We are so delighted to have been asked to do this by Basin PBS.
We are Eric and Emily Baker and we perform together a lot.
And I wanted to tell you just a little bit about our lives as musicians.
Neither one of us was born in Texas.
I was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
- I was born in South Carolina.
- And as the old saying goes, we weren't born here, but we got here as fast as we could.
We were both raised by pastors and also by musicians.
- That's right.
All of our family, parents and extended family are musicians.
And so that was a big part of our life growing up.
And of course being raised in churches, we were participating in choir and worship.
And then also hearing that every Sunday.
- Yeah, I was actually playing keyboards and singing on the worship team at age 10.
That's what happens when you go to a very small church.
And I'm personally, for many reasons, very grateful that social media, Facebook live in particular and live streaming did not exist back then 'cause I'm sure those would be some really interesting videos.
- I'm sure we were saved a lot of embarrassment by coming of age after social media.
- Absolutely.
So we grew up doing music with our families.
And then we met in college at the University of Texas at Arlington where we were both music majors.
I was a voice major and Eric actually was a trumpet major.
You're not gonna get to hear that tonight.
He's one of those people who's kind of good at everything.
So he doesn't agree with me.
- There's plenty that I'm not good at.
But yeah, I played trumpet.
And actually we had a fun experience in high school.
We actually got to perform on the same stage before we ever actually officially had known each other.
Every year in Texas for Allstate.
Emily is a two year Allstate choir member.
I only made Allstate one year, a fact- - I try not to rub it in.
- A fact she absolutely reminds me of.
- I rub it in all the time.
- And every year at TMEA in February, down in San Antonio, they bring students from the orchestra, the band and the choir altogether to come and sing and sort of open up that amazing week.
And we discovered after the fact that we were both there singing, I think the national Anthem and God Bless America or a few other things.
- On the same stage.
- On the same stage.
- He pretends like he saw me, but there's no way.
- I remember you.
I saw you there, you were so beautiful.
- Anyway, so we love getting to perform together.
And so we're gonna play you a few more of our favorite songs.
In fact, this one was written by...
I was brought up by a dad who loves folk music.
And one of the most prolific composers of popular folk music is Bob Dylan.
This was actually written by Bob Dylan, but made famous by tons of people.
And most recently probably performed by Adele.

We have a daughter Piper who is 11, a daughter Keller who's nine, and a little one, Harper, is six.
So what is it like to be a girl dad?
Hashtag it's complicated.
- It's complicated being a girl dad.
It's awesome.
So far it has been an absolute dream to have these three little girls.
They're funny, they're precocious, they love to rough house and wrestle and be fun.
And it's really exciting and just very humbling to have these girls who just see me come home from work and their eyes just fill up, and they won't let me leave without a hug and a kiss.
I think I'm gonna be in good hands if I ever have to be very old and by myself, these girls are gonna definitely take care of me.
- Absolutely.
- I think the best thing though is that I'm just relieved that when I train my kids on how to be an appropriate and functional adult, I can point them to you.
Like I don't have to be that model.
To a young boy of how to be a proper man, I can just say, "Ladies, be like your mom and everything will work out for you."
So it's great for me.
- Well, that's awfully sweet.
When you have two girls and you have a third baby, everybody's like, "You're trying for the boy, you're trying for your boy."
So we had a gender reveal party for our youngest daughter and everybody thought, "Hopefully, this is gonna be their boy."
But what they probably knew if they knew as well is we actually were really hoping for a girl because we always wanted to have a trio of tight harmony singing sisters.
And so when we cut the little gender reveal cake and it was pink, we were like, "Yes, we got our band."
- We got the band, and they sound great.
- [Emily] And they're amazing.
- They're amazing.
They're they're living up to- - Thankfully, none of them ended up being tone deaf.
So it's pretty much living up to the hype, I would say.
- Well, this is a great tune, of course, for me to sing because it reminds me of those lovely ladies.

