In Washington State, physician demographics don't reflect the communities they serve.
That can lead to worse outcomes for patients of color.
- [Edwin] For marginalized communities, the trust and relationship between a patient provider of racial concordance means that there's a likelihood that there will be better outcomes.
- [Starla] Racial concordance refers to when a patient and provider share a racial identity.
Many patients prefer to see someone who shares their background, understands their culture, or speaks their language.
All these things contribute to a trusting relationship.
- [Jessica] Are there other concerns that you wanted to talk about?
I have a patient who lives on Vashon Island.
Her daughter specifically brings her mother all the way from the island.
Certainly, there are other medical clinics on Vashon Island, none that are specifically focused on the Asian-American population.
