Welcome to Basin PBS, your Anwar Family Studio.
We are so happy to be here tonight.
I would like to introduce the next song for you, but first a brief history of the song that I just performed.
It's called "Old Abe."
And I wrote the song, I co-wrote it with some friends in Nashville, and it's about an eagle who was carried through the Civil War battle.
And it's really cool because, well, it's not cool, 'cause a lot of people died in the Civil War, but the interesting thing about the eagle is that, no matter where it was going and who was carrying it, the eagle itself never fell.
And it became a symbol of hope for the men that were fighting.
And so that is what "Old Abe" is about.
They actually called the eagle Old Abe.
So that's just a little tidbit about that song.
And now I'd like to share the next song with you.
This is called "Angels on the Ground."
This is a song that I co-wrote with a couple of really good friends.
One is named Carolyn Wilson.
I just wanna give a shout out to Carolyn Rose Wilson in Nashville and also Jamie Lee Wyatt.
They wrote this song with me and we just had a great time, again honoring the people that fought and died to help establish our country.
And so that's what this song is about, is those fallen soldiers, and just simply honoring them and what they've done.
("Angels on the Ground" by Erica Lane et al.)
♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ I've been wounded left for dead ♪ ♪ The thought of war has gone to my head ♪ ♪ In the chill of the night the wolf's at the door ♪ ♪ And I can't hold 'em back no more ♪ ♪ Here they come to take me away ♪ ♪ Take me to my fate ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Fields of red skies of gray ♪ ♪ I'm gonna meet my Lord today ♪ ♪ Caught in the crossfire there he lies ♪ ♪ One young soldier's desperate cry ♪ ♪ Out of the trench as bullets fly ♪ ♪ One last chance to save a life ♪ ♪ Not gonna let another one die tonight ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ The widows weren't the only ones weeping ♪ ♪ If angels ♪ ♪ Tell my mama I'm a sleeping ♪ ♪ Angel ♪ ♪ Don't you worry I'm safe and sound ♪ ♪ Angel ♪ ♪ I'm an angel on the ground ♪ ♪ Angel ♪ ♪ Oo ♪ ♪ Oo ♪ ♪ Oo ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ ♪ Angels on the ground ♪ All right, thank y'all for watching today.
And the next song that I'd like to share with you is called "River Road."
And I was driving along, literally, on something called River Road many years ago when this song popped into my mind.
I thought about the rivers across our nation, and how many rivers that cities have risen and fallen, how many rivers have seen battles right next to their shores, just tremendous things have happened where rivers are.
And so I thought, you know what, not if walls could talk, but if rivers could talk, what would it say about the history of our nation?
So that's what this song is about.
It's called "River Road."
("River Road" by Erica Lane) ♪ River Road ♪ ♪ They call me so ♪ ♪ My legacy's routed and written in stone ♪ ♪ My waters are stained ♪ ♪ With soldiers' blood ♪ ♪ My shores have beheld true love ♪ ♪ And I stand with my mother America ♪ ♪ With her children I'll fight for her honor ♪ ♪ And as I live and die ♪ ♪ Even when I run dry ♪ ♪ My story will still be told ♪ ♪ I'm River Road ♪ ♪ Oo ♪ ♪ Oo ♪ ♪ Age to age ♪ ♪ And high to low ♪ ♪ From the Rio Grande to the Shenandoah ♪ ♪ God's light shone in the prairie sun ♪ ♪ Where brother fought brother ♪ ♪ And freedom won ♪ ♪ And I stand with my mother America ♪ ♪ With her children I will fight for her honor ♪ ♪ And as they live and die ♪ ♪ Even if I run dry ♪ ♪ Her story will still be told ♪ ♪ I'm River Road ♪ ♪ Oo ♪ ♪ Oo ♪ ♪ Oo ♪ ♪ Harvest plains ♪ ♪ And desert ground ♪ ♪ Snow-capped country ♪ ♪ Field and town ♪ ♪ The city glow ♪ ♪ The coastal dawn ♪ ♪ This land of promise shines on ♪ ♪ And I stand with my mother America ♪ ♪ With her children I'll fight for her honor ♪ ♪ And as they live and die ♪ ♪ Even if I run dry ♪ ♪ Her story will still be told ♪ ♪ Now I stand with my mother America ♪ ♪ With her children I'll fight for her honor ♪ ♪ And as they live and die ♪ ♪ Even if I run dry ♪ ♪ Her story will still be told ♪ ♪ I'm River Road ♪ ♪ I'm River Road ♪ ♪ Oo ♪ ♪ Oo ♪ (no audio) - So the next song is one of my favorites.

He is doing guitar, and he's a wonderful vocalist on top of that.
And he is gonna start out the next song.

Just in case you didn't pick up on it, a lot of these songs are patriotic themed, and I just want to celebrate the fact that we live in a free country, and we can stand here and play music that we love and just hang out together.
So with that being said, I'd like to introduce the next song and this is called "Ballad of Sergeant Hack."
And the reason I call it "Ballad of Sergeant Hack" is because I met this man, his name is David Hack, and he is literally a war hero, and just went through some horrific experiences in the Vietnam War.
Came out alive, miraculously, to tell his story.
And there's a book about him.
To this day, he is alive and well.
He even owns a company up in Ohio called U.S. Wings.
It's a military apparel company.
So I've stayed in touch with him over the years, and we created this song a while back, and it's called "Ballad of Sergeant Hack," because I'm trying to fit his entire life into a song.
So if you can catch any tidbits, please try to, because there's a lot of fascinating info of his bio packed in there.
Hope you enjoy.

It's called "Burden," and the story was built around someone's real life story.
I had a friend years ago that her firstborn son started to have some pain in his leg, and it started to progress to the point that they found he had sarcoma and he was battling cancer.
And sadly, all the treatments that they went through, it wasn't really helping, and it got to the point where her son eventually passed away at the age of 12.
And her being a good friend of mine, watching the heartbreak that she went through, and not knowing what it would be like to be a mother going through that, it just really, really resonated with me that, in those deepest, darkest times when somebody is just going through the worst, that's when friendship matters.
And we've gotta step up and be there for those that need us.
And so what this song is really about is someone who's going through that burden, carrying their burden, going through it with them.
It may not solve their problem, but we can be there.
That's what this song is about.
Hope you enjoy it.

I didn't write this, Rolling Stones did, but I love this song.
And although it doesn't exactly pertain to my relationship with my husband, this song is kind of about like a strained relationship.
- There you go.
- So have you gone through a strained relationship before?
- Never.

- Yes.
- Okay, you're lucky.

- Okay, but was it ever at the point where you like you didn't care 'cause you liked that person so much you just like kind of rode through it and got beat up and, but you were just, you were willing to.
- Yes, it's out there now.
- Yeah.
I feel like that's what this song is about, is like kind of riding through being mistreated, but you love that person so much, you just put up with it.
It's kind of not fair and it's not right.
But you know, I'm gonna ask you.
Have you been through that too?
(chuckling lightly) Yeah.
Sergio's been through that too, so me too, me too.
I can't imagine somebody that hasn't gone through this.
Anyway, back to my husband, which this doesn't pertain to.
The reason I would like to dedicate it to my husband, Clifton Garza, is because of the lyric that says, "Wild horses couldn't drag me away."
And my goodness, we've been through some tough things together, he and I, as many relationships have been through different dynamics, we've been through some tough things.
