I as a man have changed dramatically since that time.
When I signed at Island Def Jam I thought I had arrived.
I thought that I was, that I was on the gravy train that was gonna run forever.
And I didn't have my eye on the ball very much.
Just as a man I've matured substantially since I was 20 years old, and what that has translated to is a dramatic difference I think in the approach that I have to writing songs, the intent with which I step out onto the stage or the intent with which I open my mouth and deliver a lyric.

One of the most important messages to young artists is, don't ever consider records as a source of revenue for you.
Don't count on it.
If you don't count on it, then when it does come, it's lagniappe right, it's extra, it's extra bread, and you can feed into a retirement account.
Build your business on live entertainment.
It's a job that people like myself have had for millennia, right?
If it was 3000 years ago and I had a nice, sweet little voice, they'd invite me to come over, whoever just had a nice kill, they'd say, "Hey, you come over.
We've got this kill.
"Or come sing for us, you know?"
