Michael, good to see you.
Glenn, great to see you!
Like, to actually see you in person, and i In person?
I should say that about you.
We just hear you all the time on the radio.
This is true.
Good to see you.
So after a storied career in some Gainesville stalwarts like Subrosa and Bears and Lions, tell us how you brought this project out of the darkness.
Oh, wow... Well, um, it was um, many days and many nights in a very deep, dark place in a cave.
And I, um, brought them out of the cave... Out of the darkness.
It sounds like a Bears and Lions story.
It should be, shouldn’t it?
No cheating.
Yeah, I found the songs just all - they were just laying around all over the place.
I mean, were these, like, uh, songs - How long have you been writing these songs Um, yeah... Ever since, um, I just wanted to get away from Andy and Bears and Lions.
And yet you called him over to sit next to you.
Yeah, I know, I know... Who, me?
No, but seriously, how long have you had - I mean, are these songs that were, you know, could have been Bears and Lions songs or you just, uh, started them after Bears and Lions?
I mean, I think I did bring a couple to Andy, and we were both like, no, these are too dark and like, you know, felt too raw.
The kids wouldn't - it wouldn't be good for the kids.
Um... and it was a time of where I was, um, you know, kind of discovering some new musical - exploring some new musical things, some new personal things.
I, um... Just - yeah.
You kinda had to take off the costume, felt like we were living behind the costume in a lot of ways.
And... I was afraid, kind of, to take it off and, you know, it was a superhero outfit of sorts.
You could do anything, you know, in that.
But at the same time, to be vulnerable had to take it off.
So here we are.
Unmasked.
Or, I am....And, um, yeah.
And so this is a whole new project birthed from that.
Out of fear, Out of the Darkness.
Gotcha.
You, um, created a really neat world to - to - to live in, like, aurally, um... I really enjoy it.
I mean, I - I'm a big, uh, Beatles nerd, so it's very Beatlesesque in many ways, but I mean, baroque pop, um, I think, uh, I need to find because I can't recreate this from memory.
A mix of folk piano mash, sloppy country, uh, which is why you brought Mark Archer in.
Hey...Zing.
Okay, give me more sloppy Mud rock, dirty Beach Boy.
Eclectic rock.
Um, it's really, uh, so many different influences, but... you've created this, like, palette.
Uh, that's really enjoyable to listen to.
Yeah.
Thank you.
It was really hard to actually come up with, What does it sound like?
When people ask me that - especially people who’ve known me for a long time or have, known Bears and Lions.
So, um, yeah, it was - there were no boundaries with it.
There were no rules.
There was - and I think that's what - what made it so cathartic was that, um, it just whatever came to me, um, was going to go on the album.
You've got some, uh, you know, many of the folks here, uh, performed on the album, but you performed a lot of it yourself, recorded a lot of it, as well as writing.
Uh, and Andy... You brought Andy along.
So, Andy, you got nothing - nothing going on?
No, I don't, yeah, I get paid a lot of money to do this.
That's not true at all.
No, but - and you, you co-wrote, uh, one of the songs on the album... Maybe.
Maybe.
Yeah.
But, you know, to be humble here.
And Mike's being very humble about all of this, I think, um, you know, I think as artists, everybody has these ideas in their head and these songs that they craft on their own independently.
And I think all of us that are sitting around here encouraged him to go off and do this independently and get that out of them, um, because it was pretty amazing.
You know, sometimes playing a supporting role in a - in a feature film like this is pretty, pretty awesome.
You know, in - in some of the songs.
I mean, it sounds like an adult Bears and Lions.
I mean, some of these songs - this one could very well have been a - a Bears and Lions kind of song.
I mean, because it's, it's very positive.
It's got, you know, uh, positive message and all that sort of thing.
Yeah.
I was thinking about my kids, actually in this one.
My - Zander and Ava, my son and daughter.
And, um, if I - was really bad giving them advice, you know, like, thinking what fatherly advice can I give them growing up?
I always felt like, God, you just failed again at that.
So this was kind of that for them.
All right, well, let's hear one more from Out of the Darkness.
