(intriguing music) A ban on private for-profit prisons in Washington state could severely limit US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, from housing adult detainees in the Pacific Northwest.
The State House passed a bill that will ban private prisons from operating anywhere in Washington state.
The bill now goes to the Senate where it is expected to win passage.
(intriguing music) At the same time, a Cowliz County court ended a contract with ICE for a facility that houses troubled teens.
If the bill becomes law, the state's biggest for-profit private prison, Tocama's Northwest ICE Processing Center would continue to operate, but only until the end of its contract with ICE in 2025.
The prison is owned and operated by the private GEO Group.
In using that facility, ICE has flown thousands of detainees in and out of Washington state over the years.
