At the one-year anniversary of the first bans on gatherings due to the pandemic, "Crosscut" surveyed 125 arts organizations in the Greater Seattle area.
Most of them remain closed.
A universal problem is cash flow.
Almost 3/4 of the respondents said they don't have enough cash on hand to cover operating expenses for the year, and over 1/4 say their cash will run out in the next three months.
Job losses have been historic.
Music venues have felt the worst of the revenue drop-off.
Most arts organizations responded by going digital, taking traditional programming to live or streaming online events.
Many have found new audiences online and some new revenue sources.
Though a painful year, some artists see the pandemic forcing a transformational change.
Many arts groups are cautiously optimistic about the future, but almost all agree that going back to normal is not possible nor desirable.
