I thought there's something in this guy's voice that's singular.
They're not gonna say you sound like anybody.
You're part of a soundtrack of this place.
And one of the values of the show is that, well, I'll back up a notch.
A friend of mine had been editor of Billboard Magazine, which you know is the big trade magazine.
- Oh yeah.
- Forever and ever.
He's deceased now.
Old country drummer.
But we were really close buddies and one day he told me over coffee, he said, "You know, Eric, somebody in every state needs to rake all the talent to the middle 'cause there's no way people in the rest of the country are gonna know what's going on.
- Right.
- Well that was synchronous with a friend of mine talking very deeply, and we've continued this conversation for a long time now, about when you're in Europe and you travel from Poland to Hungary to the Czech Republic to Germany, you're changing language, you're changing architecture, you're changing culture, you're changing music and art.
We've gotten to the point in the United States now where almost the United Countries of America and there is a Montana sound.
- Yeah.
- And even within your genre or sub-genre- - A Montana sound with within each genre.
- Exactly.
- Yeah.
- And so, you know, we've raked this stuff together.
We've got everything from jazz to classical to the country to rock to zydeco, blah, blah, blah.
But there's a unique quality to it.
And I think you have a big fingerprint on that because I had trouble when somebody said, "Well, how would you describe Luke Dowler?"
Said, I can't tell you.
I can give you words that are gonna mean something, but they're gonna minimize exactly what it is he did Because it's such an amalgamation of things.
- Well, and that's also, that's part of the commercial tension, the music business, right, part, the business part of it is, you know, how do you brand, which, because how do you communicate before somebody listens?
How do you communicate to interest them in listening?
And at the end of the day, I guess I've always considered myself, or at least aspired to be a songwriter.
And for me, that has meant song is the banner that I'm under.
Song is for lack, king.
Song is king, so to speak.
So style, you know, style is part of what you dress a song up in.
And if it's a good song, you might be able to deliver it in a number of different ways.
- Well said.
- You know, I've been in search of it, I've been in search of a good song.
You can be inspired.
I have been inspired by a wide range and it, because I think maybe it's been a personal journey as a songwriter too, not a commercial one.
The commercial has always been secondary.
And that's a tension that I think I'll always walk.
I've recorded in, you know, studios.
I've recorded in Nashville, recorded in LA, recorded in New York, all those places.
But I kind of wanted to do something that was uniquely part of where I am.
And I planted my flag here in Northwest Montana and was like, I'm gonna do it from here no matter, like this is where I'm gonna do it from.

The songs that you write are personal and there's almost a secret quality to them.
I mean, it is really like you're sharing something very personal.
It kind of brings up the story.
Okay, you've got new people coming to town, you've got people who can bring in bigger names, but I don't know if they can bring in an equal, you know?
In other words, I think you've got a brand that you can capitalize and you probably know that and have been doing it for a while, but- - I definitely have a little bit of a soapbox when it comes to Montana, when it comes to music, because I wholeheartedly have planted myself in Montana.
I mean, I was born here.
Traveled all over the country, being the son of a Marine, was born here, moved away before I was even one, I think.
So didn't know it, came back, planted myself here and have always had a little bit of a frustration, a love, it's a love/hate thing where Montana kind of been like, hey, if we don't get behind some of the things that are going on and artistically, if we don't support, if we don't create levels to get up, no doubt, why wouldn't people say like, I gotta get outta here.
I gotta get to Nashville, I gotta get to LA, I gotta get to New York.
I gotta get somewhere else because there's nothing here for me.
And so there's always been like a... And so you have the out, you know, the outflux, if that's even a word.
You have the outflux of art.
But then you also have the influx of people from other places deciding for you because they come in and they say, "Okay, well we're gonna do things now."
You know, and there's a tension even in, you know, even in Whitefish, it's a tension.
We'll see where it goes.
There's been a lot of great music, a lot of great things that are happening, but at the same time, some of the locals are also going like, maybe we don't want the bedazzled jeans and the, you know, just bought the cowboy hat.
Like, you know who out there actually owns a cow?
I do actually.
I do own a cow.
(both laughing) But you know, that sort of, it's an experience.
And so with that experience comes, okay, well, now you're kind of outnumbered.
I mean we live in Montana 'cause we love the lifestyle and sometimes some of the arts can be background.
Like, hey, that's cool, that's cool, good for you.
Back to loving life here.
And that that tension is one that I think we're gonna, we'll see where it goes.
You know, we're all kind of living it and it's not a bad thing, it's just a thing.
That's what I see happening and I've always been one to say like, let's give artists, let's give musicians, you know, filmmakers, whatever the may be the case, let's give them support.
Let's give opportunities to grow.
