [Music] you
