A new study by the University of Washington says human services workers are underpaid by 37%.
Seattle homeless outreach, childcare, and elder care workers are leaving for higher paying careers in the for-profit sector, and industry leaders say this is creating a workforce crisis.
Researchers analyzed wages in such services, comparing them to pay for similar jobs outside the sector.
They found that nonprofit human services workers in Washington earn 37% less than similar workers in for-profit non-care industries.
That wage gap has gender and racial equity implications.
Women account for 79% of all human service workers in King County.
The study also notes, quote, "Workers of color are overrepresented "in the lowest paid human services jobs, "including frontline care work."
