I'm your host, Colin O'Brady.
This season, we're venturing south to the pristine peninsula of Baja, Mexico.

My dad's alcoholism really hurt me.
And my siblings were so young that I don't think they understood how bad it really was.
Although my dad may have overcome his addiction, our relationship is still in recovery.
Hopefully, Survivalists will show me that my dad is serious and that I can fully trust him.
Colin: And the Robbins Family from Farmington, Utah.
Amber: My name is Amber Robbins.
When our children were younger, we used to spend a lot of time building resilience as a family and doing fun activities.
Unfortunately, we are not as tight-knit as we once were.
Survivalists can help rebuild that resilience and strong bond that we used to have.
We are hoping we can become Team Robbins again, bigger and better and stronger.

Colin: You mentioned being sober and I know that's a big part of your journey.
Talk to me a little bit about that process and kinda where you're at in it now.

In my addiction, I was selfish and I caused a lot of problems.
I mean, I tear up a little bit because in the past, I wasn't the one they came to with problems.
And so, now the fact that I can be here with these guys and let them know that I'll always be here means the world to me.
I wouldn't want to do this with anybody else.

So, we would fight a lot.
The drinking made him sad.
He just wasn't the same person.
He was grumpier, he'd sleep all the time.
I feel like I couldn't trust my dad during that time.
It really did pull us apart from each other.
I just would like to make new memories to replace all those ones that, you know, I'd like to forget.
And I definitely think that Survivalists will help me lean on my dad more and help me to gain that trust.

Robbins Family, how are you guys?
Robbins Family: Good!
- Really good!
Colin: Amber, I know that you guys have gone through a lot of changes recently.
Talk to me about that and kind of where you guys are at.

I trained 'em to run and I coached 'em to swim and we did triathlons.
And we did stuff like this all the time.
We stopped doing a lot of the things that we had once done.
And so my kids didn't have quite the-the connection that we used to have.
I'm really looking forward to having the stepping stone to move forward into what we used to be and what we can be again as a team.
We are here on Survivalists to regroup and focus on our family moving forward.
Emma: We used to do a lot of hikes and kind of activities together.
Just hoping that this can be an opportunity that we can rekindle that.
Colin: Finn, to be a father, to be a husband through all of this, talk to me a little bit about your experience.
Finn: It kind of felt like we went from thriving to just basically working on survival.

These families will travel over 20 miles.
The first two days will be in the Sierra la Laguna Mountain Range, twisting through treacherous trails and rocky river canyons, all in temperatures near 100 degrees.

Casey: You want to vote about it?
Do you want to just go?
Preslee: Yeah, let's just go up.
Casey: 'Kay, let's get up top and decide.
Preslee: So, I wrote this letter to my dad two years ago.
For as long as I can remember, my dad has been an alcoholic.
I feel like I had to step up as a mom.
Everyday, me and my dad would fight.
Fighting with a drunk is the most annoying thing.
Our relationship was so horrible during that time, and then one day it happened.
My dad drove drunk and hit someone.
That night, my dad decided he needed to change.
They called a rehabilitation center and then bright and early the next morning, he checked in.
Then for the next month and a half, my dad was in rehab.
Once my dad got home, it was not smooth sailing from there.
One day, we were all sitting in the living room for a family meeting.
My dad said, "I've been through a lot and we will be okay."
This made me angry cause I-and I responded with, "Really Dad?
You think you're the only one who had a hard time throughout this?"
This made him really think and this really opened his eyes to what we all dealt with.
Today, me and my dad are working on our relationship and I cannot wait to make new memories to remember with him.
Casey: Sometimes you take the road less traveled and you get there better.
It's kind of like what we've done our whole life.
[bird screeches] Colin: The Scott's long-fought journey has led them down a trying road.
And while Preslee hopes the current path will lead them to something better, they still have a challenging uphill battle ahead.
They now trail the Robbins by eight minutes.
Amber: I'm a little offset by this pack, it's a little bit different weighted than I'm used to.
[heavy breathing] This tent's killing me.
We have two tents.
My husband has one and I have one.
And my back started getting a little sore.
Hey guys, let's slow down just a little bit.
The tent's killing me.
Finn: Hey Emma.
Emma: What?
Finn: Wanna switch tents?
Put a tent on your pack.
[heavy breathing] Emma: No I got it, just put it on.
Amber: Just mine's a little heavier.
Emma: My mom's struggling and so I go and grab the tent.
Finn: Colin didn't pack the lightweight tents.
Finn: [chuckle] Emma: I think when I watch my mom go through a lot, I want to help her out and kinda shoulder some of the weight and pain she's going through.
Amber: That tent is a big difference.
It's been eye-opening to see that Emma really does step up.
I think I need to give her a little bit more credit than I have.
Colin: While Emma's actions relieve her mom of undue strain, the stop-down has cost the Robbins time, and their lead is cut to a quarter mile.
But the Scotts have arrived to a steep, dry ascent, the most difficult section they've faced so far.
Boden: I wish I was like Logan and had a small backpack.
Preslee: I wish I was like Mom and at home.
Casey: This is no harder than Adams Canyon.
Frankie: Uh, except you have 30 pounds on your back.
Casey: You guys wanna take a break?
Boden: Yeah.
Casey: 'Kay.
Sit for a second.
Alright, thoughts real quick.
Boden, what's your thoughts?
Boden: I think I was more excited than I should've been.
Casey: [laughter] Preslee, thoughts.
Preslee: I don't know.
My dad just likes to make light of everything.
But we're going to be put in such difficult situations that we'll have to turn it off and be serious to be able to get through 'em.
[sniff] Casey: Are you going forward?
Preslee: Yeah.
Casey: Hold on.
Colin: Casey's attempt to fulfill the fatherly duties he spent years squandering comes at a price, as they now trail the Robbins by nine minutes, heading into the final mile of today's grueling trek.
Emma: How you guys feeling?
Logan: Um, hot, tired.
Amber: [chuckle] A lot of us are getting really tired and I know when I get tired I don't wanna really communicate.
Logan: Let's stop when we get some shade.
Emma: At this point of the hike, we're more survival.
But I think if we change, kind of, how we communicate and bring some more fun into it we'll kind of be more into our thrive mode.
Amber: We got it!
Emma: Oh I can see it!
Finn: Day one, finishing strong!
Robbins Family: [cheering] Finn: Open it up, see what it says.
Amber: Alright, read it.
Ashley: It says, "Congratulations Robbins Family, "you made it through your first day "on the trail.
"Before you set up camp and relax, "I have one more challenge for you.
"Being able to start a fire "is one of the most critical survival skills."
Finn: Oh boy.
Ashley: "Good luck."
Robbins Family: [cheering and clapping] Emma: Alright, you guys ready?
Colin: With one more obstacle to overcome before the day's end, the Robbins prepare for the challenge ahead.
Meanwhile, less than a half a mile behind, the Scotts are still trying to make their way to the flag.
Casey: Pick up the pace!
Frankie: I'm going as fast as I can.
Casey: Preslee, come on.
Preslee: What?
Casey: Pick up the pace!
You're causing a backup.
Preslee: Then you can go in front of me.
My relationship with my dad wasn't very good.
When he would spiral down and start drinking, we all were struggling during that time and it wasn't just him.
Boden: There's something blue up ahead.
Scott Family: [cheering] Casey: Get the letter, buddy!
Boden: "Congratulations Scott Family.
"You made it through your first day on the trail."
Casey: [whoops] Colin: The Scotts finished today's punishing hike 18 minutes behind the Robbins family.
But all that could change with the fire challenge.
Emma and Preslee will have five minutes to use only flint, steel, and the provided materials to build a fire big enough to burn through the rope and release the rock.
If they succeed, their families will get to leave 30 minutes early tomorrow morning.

