TUCKED INSIDE A NON-DESCRIPT BUILDING OFF DIXIE DIXIE HIGHWAY IN LOUISVILLE'S SHIVELY NEIGHBORHOOD IS LITTLE BROWNIE BAKERS, A BUSTLING OPERATION THAT DISTRIBUTES 6 MILLION COOKIES A DAY DURING ITS PEAK GIRL SCOUT SEASON.
ITS STORY BEGAN IN 1954 WHEN A MAN NAMED ROBERT DENHAM OPENED A PLACE WITH COOKIE IT BECAME THE BARBARA D. COOKIE COMPANY.
THE DEAL WAS DONE IN 1973 AND THEY BECAME LITTLE BROWNIE BAKERS.
A LICENSED GIRL SCOUT COOKIE BAKER.
Mr. DENHAM CONTINUED TO INVEST IN THE LOUISVILLE COMMUNITY BUILDING GIRL SCOUT BRIDE IN HIS BAKERY, A TRADITION THAT CONTINUES TODAY.

IT WAS FUN AND EVERYBODY LIKES GIRL SCOUT COOKIES.

GIRL SCOUTS, WE THINK OF ADVENTURE AT CAMP BUT THEY DO A LOT OF TRAVEL.
AS GIRLS GET OLDER, THEY'RE EXCITED ABOUT EARNING THEIR COOKIE MONEY AND TURNING IT INTO TRAVEL EXPERIENCES SO LOTS OF GIRLS GO TO SAVANNAH, THE BIRTHPLACE OF JULIETTE GORDON LOWE AND SOME GIRLS PURSUE INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES.
THERE ARE OTHER GIRL SCOUT LOCATIONS ACROSS THE WORLD THAT PEOPLE VISIT IN THE SWISS ALPS AND MEXICO AND LONDON, ALL SORTS OF PLACES.
AND SO GIRL SCOUTS GIVE GIRS OPPORTUNITIES THEY MAY NOT HAVE AND THE COOKIES ARE POWERING THE FUN.

BUT THEN THAT'S THE INFRASTRUCTURE.
THE FOUNDATION, 50 STAFF SUPPORTING 4,000 VOLUNTEERS AND 9,000 GIRLS.
THAT'S HOW THAT EQUATES.
AND THEN BEYOND THAT, IT ALSO POWERS THE FUNDS FOR THE TROUPES SO THE TROUPES HAVE PROCEEDS AS WELL.
THEY EARN MONEY, THE MONEY COMES BACK TO THE COUNCIL AND WE BUY THE COOKIES AND THE PROGRAM HAS COSTS LIKE ANY FUNDRAISING PROGRAM WOULD.

ONCE GIRLS JOIN GIRL SCOUTS, THEY EARN ENOUGH MONEY THEY DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING ELSE.
THEY'RE ABLE TO PAY FOR ALL THE FUN THAT THEY HAVE AND IT COULD BE THINGS LIKE GOING TO THE U OF L WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GAME OR A BIG FESTIVAL WE HAVE IN THE FALL FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS, MAYBE A CAMPING TRIP, A TRIP SOMEWHERE OUT OF STATE.
IT COULD BE ANY OF THOSE THINGS BUT THE TROOPS ARE REALLY DIRECTING WHAT THEY WANT TO DO.
GIRL SCOUTS OF KENTUCKIANA PROVIDES PROGRAMMING THAT THEY CAN OPT INTO AND THERE ARE SMALL COSTS AROUND THAT THAT THEY USE THEIR COOKIE MONEY FOR AS WELL.

BOTH MY ORGANIZATION AS WELL AS THE OTHER SCOUTING ORGANIZATION RELY ON VOLUNTEERS TO DO OUR PROGRAMMING AND YOU KNOW, THERE IS JUST NOT ENOUGH SPOTS, NOT ENOUGH OPPORTUNITY.
WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE OPPORTUNITIES.
SO, YOU KNOW, I DON'T SEE IT HAVING A DRAMATIC IMPACT.
OUR UNIQUE VALUE IS THAT WE ARE ALL ABOUT GIRLS.
THE EXPERTS ON GIRLS AND THEY CAN'T SAY THAT ABOUT-- AND THAT'S NOT WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO BE BUT THAT'S WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE WANT TO BE.