This is a song for my daughter to her dad who was not a good dad.
And so the disclaimer is that this song has nothing to do with either of our lives, but it's a beautifully written song.
And when I do it, people always come up to me and say, "Oh, I really felt that, really resonated with me."
So that's one reason I'm gonna do it.

- Oh, you did?
- [Eric] Yeah.
- Man, we wrote a bunch of good songs.
- Yeah, it's nice to be doing all the originals.
- It is, yeah, uh-huh.
So we can't really share our story without talking just a little bit about one of the most pivotal experiences I think in our lives where six years ago, Eric went from presenting like a clinician at work in the morning to 12 hours later being on a ventilator in septic shock with pneumonia.
And it was just a very frightening, very fast progression throughout the day.
We had a three month old and a three-year-old and a five-year-old.
And I remember getting to the hospital.
I had left the hospital a few hours before with them saying, "He's fine, he has pneumonia, but it's not bad.
He'll be home soon."
And they just kind of said, "It's not a big deal.
You can go home, take the baby home."
And to getting a call in the middle of the night that he had been put on a ventilator and was not doing well.
And when I got there, the nurse insinuated that he was probably gonna die.
And so I just remember sitting there and looking at you on a ventilator, and you didn't even look like yourself.
And I remember my pastor's wife got there, it's three o'clock in the morning.
And she came in and the first thing I said to her was, "How am I gonna tell my kids that their dad is dead?"
And I just remember her looking at me and saying, "No, God does not give grace for what if.
And if God called you to walk through Eric dying, he would give you grace for it.
But right now, he may not look good, but he's still alive."
(Eric chuckling) - I still don't look good.
- You look a lot better than you did.
And she said, "He's still alive and you can't... God hasn't given you grace for things you're not walking through."
And it was just like a huge... That's kind of become my life motto.
- Wow.
- 'Cause it's so easy to live in, "What if?".
I feel like with our economy, with COVID-19, with so many things that we've been going through, it's so hard to not get caught up in what if all the time.
And so it was just a huge experience of learning to just rest in the moment and receive the grace that I had for the moment.
And just prayed and sang over you.
I mean, I'm sure I sang over you constantly and I don't know what your nurses thought about that, but I sang all the time and played music all the time for the next eight days until you were extubated.
And you spent almost two weeks in the hospital and then came out of it.
And then shortly after, like a month after, you played trumpet with the Touring Broadway Show of Chicago which was my favorite musical.
- Yeah, mine too.
- And so he was on stage playing all those cool jazzy trumpet and it was pretty amazing.
So that's just kind of something I think that definitely has...
I mean, how has that impacted you?
- It's probably hard to understand the full impact that that's had.
I mean, it's very unusual to just wake up in a hospital bed.
I wasn't really shocked or surprised that I was there.
Somehow, it just kind of made sense.
But being awake and you have this tube and you can't talk, I couldn't talk to you, I couldn't talk to our girls.
Everything had to just sort of be spelled out with my finger on a piece of paper with the letters written on it.
And so it was a very humbling experience.
But you talked about the grace for what if, for me just hearing that same message, there's a verse that says my grace is sufficient for you.
And so just realizing that whether I have perfect health or all the money in the world, none of that is as important as having the grace of God on my life.
And so that for me has lingered throughout these years.
But thankfully, no residual issues and my breathing is fine and everything seems to be okay.
- And if you ever miss a note, you can be like, "Oh man, I think that's residual pneumonia."
- Yeah, I think that's it.
Yeah, that gives me an- - It's always good to have like a backup excuse.
- Oh sorry, I was saying flat.
I had sepsis that one time, remember?
That's probably what it is.
- There was another song that was on the radio that you're gonna sing next.
It was on the radio during that time.
And I remember getting in the car, leaving the hospital, and this song came on and I just bawled like a baby.
Thanks a lot, Ed Sheeran.
So if you'd seen this one, this one definitely...
The next two songs definitely speak to me about kind of that time that we went through as well.
- Yeah.

So thank you everybody who's involved with that.
- Yes, thank you so much to The Arts Council of Midland.
