On March 9th, 2020, the Washington State Senate voted to outlaw single use plastic bags.
Two days later, the World Health Organization classified the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic.
The state-wide plastic bag ban, along with in-person gatherings, became an early victim of the pandemic.
The law that was supposed to take effect January 1st, 2021 isn't dead, supporters say, but recommendations from the governor's office delayed implementation.
Enforcement of it has been indefinitely postponed.
Grocery industry sources say most customers in Washington brought reusable bags before coronavirus, but at the onset of the pandemic, grocery stores questioned their safety.
Some, including Kroger-owned stores in Seattle, banned them altogether.
However, recent CDC research has eased concerns about COVID-19 transmission by cloth bags.
Governor Inslee will revisit the plastic bag ban on July 1st.
