The invasion of Ukraine is expected to sever decades of Washington's business ties with Russia.
The State's iconic apple industry offers a stark example of how this can play out.
Until a few years ago, Russian consumers paid a premium for large Washington state apples, and we exported upwards of 12.7 million dollars of apples to Russia in 2013.
In 2014, the number of Washington apples shipped to Russia declined.
That year, Russia invaded an annexed Crimea from Ukraine.
The U.S. responded with targeted sanctions, namely on assets owned by Putin's inner circle.
But Russia struck back with much more widespread sanctions, including a ban on many U.S. agricultural products, such as the large Washington apples their citizens had enjoyed.
From 2015 on, not a single Washington apple has been sold inside Russia's borders.