Boden: It's amazing just to be out there.
Casey: He did everything, jumped off the cliff, trudged through the sand.
I mean, he is the MVP.
He is a warrior.
Colin: Preslee, your plea when you came out here was to create new memories, let the past behind and move forward in a positive way.
Do you feel like your dad has shown you that he's really committed to makin' changes in the long- run?
Preslee: Definitely, I think like we're all gonna remember this for a long time and it's a good start and I'm excited to see where it goes.
My relationship with my dad is definitely strengthened after this whole Survivalists journey.
He has stepped up as that role as a father and he takes care of us all and I feel like I can trust him to do everything, and I'm really proud of him for that.
I'm grateful that we were able to do it.
Thanks, Dad.
Casey: You're an amazing young lady and I'm glad that we had this time to spend.
Preslee: I love ya.
Colin: Congratulations, you guys.
Welcome to the new chapter of this family.
Victorious at Survivalists, well done!
Scott Family: [cheering] ♪♪ Colin: Team Robbins, you're almost there!
Finish it all the way up!
Amber: It was a little bit hard that we didn't win because we had worked so hard.
And to realize that it was because of some of our shortcomings and some of these challenges was a hard pill to swallow.
We would have loved to have won Survivalists, but we won Survivalists in a different way.
Scott Family: [cheering] Amber: And we're just excited to be at the point where we can just link arms and move forward in life and just have fun again.
Colin: Team Robbins, you officially have finished Survivalists!
All: [clapping] Congratulations!
Preslee and Frankie: [clapping] Colin: That was an incredible job.
Emma, what specific lessons of being out here, unplugged, as a family, arm-in-arm, can you take back with you to this new chapter of your life where you're thriving?
Emma: I just think kinda like, just going back to like the core of our family and just like kinda lookin' outside of just like, technology and other distractions in life and kinda just always know that your family is there for you.
We all kinda have our ups and downs and challenges come our way that we didn't exactly ask for, but having those connections and doing this as a family, together, was just kind of like a revelation moment for all of us.
We're just kinda thriving together.
I think we've made some really good connections out here and so I hope we continue to do that throughout our whole life.
Amber: Survivalists has definitely helped us regain that courage.
Having the opportunity to be in the outdoors with my family has really given us the opportunity to put the past to bed and be able to just kind of wake up refreshed and renewed and ready to meet the new day as a family.
Emma: Ready?
Robbins on three.
One, two, three.
Robbins Family: Robbins!
Colin: Yeah!
Good job you guys!
Congratulations!
Casey: Get in here, you big lug!
Colin: [laughter] Who's ready for fish tacos?
- Oh!
- Heck yeah!
