Boundary Stones
The Fight to Stop a Monument to Slavery in Washington, D.C.
2/27/2026 | 1m 28s
Did you know African Americans stopped a monument to slavery from being built in Washington, D.C.?
In the early 1900s, the United Daughters of the Confederacy pushed for a “Mammy” monument to be built in D.C., supposedly to honor so-called “faithful slaves” of the South. But Black activists, journalists, and community leaders immediately recognized it as a racist caricature designed to sanitize the history of slavery and reinforce subservience. So, they fought back — vehemently.
